icon meme (kinda)
I'm not PROPERLY doing this meme, but a couple of people did ask me about icons. So! Quick moment of pixelated glee before I go and stare at my histology notes again. (And wish I had some chocolate. Sigh. There was SO MUCH chocolate at Tink's awesome Easter party last night but, unfortunately, it is the nature of chocolate gluttony that when you wake up eleven hours later you still wish you hadn't eaten your little Cadbury Deluxe bunny on Friday, because...you really feel like chocolate.)

I really love cityscapes, especially cityscape photography. And what I really like about this picture in particular is the midnight-dystopia feel, and the way the reflections of the buildings in the water look even more dystopian and jagged. I felt that I should have a big-city icon to use when I talk about Sydney, me being a small-city girl who finally made her Big Move, and all that.

I think this is BEAUTIFUL. As far as I can recall it's a photograph of Keira Knightley's legs (and why not?) but I just like staring at it, because the deep red against the dirty peacock green of the stairs is just...guh. Amazing. The comment and keywords are from the song 'Slow Show' by The National, because the composition and colouring of this icon remind me of the feel of that song.

by mercscilla - the flipside of life.
Let's face it, like most of the S1 Torchwood episodes, 'Countrycide' had some massive problems, but those brief frantic snarky scenes between Gwen and Owen when she got shot and he was trying to do field surgery on her...I liked those. They were instrumental in my immense (and lingering) love for them as a pairing. (Plus, this is a very pretty icon. Again with the red-on-green, and Gwen's hair all spilled out...yes.) The keywords are a reference to Nine's big rant at Jack in the Empty Child/Doctor Dances double, about learning to take responsibility for your actions because one day you'll be stuck in the little town just as the volcano erupts, and you'll have to deal with it. Or something. Anyway, a lot of crappy things happen to Gwen but she tends to treat them as part of the job, like either every day is volcano day or nothing big enough to count has shown up yet.
The comments are another reference to how much I love that Torchwood is a show about death. And an oblique reference to my favourite symbolic treatment of death ever, which is the flipping-the-boat thing from PotC:AWE.
DAMN I MISS TORCHWOOD. I want to watch S2! So badly! WHY MUST YOU BE DEAD, LAPTOP.

This is the icon that I uploaded as a very deliberate attempt to keep myself from going MAD during my first year of med school. It's Addison, of course, Addison the hot and kickass and talented and successful, having a moment of stressful meltdown. This is to remind me that everyone has their bad moments and you just have to keep going through them, and that one day I TOO could be as awesome as Addison (although, sadly, not as hot). The keywords and comments are from the song 'This Year', by the Mountain Goats -- I am gonna make it through this year if it kills me -- which is my song for 2008.

The words attached to this icon don't have a whole lot to do with the picture, but I associate both of them with Ji. Because she made this icon, and also introduced me to one of my favourite songs of the moment (and the song I wish I'd written), 'The Operation' by Charlotte Gainsbourg. It's SO COOL. Here, sample:
I want to examine
every inch of your frame
the pressure points that cause your joy and pain
our love goes under the knife
there is no room for doubt
now I'm inside you
my hands can feel their way
further inside than I have ever been
now I can really
mess around with your heart
and fill it to the brim with broken dreams

This is Light from Death Note. Light is a genius sociopath and FUCKING AWESOME and I am yet to be coherent about Death Note, so just trust me on how wonderful it is. It doesn't really lend itself to happy endings in any way (thus keywords) but I love that the interactions between the main characters are entirely cerebral for once, that emotion plays a subtle part but most of it is about speedy analysis and outhinking and arrogance and certainty of one's right to twist morality because of one's power and intelligence (which is, like, my favourite character trait IN THE WORLD, see also: Torchwood, Jack and Owen: his conviction that intelligence confers the right to bend the rules). The comments are from Delta Goodrem's song 'Lost Without You', which is in itself totally inappropriate for the icon and the series. But the song title manages to hint at the grudging codependence/need for stimulation and worthy competition between the two main characters, and that particular lyric refers to Light's need to build layers and layers of deception around himself to protect his secrets and his identity.

On the theme of 'things Fahye is yet to be coherent about', um, this is Tony Hill and Carol Jordan from The Wire in the Blood, one of my eternal OTPs (that link goes to a pimp post I made about the series a while back). I think the composition there is lovely. The keywords are from a drabble that Ji wrote me about these characters -- They have laid out the map and are waiting for something to go wrong. The weight of it between them creates impasse. The sins of others between them are no man's land. -- and the comment is a direct quote from the last episode they have together, where Tony is asking Carol to come skydiving with him. I just. JDAAIUSAISHNKDASDJ. THEY ARE SO WONDERFUL. YOU SHOULD ALL WATCH THIS SHOW.
