An extract from an email from my sister, the Bug:
I'm making an Adipose of clay in Art!!! ^.^ it is sooo cute!!!!!! i just need to give it arms then i can glaze it white and it'll be finished.
HAHAHAHAHA. OH MAN. My family are such irrepressible geeks. My sister is already writing fanfic and original fantasy, and I was only a year older than her when I first got into LJ and fandom...I wonder if I should start nudging her gently towards things.

sleep inertia
29 Jul 2008 09:14 pmBest irony yet: being lectured about the adverse effects on health & cognition of sleep deprivation. Including the words caffeine should be used pharmacologically and not socially.
WE'RE MEDICAL STUDENTS. WE KNOW THAT ALREADY. And I must say I had a very enjoyable cup of pharmacologically applied caffeine this morning, along with a blueberry ricotta cake.
Anyway, apart from joining the rest of my cohort in trying not to make eye contact while we're being told about how much we should be sleeping (haha. haaaaaaa.) today I've been bossing my major Med Revue item into shape. I think my habitual need to write the violence out of my system has been partially silenced for the moment by a) writing two Doctor/Master fics in close succession, and b) exerting my authority via the medium of choreography and dance training.
And trying not to think about how close the next RFA is.
Oh, and reading this fic. ( Proper flailing rec under the cut )

20 Jul 2008 06:42 pmuncertainty principles -- Doctor Who -- Doctor/Master, 4592 words
Every time he doesn't leave, every time he makes a choice, he feels the universe splintering under his hands.
In which I discover that a) the Master is becoming disturbingly easy to write and apparently likes to be written to Australian hip-hop, b) physics is more fun when you're making up half of it, and c) I appear to have a wild kink for people writing on each other's skin. I think this is the third fic in which it's been a prominent feature.
~
ALRIGHT, BRAIN. NOW THAT WE'VE FINISHED THAT ONE, YOU'RE GOING TO SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET ME DO SOME REAL WORK, OKAY?
This is kind of important.

three things
7 Jul 2008 01:23 pm1) World Youth Day is upon us. How do I know this? I know this because Womens College has been INVADED BY NUNS. I came down to breakfast and there were something like 50 American nuns lining up for juice and toast, and for a moment I thought I might have been hallucinating. But no! Nuns. Very...nun-looking nuns. With different coloured wimples and things to show what sisterhood they're from. Fascinating! Especially since I had the Bare soundtrack stuck in my head and was wandering around the dining hall mumbling there's a bender among us, there's pink in our flock and other completely inappropriate things.
2) I am rather surprised at the strength of my hatred for Katy Perry's song 'I Kissed A Girl'. I just. Wow. I know it's supposed to be a fun song and the lyrics are more about exploring personal preference than any kind of homophobia, but something about the combination of the SEX SEX BLATANT SEX THAT'S RIGHT FOLKS WE BISEXUALS ARE HERE SOLELY FOR YOUR PERSONAL TITILLATION of the music video and the deliberate coyness -- it's not what good girls do -- just really, really rub me the wrong way. I'll be over here with Jill Sobule's song of the same name, thanks.
3) Aria is disgustingly speedy and talented and has ALREADY written an amazing alt!Doctor/Rose fic that covers pretty much all of my important opinions about that pairing, which means that now I don't have to write one. WHOO. East of the Sun & West of the Moon -- Doctor Who -- This is the closest they'll ever come to the sky again, and the closest they'll ever come to each other, and he's sorry they know it.

Doctor Who rec

You may recall a while ago I wrote a short & strange Doctor/Master fic called Mendelian Inheritance -- well,
ariastar, light of my life and bane of my soul, etc. etc., has taken the basic idea of Gallifreyan semantics being about close juxtaposition of concept and has flown with it to create something amazing.
fear of the dark -- Doctor/Master
A certain linguistic tense, now lost, describes things that used to always be, and now never are. Travel between dimensions. Paradoxes fixable without the unnecessary fuss of screaming and death and reality rending. A certain sort of databank immortality, thousands of souls with a unique print of Time Lord DNA ready to be called back to breathing life in a new body at the least thought.
READ & ADORE.

In other news: two-sentence fic prompts still being accepted, if you're interested.

[Iron Man drabbles]
30 May 2008 09:20 amWell, you know. 'Drabbles'. I've still got a couple of drabbles to complete but all of the Iron Man ones are finished, so I'm putting them in their own little post, all the better to bookmark with my brand spanking new del.icio.us tag for this movie, with which I am becoming a little bit obsessed in the fannish sense. That was a long sentence. Anyway. Onwards!
( Uncle Iroh as Tony Stark's substitute assistant when Pepper goes on vacation. )

( Rhodey and Jarvis )

17 Nov 2007 10:40 pmCaught up on SPN today. I suppose I have some things to say but I am apparently godawful at meta (even more so than usual!) when it comes to this show, so I'll content myself with wondering where the hell all the Dean/Bela porn is, because hot dang.
But
setissma is having a Baby, it's cold outside drabblefest over at her journal and the current contributions, including my little ficlet in which I cruelly deface a perfectly harmless Russian folk tale, are looking QUITE LONELY, so anyone SPN-inclined should head over there and leave scribbles/icons/randomness of their own.
Now: fic recs! You should realise that I read very little fanfiction; I don't follow any communities, so everything I read is either written or recced by my friends. ( Which suits me fine, because I have some awesomely talented friends. )
Blah blah fandomness. Still totally obsessed with Bones, still drowning happily in OTP, still prepared to tear down mountains with my TEETH if it will get me some good Booth/Brennan fic so that I don't end up writing ridiculously romantic cohabitation fic of my own, because IT WILL HAPPEN, YOU GUYS, and then my carefully-constructed reputation as a writer of shining and ruthless cynicism will be destroyed forever.

amberite: Catherine Tate and David Tennant attack the fourth wall with great aplomb. HAHAHA. This is awesome.
I think I am going to spend my evening writing, drinking sangiovese and listening to the Bare: A Pop Opera soundtrack, which is...yeah, okay,
crazylittleme, it's totally RENT meets Dead Poets Society.

9 Sep 2007 09:46 amI feel it is testament to how holidays make my best laid plans just fall by the wayside that I spent a large portion of last night writing Ouran fic. It's not bad Ouran fic, and I'm having a lot of fun, but one day it would be nice to actually get a handle on my attention span.
*sighs*
Watching 'Utopia' on TV with my siblings = hilarious, especially when my parents come into the kitchen at the very end of the episode.
Dad: Is that DEREK JACOBI?
Me: Shhhh!
Lauren: What did he mean 'depends which one'? Oh! Is he an EVIL Time Lord?
Me: JUST. WATCH.
Dad: Wait, they're bringing back the MASTER?
Lauren: Who?
Me: Um --
Mum: SHUSH, DON'T SPOIL THE ENDING, I WANT TO WATCH THE TAPE LATER.
Me: Um, guys, I haven't heard a single word of the dialogue since --
Lauren: Is he stealing the TARDIS? HE IS. NOOOO.
Rob: Hey, it's the guy from Life on Mars!
Me: I hate you all.

Author names have been revealed for Multiverse 2007, so here's the fic that I wrote in a mad rush after rashly volunteering to pinch-hit. I don't know why I find McKay so much harder to write than Sheppard, but it was like pulling bloody teeth.
The Holes in the Ground - Doctor Who/Stargate: Atlantis - Rodney McKay & the Doctor, 5156 words
"Right," and thank God, he actually shuts up and just balances the circuitboard on one knee and points his stupid sonic screwdriver at it and presses a button. Blue light buzzes out from the tip and three seconds later there's a shuddering roar from the generators and the shield soars upwards. It's the most ridiculously unscientific thing Rodney has ever seen. He kind of wants to cry.

24 Aug 2007 11:16 amDear Ms [Fahye]
On behalf of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sydney, I am delighted to invite you to attend an interview as part of the selection process for entry to the University of Sydney Medical Program commencing in February 2008.

A post to
asclepiad will probably be appearing within the next day or so.
Also: Doctor Who S4 publicity pic. OMG. I am getting immensely excited just looking at it.
svilleficrecs has a point about the complete and utter hotness of Ten(nant)'s hair, and the rather suss expressions on their faces: they look like they just got an innocent flapper slightly drunk and then had lots of sex with her in the TARDIS, in the manner of Les Liasons Dangereuses.
Someone should write that. And by someone I of course mean Aria.
Also also: HAPPY BIRTHDAY O CLAIRZA MY CLAIRZA.

9 Jul 2007 08:30 pmThe fact that I was mildly sloshed on G&T during the writing of large portions of this is hypocritical on so many levels.
Anyway.
no sleepers must sleep - Doctor Who - Lucy/Saxon, 3513 words.
Valour is an old word, belonging more to the suits of armour that line the corridors of her parents' house than to Lucy's life of rhythmic prose and polished soundbites and new, dangerous secrets.

Proper Fandomly Update (kind of)
5 Jul 2007 06:50 pm*cracks knuckles*
- First of all I want to throw huge amounts of love in the direction of
liminalliz, twin of my heart, who made this excellent post on the nature of captivity as a plot device, or Why Kara/Leoben And Hannibal/Clarice Are Awesome But Certain Parts Of The Doctor Who Finale Are Not. I agree with every word she says. Read. Lizzen ALSO sent me an enormous parcel full of wonderful things including a beanie Texan cow and a gorgeous notebook and BOOKS. SO MANY BOOKS. BOOKS ABOUT YELLOW FEVER AND THE BLACK DEATH AND MEDIEVAL WHODUNNITS AND EEEEBOOKS.
- Having reconsidered and actually kind of made the suicidal skip=200 trek through my flist, I have a lot of things tagged as 'to read', so I'll be doing that tonight. Be not alarmed if comments come at you from the blue!
- My
ds_shakespeare fic missed deadline, sigh, but thankfully it's a very loose-and-friendly kind of comm and I will attempt to kick the thing into shape this weekend. My problem is that it's not really a fic so much as a series of conversations that take place within the same timeframe, and I can't even cheat and eschew joining scenes like I normally would because that immediately undermines the premise of at least half of them. DAMMIT.
- Re: those Doctor Who S4 casting spoilers, um, I am so hugely and enthusiastically in favour of this development that I am surprising even myself. YAY.
- All right, all right, I cave. Please rec me good (and I mean good - I don't read a whole lot of fic, and I am about as picky as you would imagine given my blatant literary elitism) fic in the fandoms of Heroes and Supernatural. Don't feel shy about pimping your own stuff: I keep you people on my flist for a reason, you know? Any pairing. My mind is very open at this stage.

quick-and-dirty fic
28 Jun 2007 10:46 pmI said I'd produce something!
Granted, this is not really what I was expecting to produce, but it's all
amberite's fault.
Mendelian Inheritance - Doctor Who - Doctor/Master, 1300 words.
In one sense they have always known that they would be the last heirs of their people, simply because they embody them: they swing between frantic chaos and frantic order like a pendulum set into motion with the flick of a finger.

I don't have anything more profound to say than OMG JOHN SIMM, really, although I will note that this episode managed to spark off a surprising number of fic ideas in my head.
(Well. This episode and
jezrana. Comedic yaks!!!)
HOWEVER, I have three more papers to mark and then I plan to spend the evening working on my
ds_shakespeare assignment, which was meant to be
brynnmck's birthday present. And maybe those one-sentence fics. And then maybe I will rewatch That Thing and start That Fic for
bantha_fodder's birthday. (Have I mentioned that I love holidays? I LOVE HOLIDAYS. I am going to write so much.)

I wish I had time to type up the many ways in which 'Blink' was fantastic (STEPHEN MOFFAT, I ADORE YOU) and the many ways in which 'Utopia' was, um, no I don't think I have enough superlatives. Oh my GOD.
ALL OF SEASON TWO IS FORGIVEN. THE CRAPITUDE THAT WAS THE EVOLUTION OF THE DALEKS IS FORGIVEN. I THINK THIS IS POSSIBLY MY FAVOURITE TEEVEE SHOW NOW? HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?
Oh yeah, they followed up a World War two-parter with a Moffat episode and then...
