new fic!

fahye: ([bsg] cylon crack)
So, approximately 24 hours ago a fic idea seized hold of me with tiny sharp demanding teeth, and refused to let go. I flailed at various people over AIM (all of whom were encouraging, and some of whom were actually prepared to talk narrative theory, symbolism and mythology with me - Aspen, Sweeney, Becca, Gen, Kelsey & Ji, you people are lovely) and sketched out an outline before bed.

And then today, I wrote it. I'm actually very glad that I got it done fast - it's the kind of thing that could have stretched out for ages, getting progressively more complex, and I can't afford that kind of drain on my headspace right now.

Eleusis (and by my God have I leaped over a wall)

BSG. Spoilers for 'Maelstrom'. Contains crazy amounts of meta, including veiled references to: Buffy, Hamlet, mathematics, Greek mythology, Buddhist mysticism, existentialism, sociological theory, the Bible, and no small amount of commentary on the show itself.

FUN.

And now to make coffee, and then go and do all of that homework that I was supposed to be doing this weekend.

Ooh.

Clicking around the fandom, I came across this theory, which...well, let's just say it involves the old series, and it's gotten me very curious.

SPOILERS for BSG 3x17, obviously, but it's well worth a look.

Okay, so it took me something like three hours to watch this episode because of breaks for dinner and frantic typing of reactions. It made it seem all epic and long.

Warning: I get very pretentious herein )

ETA: Some reactions to YOUR reaction posts, which I am reading now.

It appears that my two favourite shows are conspiring to make me flail myself to death.

Spoilers for 'Maelstrom' )

ETA: OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD. IT JUST GOT SEVEN MILLION TIMES BETTER.

Preview scene for the same episode. (Click 'Watch Clip'.)

I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time pimping the works of [livejournal.com profile] pirateygoodness, but she keeps writing things that are so crazy nobody else would even bother to humour the concept, let alone indulge it hilariously.

Ergo: If the Colonial Fleet Ever Finds Earth, They'd do Well to Take up Beet Farming

Four moments in Dwight and Angela's relationship that involved Battlestar Galactica.

Read and love.

In me-news, I am EVEN MORE SICK, wtf body, but have promised my mother I will clean the bathrooms, kitchen and family room today.

Pausing the SG:A season one finale to mention that I have isolated another of my fictional kinks that this show keeps whacking squarely on the head: absolute loyalty. Loyalty to a person even in the presence of what should be a higher authority. Defying orders because of unshakeable trust. Military sci-fi is great for this - BSG did it a lot at the beginning of S2, during the martial law scenario.

The upshot of this is, uh, I think people should write me lots of Sheppard-Weir right now. It's just like Apollo-Roslin! Except with the bonus feeling that any second they might start outmaking against walls!
fahye: ([bsg] laura roslin is smarter than you)
...

What the hell were you all complaining about? That was awesome.
fahye: ([bsg] starbuck - nuanced navigation)
Silver City-ers - I have exhaustively revised and fleshed out the plot outline, Sophie has exhaustively annotated it, and I'll try to have it posted later today. Be warned, it contains requests for input and assignments. Buckle up.

[livejournal.com profile] drewcypher has uploaded the promo pics for BSG 3x17 and OH MY GOD. They are driving me insane with how good this episode has the potential to be.

Pictures! And picture-specific babble. )
fahye: ([bsg] bringin' oppression back)
So [livejournal.com profile] stars_like_dust and I went a bit crazy during the past 24 hours (and didn't get a whole lot of sleep) and managed to write 14,330 words worth of fic. It's AU. It's aggressively piloty. We are ridiculously proud of it.

(For the record, Claira writes UNBELIEVABLY FAST. She would look up and be all "Finished!" and her scene would be enormous and I would have finished maybe three agonising paragraphs.)

She's gone out to dinner with an old housemate, and I am going to sit here and catch up on The Office, and you should all go and read our epic, Those Journeymen Divine.

“Leave it to me,” she says, grinning. “I have a plan.”

ETA: Much as I love feedback and comments, if you could leave it at the ficblog post rather than here (so that both Claira and I can see it), that'd be great :)
fahye: ([r+g] if that were north)
My friends list is a hilarious/awesome place sometimes. I should do this more often.

- [livejournal.com profile] mercuriazs has solved all of our fandom woes with the concept of wikicanon.

- [livejournal.com profile] stars_like_dust wrote a sequel to Stupid Thing Last Night in which she sort of remixes Benevolent Sibling and includes gratuitous Kat/Racetrack and it's hilarious and hot and full of pilots both old and new. YAY.

- [livejournal.com profile] marenfic wrote Kinesic, a deliciously bitter Dee-POV piece focusing on 'Unfinished Business'.

- [livejournal.com profile] blackboggart should be getting way more attention from HP fandom than she is, because I think her art is just gorgeous (she's on a Remus kick at the moment).

- [livejournal.com profile] emiloy did a Jack fanvid to Savin' Me, which, well, come on. It had to be done sooner or later, and although it could certainly have been done better, this chooses some interesting clips to include. (Okay, I especially like it because it uses 'Small Worlds' footage, and I loved that episode to tiny pieces.)

- I believe I first got this recipe from [livejournal.com profile] bantha_fodder, though I could be wrong...anyway, these are the best cookies in the world. (I use the word 'cookies' for soft, chewy things like the ones that Subway makes, and 'biscuits' for harder ones like gingernuts. That is just me. I embrace all Western food terms!) I am making a batch this afternoon )

Finally...thank you, everyone who commented on my last post, though I really was serious when I said I wanted to hear what you liked about you :) I won't be ungracious, however; I was in a low spot, and there's no remedy quite like feeling loved. Thanks.
fahye: ([other] best. episode. ever.)
If I have ever said or done anything to imply that BSG is not, in fact, my favourite television show in all the world, I TAKE IT BACK.

I TAKE IT ALL BACK.

CAPRICA! SAM! MYTHOLOGY! EPIC MILITARY STANDOFFS! PILOTS!

*delirious with joy*

EXHIBIT A. SPOILERY. )

1. “No sex forever, Apollo,” she says without raising her eyes, and his hand wavers near his pile of coins, under the amused gazes of the entire table, before he sighs and folds on a hand of full colours.

Yuletide is drastically incomplete and yet all I want to do is write fifty-sentences fic of pilots in an established relationship because the fandom has a sad lack of that and CLAIRZA IS A HO (yeah, remember that one?) and she is encouraging me in an extremely unhelpful manner.

I watched all of Arrested Development S3 yesterday and today, which meant many gleeful hours sitting on the couch stuffing my hand into my mouth to keep from shrieking with laughter. WHAT. As I told Ji: S1 was funny and random, S2 was hilarious and batshit insane, but S3 was like what might result if Shati, Emmy and Sweeney took a lot of illegal drugs and then sat down and threw ideas around and only kept the MOST RIDICULOUS ONES.

I want to watch all of The Office S2 again. Randomly.

I am yet to watch the latest ep of Torchwood, even though it is sitting there on my hard drive. Mostly because everyone's reactions to it, even the purely non-spoilery stuff that I've been exposed to, have been less than enthusiastic.
fahye: ([bsg] symphony of modern humanity)
Claira and I are made of awesome and have finished our fic of post-Unfinished Business pilot outmaking!

Now I have to work on Yuletide again. Dammit.

Gold To Iron, at my ficblog. Please leave any comments at THAT post, not this one. Ta :)

My three days off were lovely, but tomorrow I am working 10-7. Blah.

Also, everyone who hasn't yet watched BSG?

You should, because Joss Whedon wants you to. )
fahye: ([bsg] buddycops (back in the day))
THANK YOU, JANE ESPENSON. NICE TO KNOW SOMEONE ELSE MISSES SEASON ONE.

- Having wrestled Microsoft Access into submission (I could use it like a pro in Year 9, thanks to a dull term's work of database manipulation in IT), I now have a mostly-updated address list. If you have not commented to this post here and you would like to be on this list, PLEASE DO SO NOW.

- In other seasonal news, LJ is offering the Give More deal, which means that if you buy paid time as a gift for another user between now and the end of the year then they get the 100 userpics add-on FREE for the duration of the time that you purchased. THIS IS SUCH A COOL IDEA. It's also amusing that you can buy someone a lump of coal for their userinfo page, but I find the concept of those kinds of purchases to be a ghastly waste of money. If you want to buy someone pointless pixels, at least buy them THEIR CHOICE of pointless pixels, ie. icon space. (I suppose that $1 is not exactly exorbitant, but the miserly uni student in me still cries out in dismay at the very thought.)

- Working my way slowly through my to-do list. Currently sticking some files on DVD for my mother, who is even more obsessed with Doctor Who than I am (no, really, she recently rang me to spazz about how she was watching Jude solely for Christopher Eccleston and how she had discovered that David Tennant had a bit role in it too) and who I recently showed the Torchwood pilot. She wants more, and wants more now.

- I am on an enormous PILOTS high. It's great fun.

- This high has been in no way dimmed by [livejournal.com profile] ingrid_m's fantastic fic The Four Cornered Stone. It's post-'Unfinished Business' Lee/Dee, Dee/Gaeta and Lee/Kara and it's kind of excruciating if you are in any way fond of Lee, but at it's also very wicked, smart, and dark. Like that horrible 99% cocoa chocolate.

- Also along BSG lines: tomorrow's episode, 'The Passage', is the one written by Jane Espenson! Whoo! Battlestar Wiki informs me that it has lots of science (hurrah!) and that it is Kat-centric. If Ms. Espenson writes me Kat/Racetrack subtext of ANY KIND then I will die...pleased.

- If anyone can work out WTF is going on in this moodtheme picture of mine, I would be very interested to hear it.

YAY OPPRESSION. Also SO MUCH YAY for the mildly porny Colonial Day flashficathon happening somewhere around here, because Colonial Day will never stop rocking.

I now have three glorious, glorious days off work.

Mmmmm.

I think I will start packing my books for the Annual Moving Of All Fahye's Shit To Another Suburb, work on my Yuletide assignment, and research medical schools. And write Larklight fic, because it keeps bursting deliciously out of my mind.

In other OMG FUCKING AWESOME news, Peter Jackson has optioned the Temeraire books.
fahye: ([bsg] a night on mount olympus)
Having watched this episode once, I am now going to watch it again. This method of viewing allows me to actually scrape together some opinions that are a little more intelligent than 'abncsjhdshurgl pilots'.

Dot points. Nothing exhaustive. )
