good sign? bad sign?

Whenever I'm writing I need a text that approaches the manner in which I'm writing, to flick through and read when I feel the flow of words diminishing, and I've just realised that what I need for this particular WIP is Mrs Dalloway, or in a pinch, The Hours.

Both of which are in Canberra.

Well, at least I've nailed down the playlist.

Very disappointed at the lack of LJ folk around to entertain me while I wrestle with the urge to punch my narrator in the head. It's Friday night so all sensible Aussies are probably out doing things that AREN'T writing fanfiction and consuming a $7 bottle of wine, and all inhabitants of other areas are -- well. Asleep (US) or productively occupied (UK), I'm guessing.

I'm too sick to be out. Is the flicking particularly necessary or would something like this do?

EXCELLENT. Thank you. I was staring at my story wondering where the sentence structure was going and then I realised I'd been trending steadily more Woolfian for a while.

I am around! Where by 'around', I mean 'flailing around in paperwork and also staring in deepening horror at the list of things I need to bring to grad school'. WHY DO PEOPLE NEED SO MUCH STUFF JUST TO EXIST IN THE DAY-TO-DAY. Contemplating giving it all up and running away to live a life of asceticism in some commune somewhere, or, never leaving my room again.

Guess which one is winning?

EVERY TIME I HAVE TO MOVE HOUSE THAT HAPPENS. I'm like, surely I do not NEED a whole car's worth of belongings just to eke out my existence in a single bedroom, and then I start contemplating the idea of not bringing all my jewellery or my boots or my textbooks or my TEAPOT and I submit to the inevitable.

Our first world problems are so terrible.

I'm just like, BUT THE ROOMS! THEY'RE SO UGLY! HOW CAN I LIVE IN THEM. Clearly I must bring a metric ton of soft furnishings and throws. And how am I expected to survive without a blender for smoothies! But all this pales in comparison to the fact that the sockets in the rooms are fused at 2amps, which means no electrical appliances with heating elements. Which, fine, I can use the kettle in the kitchen, but I can't use a hair-dryer.

I'm so oppressed. :(((((

I have no idea what sort of room I'll be living in next year. WILD ADVENTURES IN SEMI-RURAL AUSTRALIA.

Like hell am I productively occupied. TALK TO ME ABOUT ARTHUR.

Are you hideously busy this weekend? I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm gonna be in London, so... :D?

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Doing fuck-all diddly. Want to come and look at some art with me and maybe eat cake?

[identity profile] miscellanny.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
THAT SOUNDS VERY GOOD. I'm going to Debi's tonight and Marthe's from... three? tomorrow, but I have no idea tomorrow morning/Sunday, so probably sometime then if it's okay with ye? :D

OH THANK FUCK. Del, Del, he won't reveal shit, I thought I could get some backstory woven into this but apparently not. After 4280 words he IS starting to become emotionally coherent, though. And the personality-design thing is working out nicely.

Hang on, I will email you a bit :)

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
*fizz* Yeah he seems like a stubborn motherfucker. CLEARLY YOU NEED TO PRACTICE EXTRACTION ON THAT BITCH.

NNY. Will you be in London during January? I demand that you and Del take me to pubs.

I absolutely can be during Christmas holiday/weekends. :D

I'm in Holborn again! But can be persuaded to travel.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Holborn is convenient for many places. If the Green Carnation ever manage to actually OPEN and STAY OPEN I will drag you there to feel up the wallpaper, that place is fucking amazing and their cocktails are amazing and the waiters look like models.

Queer spaces! Yay! Today I sat through a 'hilarious' conversation about the times when people in my clinical class have been hit on by people of the same sex, and decided not to contribute my own opinion of intense admiration for the balls of said hitters-on. Myself being a world-class emotional coward with a tendency to stare wistfully at (presumably) straight girls.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha well if you are keen on the idea of going somewhere that is entirely full of very very gay girls when in London, I discovered Ruby Tuesdays at Ku (it's freeeee) but I warn you now, it is a sweaty basement and the music is only bearable if you are drunk. Although it was kind of funny watching the dancefloor EMPTY at "I Kissed A Girl" as about two hundred VERY ANGRY lesbians glared at the DJ.

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a sweaty basement type of person, alas. I'm a Civilised Drinks type of person.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured as much. Still! GC is full of professionals in their thirties who-are-also-gay.

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds amazing. I have been to exactly one gay event in Sydney and it was a nightclub and I was just like, I CANNOT COMMUNICATE WITH YOU, HOT GIRLS, THE MUSIC IS TOO LOUD.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's sadly the kind of the situation where you're required to flirt like a scene-gay, which mostly involves - as far as I can tell - grinding and checking out people's boobs. Which was ACUTELY TERRIFYING. And this is me, "Person Who Gets Thrown Out Of Nightclubs For Having Sex In The Corner (former)".

The Green Carnation, on the other hand, contains pretty people and nice booze. And a FIREPLACE. <3

[identity profile] the-grynne.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO DID THAT.

Although, usually, for me it's poets that I turn to, since I read so little fiction nowadays.

I was going to be doing thesis, and I did do that for a while, but then I had to bow to the inevitable and do more organising stuff for the SUMS gig on Thursday. *mournful* All the goddamn things. And now I have zero thesis motivation left because it is too late in the night to start working again.

[identity profile] tammaiya.livejournal.com 2010-08-13 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there are plus sides and down sides. The big plus right NOW is I have fuck-all contact hours. I will probably hate life and the universe to infinity in a few weeks, though...

Anyway, if you want to complain about Arthur at any point, feel free, after all the times you've let me soundboard off you over the years. *g*
