call for fandom-specific prompts!

*head in hands*

My attention span is shot to hell. I have downloaded 61 songs used in the first season of Bones, I am sitting here with my fingers poised above the keyboard and ideas dancing around vaguely, but the characters still aren't cooperating, and the only way I'll ever get to Yuletide is if I manage to release some of the energy that is currently forming a BONES BONES BONES ZOMG cyclone inside my head.

So...anyone who is familiar with my newest obsession, want to throw me Five Things prompts? For any of the show's characters, I don't mind, but I need to start writing about them somehow and this is usually a good warmup.

This icon is called 'tony & roxie do vegas' and it is my new favourite 100x100 pixelated square in the universe.

I AM SO LOST, YOU GUYS. SO LOST. OTP-ED TO DEATH.

I suck and don't know the fandom! Would you like to tell me five things you love about Bones? Five things I would love about Bones? I will totally put it on my To-Watch Over Winter Break list. :D

Okay!

1) This may seem weird, but...the sets. The main set for the Jeffersonian lab is enormous and air-filled and with these fascinating mixtures of plants and balcony walkways and steel tables and computers. And then sometimes they'll just be all, hey, let's have an entire episode IN A DESERT. Or in Vegas.

2) This could just be because I've never actually watched an American crime procedural before (my experience is with the British ones, which are...VERY different) but I find all of the plots fascinating! Sometimes they're easy to call, but more often the twists are very twisty and the character motivations are interesting and the amount of dirty laundry uncovered is as good as a soap opera. And the scripting is tight, too, which makes all the difference.

3) SCIENCE. The science is great and -- importantly -- unapologetic. This is a show about scientists doing what they do best, and while there are an awful lot of geek jokes, they're never nasty. The show celebrates the kind of person who might not be all that good at social interaction, but who throws themselves into their field of interest, and it makes the characters completely likable and sympathetic.

4) The characterisation is consistent, and smart, and complex. It is impossible not to develop a deep and sincere affection for every single one of the core characters. And the friendships between them aren't just stock friendships, they have unique and endearing characteristics.

5) BOOTH AND BRENNAN. Their partnership is so ridiculously, completely wonderful. They complement each other, they bicker ALL THE TIME, they are reflexively protective of each other, they are great friends, and I have never seen any TV couple act so married in my whole life. They kick down all of my cynicism and make me want kisses and sneaky confessions and a long, careful, honest love story. Because their love for each other just glows, even if it never comes out in more than silly gifts and comforting hugs and the willingness to break rules and kick down doors to save each others' lives.

Five things Brennan likes about Booth but will never, ever mention to him.

And that is a most excellent icon.

1) The way he will always, always start to explain a pop culture reference to her. He might break off after a couple of sentences, especially if they're busy with something else, but he seems physically incapable of ignoring her ignorance. For her own part, she has often wondered if it would just be easier to nod as though she understands, but she's found that she gets a quiet rush of appreciation at the way he looks at her when he's trying to explain something: as though it is deeply important to him that they should be able to share these meaningless pockets of culture.

2) The way he pretends to be upset when she orders a salad and then steals half of his fries, but still never fails to order them without ketchup because he knows she prefers them that way.

3) His rotator cuff muscles bespeak not only physical fitness but also an excellent underlying structure of the bones comprising the shoulder joint. She has considered telling him this, but doesn't think he'd fully appreciate the spirit of the compliment.

4) The way he shows up at her door when she's feeling cranky or lonely or in need of a good argument; the way he refuses to take no for an answer, even when she's convinced she'd rather be alone, and the way she'll glance up from her mug of coffee half an hour later and realise that she didn't want to be alone after all.

5) Sometimes when they're working, or even when they're just going to grab a meal, he'll direct her with his hand. Just brief, easy, utterly confident touches on her shoulder or the small of her back, touches that bring her two inches closer to him and prompt Angela to shoot meaningful glances across the lab that Brennan cannot translate. She still speaks up against this physical bossiness, just so that he doesn't get the idea that he can treat her like something he owns, but she actually finds his ridiculous masculine territory-marking behaviour...kind of sweet.

See, I was never all that keen on Angel in Buffy. And I've never watched AtS. So stumbling across Booth was like this epiphany of DEAR GOD, THIS MAN IS ATTRACTIVE.

[identity profile] pathstotread.livejournal.com 2007-11-22 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
And I've never watched AtS.

ACK! I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that. *sticks fingers in ears* Much as I love Buffy, I love AtS about ten million times more.

That said, I have a much more visceral reaction to DB as Booth. That has partly to do with the character himself, and partly to do with the fact that DB was a little, shall we say, less fit in the last few seasons of AtS. But that's happily rectified now.

1) Yes, he knows what a scapula is. And a clavicle. And he's been around squints long enough, and suffered through enough of Zack's desperately earnest rants, that he is also familiar with ulnas and femurs and even the significance of the pubic symphysis. However, he still insists that they translate for him: he considers it a public service. Someone has to teach them how to communicate with normal people.

2) There's a distracted, wide-eyed look she gets on her face when she's fishing around in her incredible memory for a word that has momentarily escaped her tongue. It's too adorable for words.

3) For some reason, she can't say 'acetabulum' without a hint of some European accent. As soon as he realised this, Booth got Zack to explain the meaning of the word to him, and now he likes to poke hopefully at the hip joints of her skeletons, just in case she says that one word while she's telling him off for touching evidence.

4) The best way to get her to forget that they're having an argument is to ask her to back up a conclusion with detailed evidence. After twenty minutes of pointing out tiny bone ridges and dragging Hodgins up to recite the chemical composition of soil residue, she's so absorbed in geek-speak that it can take a while for her to remember how to carry on a conversation, let alone how to argue.

5) Secretly, Booth is convinced he knows just as much about society's workings as she does. But Bones getting flustered and impatient and firing around words like 'anthropologically speaking' and 'archaic gender representations' is actually really, really hot.

now I am logged on! Yay!

1) "Someone's looking this way," she hissed urgently, and Booth made a mental note to teach her not to hiss while undercover. "We should kiss. To look less suspicious."

He snorted. "Bones, have a little dignity. That's the biggest cliche in the book."

"What? Booth, shut up."

He had just enough time to remember that she'd probably never seen any of the movies or TV shows that created the cliche, and then her hands locked behind his neck and she was doing a very convincing job of kissing him.

He decided not to argue the point.

2) She only meant to kiss him on the cheek, because he hadn't reacted weirdly to the first occurrence of that like she had worried he might, but he chose that moment to frown at Zack's map and turn his head to look at her.

"Do you think that --" he started, but her lips were already headed towards the spot where his cheek had been a moment before, and she was too surprised to pull away.

3) "It's all in the planning, man," Hodgins said. "The right time, the right place, a little music, a grand romantic gesture..."

"I'm not very good at gestures." Zack's brow furrowed.

"Nah, Zack, don't worry about it." Booth laid a hand on his back. "Girls appreciate spontaneity as well."

The kid looked pathetic. "I don't think I'm very good at that either."

"It's easy." Bones was walking up the steps with a folder in her hands and her mind clearly decades away and he was going to get in so much trouble for this, but what the hell. "You just --" and he grabbed her arm, swung her in a half-circle, and then pressed his lips gently against hers.

"MmmnnnfffBooth," she ground out, pushing him away, but her lips were parted and she looked adorably furious and it was totally worth it.

4) "Booth!" she shouted. "Booth!" and God, she really shouldn't have worn these stupid heels because she was trying to run up a metal staircase and she kept getting caught in the gaps and what if she wasn't fast enough?

She reached the landing: "Dr. Brennan -" someone started, and tried to take hold of her sleeve, but Booth was at the other end of the corridor and half-sitting against the wall, and there was blood on his shirt, and she couldn't tell if his eyes were open or not. So she shook the person off and ran, her heels dragging against the thin hotel carpet, and then dropped to her knees beside him.

"Hey, Bones." He coughed and then winced. "Fun night, but a little uneventful for my liking, you know?"

"You shouldn't talk," she ordered him. "You shouldn't --" and she leaned in and kissed him, fiercely, just because he was her partner and he was alive.

5) Cam's advice had been no advice at all, really, just a knowingly raised eyebrow and a laugh low in her throat. Hodgin's had been an even louder laugh, along with a clap on the shoulder and an amused "Finally, man."

Zack...well, he decided not to talk to Zack.

Angela, however, had opened her eyes very wide and then shoved him down into a chair and given him the Best Friend Talk, in which she assured him that he was good enough for Brennan (in her opinion) but if he broke her heart then she was sending an embarrassingly small naked photo of him to the entire Jeffersonian. Possibly the entire FBI as well.

"But --"

"I'm an artist and a master of Photoshop, Booth." Angela grinned. "Do this right, you hear me?"

Everyone had different opinions of what 'right' was. Booth agonised about it for two days and was still agonising when they were standing outside the diner, in the rain, shaking droplets off their clothing before entering, and Bones did this funny thing with her lips as she laughed at his soaked hair, and all of his painstaking plans flew out of the window. He just pulled her closer by the lapels of her coat, watched her face change, and then kissed the surprise from her mouth.

Five of Bones' favourite bones:

1) The thoracic vertebrae. Someone in one of her tutorials once said that they look kind of like elephants, and now she can't pick one up and look at it without smiling.

2) The manubrium of the sternum. It can be very useful in a forensic setting involving any sort of trauma to the chest region, and it's got that beautiful V-shaped notch on it, like a signature. Not that she's at ALL inclined towards creationism.

3) The clavicle is the only bone that she is more fond of when it is part of a real living person. She likes to follow the line of it with her fingertips and her lips.

4) The hyoid has cinched cases for her more often than any other bone, and she kind of identifies with it; it doesn't show up in that silly hip bone's connected to the thigh bone song because it has no connections, really, no articulations at all. It just hangs there alone in its swathes of ligaments and cartilage.

5) She likes all of the skull bones, because their whole is so much more than the sum of their parts. An individual maxilla or sphenoid can give you hints as to pathology, but an entire skull gives you an identity. (Sometimes she's envious of Angela for her ability to facilitate this transition.)

Five drinks Booth and Brennan never shared:

1) At the Christmas party that got ruined by lung-fungus, Angela had carefully prepared a large glass of extra-alcoholic eggnog and was fully intending to make Booth and Brennan drink it. And then maybe act a little drunker than she was, and grab them by the hands and dance them over to the mistletoe before one of them noticed, and then start cheering so loudly that all the attention would make escape impossible.

Of course, all of her brilliant preparation was for nothing. But she's a patient woman, and there's always next Christmas.

2) "Just order your coffee, Bones."

"I don't want a whole cup of coffee. I'll just have some of yours."

"You say that, and then I get my cup back and there's only an inch left."

"Hello?"

"Bones. You couldn't have just let it ring while you -- she'll have a latte, thanks."

"I'll be right there -- no! No, I won't have a latte. Ignore him. We're leaving."

"We are?"

"Yes, we are. Hodgins knows where the second body is."

3) Booth dragged her out to some strange -- and very popular -- bar with the promise that he was going to buy her the best beer she'd ever tasted in her life. After close to fifteen minutes working his way through the insane queues at the bar, he returned to the table triumphantly waving two bottles. Ten seconds later, he dropped one.

"Shit." He looked so despondent that Brennan almost laughed. Instead she said,

"It's all right, Booth. We'll just share this one."

"No! No, Bones, this is the beer of the gods. You're having a whole bottle."

"But the queue..."

"No problem." He set the single bottle down in front of her and turned back to the bar, digging in his pocket for his badge. "Hey! FBI, coming through!"

4) "It's a Chilean herb tonic, it's really interesting, Booth. You should be prepared to try things from cultures outside your own, you know."

"Bones, it smells like rotting grass. No."

She tried to wave the glass at him. "You know, the people who make this put great stock in it as a promoter of strength and sexual prowess."

His face wavered for a moment, then his eyes narrowed and he headed over to her fridge. "Well, I...I don't think I need any tonics to help with that, Bones, thanks all the same. Where's the --"

"Second shelf," she said automatically.

5) Ivy Gillespie spent most of her $100,000 sending her granddaughter to medical school, but she also sent Brennan a bottle of very expensive champagne. The bottle lives at the back of her kitchen cupboard, and Brennan tells herself that she'll pull it out one evening after a very difficult case, and she and Booth will drink it while slouched on her couch with their feet propped on the coffee table. But case follows case and nothing ever seems quite special enough; Brennan's not sure what she's waiting to celebrate, but she's as patient as anyone who works on a timescale of centuries, and she knows that one day the timing will be right.

Five necklaces that mean something special to Brennan

&

Five intriguing conversations Angela overhears

&

Five things that Booth knows Bones hates

[identity profile] pirateygoodness.livejournal.com 2007-11-22 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry. . .work makes it tough to write, because there's so much non-English input around. That said?

Three things Booth knows Bones hates (and one thing he knows she doesn't):

1. Sugar in her coffee. He knows it's probably from pulling countless all-nighters all cozy with her skeletons, (not long nights watching a target's house in the cold and wet, hugging a rifle like it's his friend) which isn't really something he's going to pretend to understand, but he sort of likes it.

He hates his with sugar, too.

2. Commercials with stats in them, the kind that set her off on rants about "eroding all critical thinking" and "misrepresentation of evidence that's specious and one-sided at best."

He always makes sure he changes the station whenever the radio switches to ads.

3. Booth knows that Brennan hates inter-departmental paperwork with a passion that borders on dangerous. So it's not really much of a stretch for any of the squints when he tells them to call him when she's not in the kind of mood that has her hunched over her desk, muttering long strings of way-too-academic curse words. It's totally reasonable.
The fact that he can't be around her because it's the cutest thing he's ever seen in his life?

That's a secret he'll be taking to his grave.

4. She always puts on that irritated schoolteacher frown - the kind that sort of reminds him of the nuns he used to go to school with, if the nuns had been younger than a thousand and kind of sexy (in a messy, best-friend sort of way). But Booth knows that even if she goes to all the trouble of looking irritated while she points again and again at the carpals and metacarpals and shows him how they fit together to form a hand, she sort of likes explaining.

That's why he keeps asking.
