[dexter] one good deed in all my life
by weapon_icons - I do repent it from my very soul
This icon is just gorgeous, isn't it? I love what they did with the dramatic shot of Dexter standing in the corridor outside the ROOM OF TRUTH & BLOOD. The keyword and comments are kind of an ironic trick -- they're from Titus Andronicus (which is very blood-soaked itself, really), the last words of Aaron the Moor (who is one of Shakespeare's most unrepentant villains, like Iago):
O, why should wrath be mute, and fury dumb?
I am no baby, I, that with base prayers
I should repent the evils I have done:
Ten thousand worse than ever yet I did
Would I perform, if I might have my will;
If one good deed in all my life I did,
I do repent it from my very soul.
The keyword line is misleadingly positive, because Dexter tries to live a moral life within his unique code of ethics, and to do good things for the people in his life. But when you add the comment line, the idea becomes not being sorry for the evils one has committed, which Dexter isn't; he might wish that he didn't feel compelled to kill, but he doesn't regret 'taking out the trash'.
[ss] shame those stars
by dork_icons - misadventur'd piteous overthrows.
So...I guess I'm going to be talking about Shakespeare again :D Awesome. This is Claire Danes as Juliet from Baz Luhrmann's William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, which is actually one of my favourite films ever. And one of my favourite Shakespeare plays ever, because it has so many gorgeous lines in it; I quote two of them here.
Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven,
Having some business, do entreat her eyes
To twinkle in their spheres till they return.
What if her eyes were there, they in her head?
The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars,
As daylight doth a lamp; her eyes in heaven
Would through the airy region stream so bright
That birds would sing and think it were not night.
This is from the 'but soft!' speech which wasn't actually used in the film -- the balcony scene became a swimming pool scene, but as a nod to tradition we have the shot seen in the icon, where Juliet leans on the balcony just before the Capulet party. And she's so pretty, man. I thought it was apt. And, okay, there may have been a Stardust joke slipped in there as well (stars? Claire Danes? yeah).
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents' strife.
From the Prologue, of course. I don't know. I think it's great fun to say. And it's one of those lines that I stole and warped for my Juliet sonnet.
[other] golden ratios & golden apples
by schiarire - make your own mythology.
This is a shot from A Very Long Engagement, another of my favourite films. It's all beautiful and yellow-tinted, just like the film itself. The keyword/comment here is more madness and less method: the spiral of the lighthouse stairs reminded me of the pictures of the golden ratio spiral (even though it isn't one), and I wanted another 'golden' phrase to reinforce the yellowness, so...I hijacked a Greek myth, which is one of those things that I do far too often (and the comment acknowledges this).
[nar] waiting for a pulse
by antikku_kohiten - oh man. I fucking love hebi. nutcases all around <3
KJDHKAHSDKJAD. I am nowhere near removed enough from my initial adoration for this icon that I can speak about it without capslock. Okay. It's taken from the Naruto manga -- the BEST CHAPTER OF ALL THE CHAPTERS, in fact -- which I love so much that I have uploaded the scanlation as a zip folder. (It's only 18 pages/5MB. And it's awesome. GO NOW.)
ETA: Aha! You can also read it online. Which is probably easier, even if the quality is a bit poorer.
This chapter features a lot of random nakedness and a HILARIOUS dig at all those girls who fancy the idea of guy-on-guy action, wink wink nudge nudge, and also one of the quietest & most emotionally perfect (and, well, EPICALLY GAY) moments in the entire series to date, though that last is more difficult to appreciate out of context.
The short explanation for the icon keywords is that the blue-haired kid, Suigetsu, is testing Sasuke (genius ninja and angstbucket extraordinaire) by threatening him and trying to sense if his pulse changes. Which it doesn't. Because Sasuke is an awesome freak*. I love the colouring (because the manga's B&W, obviously, so any manga icons have to be coloured by fans) and the TEXT, omg, because one of the great things about that scene is the semi-anachronistic nature of Suigetsu's hand position during the threat. The Naruto world has a weird mixture of traditional ninja weapons and modern technology, but nobody's ever been seen to use a gun. Which in no way means they don't exist in the canon universe, seeing as they have alarm clocks and computers and lots of other things. Anyway, I like deliberate anachronism.
The comments refer to Sasuke's recruitment of Suigestu (& a couple of other characters) to create his POSSE, which he calls Hebi (snake). It's just. Sasuke has spent so long being silent and deadly and totally not caring about anyone around him, and suddenly he picks up a POSSE and they are all TOTAL NUTCASES in the most entertaining and adorable anime tradition, and they make Sasuke look like a rational and balanced human being in comparison. Which is no mean feat considering the epic levels of upfuckery Sasuke has (Zuko ain't got nothing on this kid). Anyway, it was totally unexpected and wonderful and I sent very spazztastic emails to

STOCKHOLM SYNDROME, I TELL YOU. No, in all seriousness, I'm glad I stuck with it. Because the quality of Shippuuden is just so good. Even if there hasn't been nearly enough Kabuto.
