re: The Confusion

If my writing ever achieves half the complexity, erudition, hilarity, beauty and sheer balls-out geekiness of Neal Stephenson's, I will die a happy and fulfilled woman.

omg omg omg omg

I am not even halfway through yet. Given that there are >800 pages and I am sort of maybe meant to be doing many assignments and socialising this weekend, my conclusion is that there are not enough hours in the day -- in ANY day -- for the awesomeness of this book.

And I still have The System of the World waiting for me back in Sydney, too. Also >800pp. JOY.

Haha, mostly what I remember about The Confusion is that I was reading it around the time that the third Pirates of the Caribbean came out, and I kept getting confused by a proliferation of Pirate Jacks.

However, The System of the World I adored beyond words!

Stephenson is one of those writers of whom I make the assumption that most emotional payoffs will occur very late in the game. So the entire scene at le duc d'Archachon's birthday party with Eliza being badass at d'Avoux and actually getting Jack's message (man, I had assumed that would just NOT HAPPEN AT ALL) was like an explosion of joyfulness.

And Fatio being jealous about Newton, to the great amusement of Leibniz!

And everything Jack EVER SAYS EVER!

And I think the king of France has become one of my favourite characters.
