4 Feb 2010 10:20 pmYou guys, Grey's Anatomy may be full of a lot of bullshit, but it was telling the truth about neurosurgeons. There are three (male) neurosurg registrars on the team; so far we (we being me + the other female med student on neuro at the moment) have met two of them, and they are both TALL and HANDSOME and one of them has hair that we are pretty much convinced he must blowdry and straighten every morning with loving care, so that it falls across his eyes just so. How the hell he makes it to 7am ward rounds every morning, I do not know. He looks like he should be in a boyband. In fact, we've decided that if we meet the third reg and he fits the general mould, then all three of them should START a boyband.
Yeah, this is what we're talking about when the resident is scoring patients on the Glasgow Coma Scale and the intern is checking overnight obs in the chart.

DEEP THOUGHTS on Legend of the Seeker (well, inasmuch as it is possible to have deep thoughts about this show): you can really tell that the source material is a wantonly misogynistic pile of garbage, because ugh, between the Mord Sith and the whole idea of Confessors (which I think actually surpasses SMeyer levels of hating on female sexuality) it's like the world was tailormade to be ripped apart and discarded by anyone with even a mild awareness of gender tropes. However! The TV show seems to be trying so, so hard to be true to its mission statement of swordfighty fun with occasional EMOTIONS and DESTINY and STUFF, all the while dragging its own stupid book canon around like a tangle of inconvenient chains. The deeply problematic worldbuilding is just completely at odds with the tone of the show and the way the characters are represented and the audience they seem to be aiming at (OH NO, RICHARD HAS NOT SWUNG HIS SWORD AROUND WHILST TOPLESS AND SWEATY AND BLEEDING IN A SEXY MANNER FOR -- ALMOST TEN MINUTES! RECTIFY! RECTIFY!).
That said, the Confessor plot device is possibly the funniest canonical cockblock I have ever encountered, largely due to the aplomb with which the characters make faces of great and epic sexual frustration at each other ALL THE TIME.
( and we'll finish with two screencaps )
