This pimp post is going to be me waxing enthusiastic about one of my favourite shows in the world. Complete with capspam!

Life's dangerous. Come with me. )

Proudly presenting: The Certainty of Chance, the first issue of Lost Luggage, a Doctor Who ezine. I've only had time to flick (click?) quickly through the other stories, but they look really fantastic. My crazy fic stuffed full of medical metaphors has some very impressive company :)

Go! Read!

(Also, re: one-sentence fics - never let me get that enthusiastic when it comes to accepting prompts EVER AGAIN. My GOD. I mean, I'll get them done, but it will take...a while.)

*flees back to taking notes about anxiety disorders*
fahye: ([house] stretches of colour)
While everyone in the US seems to be starting jobs this week (gainful employment! well done, folken!), I am wondering how long I can delude myself into forgetting that my major exams are less than a week away. OH, STUVAC. Such a deceptive dichotomy of laziness and panic.

I'm off to make myself a meal that by this point I do not think I can reasonably call breakfast, and then attempt to organise a semester's worth of assignments and lecture notes and lab handouts into a form that I can start to study from.

In the meantime, have a meme that (thankfully) has no chance of exploding into long crazy drabbles:

Name a pairing that I am familiar with, in a fandom I am familiar with, and I will write one line for that pairing and fandom.

And speaking of one-sentence fics, [livejournal.com profile] rawles has gone on a sublime spree of capslock with one-sentence fics/personal canon/hilarious reasons why characters suck. Contains spoilers for Heroes, BSG, PotC:AWE, The Office and Avatar, and is a wonderful mess of glee shot through with snarky rage.
fahye: ([dw] two doctors > one!)
Oh my god. Personal dislike of macro-ese aside...

...[livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj WINS THE INTERNETS.

*has possibly hurt something laughing*
fahye: ([office] don't take no for an answer)
Awesome things seen on my flist recently

- Jamie Bamber & Tricia Helfer in a noir-themed photoshoot which is very, very difficult to stop staring at. Jamie really needs to smile more often. Tricia needs...uh...no, she's perfect. Damn her.

- Introducing [livejournal.com profile] copinggoggles to BSG = the best thing I ever did? (WANT. WAAAAANT.)

- Introducing [livejournal.com profile] agonistes to BSG = also a fantastic idea? (She wrote post-'Crossroads' Adama/Roslin and it's SO BITTERSWEET AND PERFECT.)

- This Office fic by [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch, in which Jim takes his trip to Australia, is lovely and sad and true and should be read by anyone who doesn't live in my country (as well as anyone who does. for the injokes!).

Also awesome

- Did you know that exercise bikes are MAGIC when it comes to abs? Seriously! I had no idea! I started doing 25 minutes of cycling every morning (in front of, usually, an NCIS episode) and I haven't lost weight or anything like that, but my stomach was agonisingly sore for two days and has now become FLAT LIKE BOARD. I am so impressed.

- Tim Tam Slams through hot chocolate. Possibly the best comfort food ever invented.

- Okay, this is pathetic beyond words, but somebody needs to hook me up with the Friends themesong RIGHT NOW because Ji sent me a couple of episodes for the sake of cultural exposure and...I got all fond of everyone and amused by how it's like Coupling except with less sex and more sanity and...I am now downloading S1. ONLY NINE SEASONS TO GO. FANFUCKINGTASTIC. But yeah, I need that song. Stat. (They're dancing in a fountain, you guys! A FOUNTAIN.)
fahye: ([bsg] mom & dad are having a chat)
TIRED. Tired beyond all previous definitions of the word, and I can't even claim it was for a good cause because once again I've spent my time trying to exorcise a fic from my head and neglecting my assignments. Tomorrow I will need to kick the ASS of this summary paper and lab report.

Insta-rec before I fall into bed: [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck's contribution to the Less Is More Day not!porn challenge, Three's A Crowd, due South, Vecchio/Fraser/Kowalski. There isn't so much as a kiss in it and it's still prety much the filthiest thing I've read in ages, because Brynn is just that good.

Also in honour of Less Is More, [livejournal.com profile] pearl_o hosted a picspam thread which should conclusively prove my case to any BSGers baffled by why I go on and on about Callum Keith Rennie sometimes. THE MAN IS SEX. Look, I'll show you.

Exhibit A )
fahye: ([other] this could not be more obnoxious)
- First off, I finally have the perfect excuse to use this icon (WHOO) because [livejournal.com profile] svilleficrecs has said some very sane things in defense of the BNF phenomenon. (Okay, so this is possibly the most ridiculous and obnoxious icon I have, but you guys get that I'm using it tongue-in-cheek, right? Right? Please god be as sensible as I think you are. It's not like BSG fandom gives a fuck about the Bitchy Elitist Cabal anymore.)

- [livejournal.com profile] musesfool is holding a love meme on her journal. Pen has put my name here as part of a cunning piece of emotional blackmail (that, sadly enough, worked like a charm) but you should all point out where you are, or where you have listed someone else I know, so that I can go and leave comments. (Upon reading it through, it is mostly SPN fandom-based at the moment, but WE CAN TOTALLY CHANGE THAT. GO FORTH AND LOVE. I'LL START: Holly is made of awesome and you know it.)

- Everyone's reccing it, but everyone's right. [livejournal.com profile] lim's vid 'Us' is a fast, complex commentary on what it means to be a fan, and to see things as a fan sees them, and how fandom takes the creative public domain and loves it both fiercely and constructively. It's difficult to explain, but you'll be glad you watched it.

- I just discovered this fic, tucked away in my 'Fanfic' bookmarks folder, waiting to be read. So I read it. And basically I have to rec it because it's bleak and confrontational and very good and about neurology, for goodness' sake: Finding The Words - due South, Fraser/Kowalski. (I will add the caveat that there is one aspect of that fic that I would have done very, very differently, but it's not my fic and I don't want to colour your reading of it. Come back here afterwards and we'll discuss!)

~

Oh, yeah.

Re: Millicon 2.0/ pxcon / Dragon*Con / other joyous gatherings scheduled to take place at least 10,000km away...

I hate you all. This is not a rational hatred, nor is it a particularly just one, but NEVER DOUBT ITS EXISTENCE.

fic rec!

I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time pimping the works of [livejournal.com profile] pirateygoodness, but she keeps writing things that are so crazy nobody else would even bother to humour the concept, let alone indulge it hilariously.

Ergo: If the Colonial Fleet Ever Finds Earth, They'd do Well to Take up Beet Farming

Four moments in Dwight and Angela's relationship that involved Battlestar Galactica.

Read and love.

~

In me-news, I am EVEN MORE SICK, wtf body, but have promised my mother I will clean the bathrooms, kitchen and family room today.

*girds self with tea and Panadol*
fahye: ([science] skeletal)
Course abbreviations, for future reference:

ACN = Advanced Cellular Neuroscience
I&I = Infection & Immunology
AP = Abnormal Psych
IBN = Issues in Behavioural Neuroscience

Okay. In the true spirit of Week 1, ie. The Week Where They Waste Your Petrol, I only had one lecture, the introductory ACN one where they tell us about the 60% exam (HURRAH! I approve of courses with large exam weightings). I also bought a parking permit, paid my semester fees, and wandered nostalgically around the campus for approximately ten minutes before deciding it was too damn hot and taking refuge in the air-conditioned medical school computer lab.

~

And now for some pimpage of links:

- [livejournal.com profile] loki013 linked to this fantastic Vanity Fair photoshoot, which is making me want to buy the magazine. I do not think I have ever bought a magazine - of any sort - in my life. But this...! Glamour! Film noir! Gorgeous people!

- [livejournal.com profile] setissma wrote an AU McShep fic, Wide Open Ocean, which I have not yet commented on because I am awful. But you should read it; everything Tai writes is infused with a careful, rich sense of love, and this shines through especially here because she's writing about a subject very close to her heart.

- And [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck also wrote fic. Slings & Arrows fic, in which she is enough of a Bard-geek to satisfy even my greedy soul. And it's Brynn, so it's hot and funny and absolutely spot-on in its characterisation of Geoffrey and Ellen. Live In Thy Heart, Die In Thy Lap, and Be Buried In Thy Eyes.
fahye: ([ga] alex fucking karev - headdesk)
But for now, Alex is content to just sit here and not fondle Candy's breast, while Mark makes clean, precise cuts and starts in on a surgery that's so textbook-perfect Alex is kind of turned on. Out of, like, manly professional jealousy or something.

Oh man. Okay. I am still getting my breath back after reading [livejournal.com profile] pirateygoodness and [livejournal.com profile] fox1013's cowritten epic, Bad Case Of Loving You.

It's Grey's Anatomy.

It's SEX POLLEN FIC.

It's about as porny as you'd imagine.

And it's hilarious. The character voices are perfect, and there are snatches of quirky bittersweet thought that make it a lot more than JUST sex pollen fic.

eg:

So Addison kissed Meredith Grey.

Which is weirdly closure-y, in a way. In the kind of way where the last leg of that dead triangle sealed itself and now she realizes that, if she'd played her cards right, the whole threesome thing could have been more than a throwaway joke. The kind of way where, right now, it's buzzing through her head and won't stop, insistently but soothingly humming, until it sounds like a vibrator you fell asleep using and only register the noise when the battery finally gives up and dramatically dies and you wake up and remember that, no, your husband still left you and you're considering shacking up with his ex-best friend.

You know. Hypothetically.

So yeah. Go and read it. Leave nice feedback.
fahye: ([house] maybe I resemble)
I am writing something and I am terrifying myself with it.

...

I was going to talk about it, but each description I come up with sounds more ridiculous than the last. Uh. This may just have to be one of those projects that I am cryptic and doomy about until it's done, at which stage I unleash it upon the world and spend the next month trying to rinse my brain with wholesome fluff.

Anyway. Other news. I had to gently remind my 17-year-old brother today that Valentines Day is coming up, which I think his girlfriend will be grateful for. Now, because I think I need to counter the poison of this fic for a while: what are your plans for Valentines Day, flist? Or what's something awesome that you've done/had done for you on this day in previous years? Or what's a good way to stage a peaceful rebellion, if you're single? Back in high school when most of my friendship group was single, we got together and watched very cynical movies and ate snacks and ranted about Singletonhood a la Bridget Jones & friends.

No matter your attitude, [livejournal.com profile] villainny has a great Valentines Message Post going where you can leave comments for friends or crushes or loved ones that will be unscreened on the day. Go forth and spread good emotions, devoid of commercialism!
fahye: ([ss] orsino - I must be kinda gay)
As I told Ji: this sums up my life ridiculously well.

This post brought to you by the package from [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck that arrived today <3333 You should all probably be prepared for me to start babbling about Shakespeare and Stoppard with even greater regularity.

ETA: *spittakes* EMMY. I THINK YOU SHOULD SEE THIS.

SMACKDOWN

31 Jan 2007 10:26 am
fahye: ([dw] rose - we'll laugh about it later)
I've never even watched the oldskool Doctor Who and this is STILL pretty much the coolest thing ever.

(link from [livejournal.com profile] taraljc)

Thanks to everyone who had something to say about my last post - I've read everything and I'll start formulating replies a little later in the day :)

Right! For now I am going to have breakfast, get dressed, and then watch The Silence of the Lambs. In full knowledge of the plot & ending. In broad daylight. With my door open. And probably clutching a mug of something aggressively harmless, like warm milk.

Watch, I'm going to manage to freak out anyhow.
fahye: ([ff] inara - for the beauty of each hour)
...because when really, really pretty sci-fi takes over my head, I SHARE. Yes, this is [livejournal.com profile] bantha_fodder's fault.

Inama Nushif - Children of Dune

I wish everything included musical montages this good.

(Need to track down icons. Stat. Preferably some featuring Atherton Wing Duncan Idaho.)
fahye: ([other] david tennant is ADORABLE)
I don't quite know how I am going to succeed in my goal of making every person I know watch this miniseries, but hopefully this will help.

Premise: it's a British crime musical. David Tennant's character has an oral fixation. That should be enough for any sane person, but to help you along...

The best musical numbers )
fahye: ([tw] tosh - emo lesbian techie)
Well, Hollywood just raped my childhood. (Again.)

But NEVER FEAR, INTERNETS. [livejournal.com profile] areyoumymemmy has put forth her own pitch, which returns to the original spirit of the books (her words).

*snerks*
fahye: ([r+g] if that were north)
My friends list is a hilarious/awesome place sometimes. I should do this more often.

- [livejournal.com profile] mercuriazs has solved all of our fandom woes with the concept of wikicanon.

- [livejournal.com profile] stars_like_dust wrote a sequel to Stupid Thing Last Night in which she sort of remixes Benevolent Sibling and includes gratuitous Kat/Racetrack and it's hilarious and hot and full of pilots both old and new. YAY.

- [livejournal.com profile] marenfic wrote Kinesic, a deliciously bitter Dee-POV piece focusing on 'Unfinished Business'.

- [livejournal.com profile] blackboggart should be getting way more attention from HP fandom than she is, because I think her art is just gorgeous (she's on a Remus kick at the moment).

- [livejournal.com profile] emiloy did a Jack fanvid to Savin' Me, which, well, come on. It had to be done sooner or later, and although it could certainly have been done better, this chooses some interesting clips to include. (Okay, I especially like it because it uses 'Small Worlds' footage, and I loved that episode to tiny pieces.)

- I believe I first got this recipe from [livejournal.com profile] bantha_fodder, though I could be wrong...anyway, these are the best cookies in the world. (I use the word 'cookies' for soft, chewy things like the ones that Subway makes, and 'biscuits' for harder ones like gingernuts. That is just me. I embrace all Western food terms!) I am making a batch this afternoon )

Finally...thank you, everyone who commented on my last post, though I really was serious when I said I wanted to hear what you liked about you :) I won't be ungracious, however; I was in a low spot, and there's no remedy quite like feeling loved. Thanks.
fahye: ([witb] scene of the crime)
Finally! It's been a fun few days digging through the archive, but:

here's what you should read )
fahye: ([ss] orsino - I must be kinda gay)
Oh, hello, new LJ update form. I doubt I'll be changing the way I use it much - I like to stick my own HTML tags into normal posts, and Semagic does me fine for fic.

It is way too hot for me to think. I am going to make myself an affogato and then go and read some more Watchmen in bed.

You should all go and read the fantastic little pilotfic that [livejournal.com profile] pirateygoodness wrote from my prompt: You And I Are a Gang Of Losers

Fahye out.

fahye: ([dw] an exact amount of time ago)
- Having wrestled Microsoft Access into submission (I could use it like a pro in Year 9, thanks to a dull term's work of database manipulation in IT), I now have a mostly-updated address list. If you have not commented to this post here and you would like to be on this list, PLEASE DO SO NOW.

- In other seasonal news, LJ is offering the Give More deal, which means that if you buy paid time as a gift for another user between now and the end of the year then they get the 100 userpics add-on FREE for the duration of the time that you purchased. THIS IS SUCH A COOL IDEA. It's also amusing that you can buy someone a lump of coal for their userinfo page, but I find the concept of those kinds of purchases to be a ghastly waste of money. If you want to buy someone pointless pixels, at least buy them THEIR CHOICE of pointless pixels, ie. icon space. (I suppose that $1 is not exactly exorbitant, but the miserly uni student in me still cries out in dismay at the very thought.)

- Working my way slowly through my to-do list. Currently sticking some files on DVD for my mother, who is even more obsessed with Doctor Who than I am (no, really, she recently rang me to spazz about how she was watching Jude solely for Christopher Eccleston and how she had discovered that David Tennant had a bit role in it too) and who I recently showed the Torchwood pilot. She wants more, and wants more now.

- I am on an enormous PILOTS high. It's great fun.

- This high has been in no way dimmed by [livejournal.com profile] ingrid_m's fantastic fic The Four Cornered Stone. It's post-'Unfinished Business' Lee/Dee, Dee/Gaeta and Lee/Kara and it's kind of excruciating if you are in any way fond of Lee, but at it's also very wicked, smart, and dark. Like that horrible 99% cocoa chocolate.

- Also along BSG lines: tomorrow's episode, 'The Passage', is the one written by Jane Espenson! Whoo! Battlestar Wiki informs me that it has lots of science (hurrah!) and that it is Kat-centric. If Ms. Espenson writes me Kat/Racetrack subtext of ANY KIND then I will die...pleased.

- If anyone can work out WTF is going on in this moodtheme picture of mine, I would be very interested to hear it.
