I sodding hate mascara. I. hate. mascara. I have very long lashes, so the clumps tend to gather obviously on the very ends of them and teeter there like they're enjoying the thrill and possibly considering some kind of abseiling mission into my eyes. And no matter how careful I am to choose decentish brands or to look for packaging that has the words 'no clumps!' on it, THERE ARE ALWAYS CLUMPS. Other people manage it. Maybe my lashes are cursed. Despite it all, I retain a sense of hopeless gullibility that stems from the desperate hope that one day, one day, I will find non-clumping mascara.

Revlon: NO CLUMPS THIS TIME! Come on, baby, you can trust me.
Me: I don't know, I've been hurt before.
Revlon: But I've changed! New formula! I've had classes, I know better now, you know I love you...
Me: All right then.
Clumps: *duly appear*

But I have to wear mascara because I can't afford to get my lashes tinted until the school holidays end and I can start tutoring again. Grr. Argh.

a) I don't know if they still make it, but there was... god, was it Cover Girl? Some mainstream brand has a "lash darkener" that doesn't really try to add length, just color.

b) Have you tried applying w/ the wand vertical? I usually have good luck with that. Gently wipe the excess on toilet paper or whatever, hold the wand with the tip pointing down and apply to just a couple lashes at a time.

a) Oh, that would be good for me. I don't need the length at all, but my lashes do get very pale at the ends.

You probably know this already but a good tip for applying mascara is to move the wand from side to side as you're swiping your lashes. It not only helps avoid clumps but generally applies the mascara more evenly along the lashes.

Um, it's like semi-permanent hair dyes, only for lashes? It's great for people like me who have long lashes that get pale at the ends - it doesn't make them thicker or longer, only darker, and it's waterproof and lasts for a couple of months.

I use... Maybelline? The kind I have comes in a pink bottle with a green cap, and it's sort of the best non-ridiculously expensive mascara on the market, at least IMO and the opinion of a lot of my friends. I make no promises, but it's lovely and it works for me, so you could give it a shot maybe?

Okay, HERE IS THE TRICK. It was shown to me by a very nice gay gentleman at the MAC counter in Halifax. Take a tissue and - seriously - blot the mascara wand once you take it out of the bottle. THEN, put the mascara on. You'll have to use more swipes, but there actually is enough inside the bristles to coat your eyelashes, and when you blot there's not so much that they clump. It is the BEST ever.

The problem that I have with mascara is that I must have very oily eyelashes, or something, because in a couple of hours all the mascara has fallen off my lashes and under my eyes, leaving me looking like an overworked panda.
