five favourite fics
9 Mar 2007 10:12 pmThis took a lot of thought, actually.
Suture, Doctor Who, Nine-Jack-Rose. So much love went into this. So much love and so much physics :D I could write ten more OT3 fics and I don't think I'll ever get the dynamic quite this raw and right; I wrote it in the first flush of awareness and enthusiasm, and rereading it still feels like self-indulgence.
Our Pataphysical Divigation, Battlestar Galactica, Kara/Lee. Academy!pilots is possibly my favourite subgenre of this, my OTP to end all OTPs, and out of all of the BSG fics I've done (which is a staggering amount by now, from my very unprolific perspective) I like this one best. It's sweet and careful and ever so slightly meta - about trying to hold together a normal life when the expectations are that you will be something amazing, or that you will fulfil a huge messy fiction for the entertainment of others. It's about falling in love with your best friend and learning how much - and how little - that can matter.
Crying Call (parts one, two, three & four), Firefly/Good Omens/Sandman. I can't help but be helplessly proud of this fic; it might be the best thing I've ever done. It has a solid plot and amusing characters, and...I don't know. I worked on it and worked on it and poured everything I had into it. I think every writer has one thing of which they can say: you don't quite know me until you've read this.
Paramagnetic, Torchwood, ensemble (slightly Jack/Suzie). This was the bane of my existence for so long that I had to either fall in love with it or detest it forever. Luckily, I retained a tenacious dedication to what made me want to write it in the first place - the great never-was that is Jack Harkness and Suzie Costello - and I think that it really does illustrate where my writing talent is these days.
Snapshots, Milliways. This fic has enormous emotional significance for me because it represents exactly how much this game has done for my writing and my understanding of character; yes, panfandom RPs are funny things and you're allowed your indulgent smiles, but I was involved in this one from the word go and it's shaped who I am and it means something to me. Something fierce. Something profound. I wrote this as a tribute to the awesome people I've played with and the things that they've helped me achieve. I am still thrilled at how every word just resonates with memory, and how eclectic the character list is: Crowley, Aziraphael, Adam Young, Lucifer, Thom of Trebond, Schuldig, Galahad du Lac, Mordred Pendragon, Joe Dick, Billy Tallent, Hob Gadling. Not many of them remain, but they were great while they lasted :)
( Honourable Mentions )
