RIGHT. This is a quick-and-dirty plea for commentary (doesn't have to be anything more than surface impressions, but if you want to go deeper, go for it!) relating to one Azula of the Fire Nation, because I have a long and wonderful fic just beginning to crystallise in my consciousness. I'm not even going to start it until I've finished S2 of Avatar and written my Remix assignment and gathered some of my resilience back (no more soulless fics. not for a while.) but I want to collect ideas.

hobviously and my ideas are a bit clearer as a result, but I want to hear from everyone else. Tell me about her father, and her brother, and her firebending, and how she likes Ty Lee's cheerful amorality and even more she likes the fact that Mai isn't scared of her, but how sometimes she lies awake staring at the stars and wondering if she won't have to kill Mai one of these days.
(I also need music for an Azula playlist; so far I have eleven songs, but I need more.)

I wish I knew characters who deserved Destroyer songs . . . I have only ever connected Camille/Painter in Your Pocket and me/lots of lyrics, especially the indie rock meta ones.

I AM VERY SAD THAT I HAD LONG SINCE NARCOLEPSED WHEN YOU WANTED TO TALK AND META ABOUT AVATAR AT ME. THAT IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE PASSTIMES. I AM VERY CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT YOU SAID TO PDL RE: THIS.
Anyways, about Azula! I have a lot of meta in me about her that most of the Avatar fandom doesn't want to listen to because they're lame AND DO NOT APPRECIATE HOW AWESOME SHE IS.
Of course, the point at which Azula like seriously blows your mind above and beyond the MIND-BLOWING PREVIOUSLY is in the season two finale, which you have not seen! Though I do wonder what episode you have seen up to!
That said, Azula is a ruthless patriot. She is a perfectionist who demands that same level of competency from everyone around her. If they can't provide that, then she has no use or regard for them. I think she feels like everyone has a role to fulfill and a proper place, but if they don't perform up to standard then they should be replaced. I think this is definitely borne out in her choice of friends, since considering her archetype at first glance you would probably expect her to be entirely derisive or dismissive of non-benders (somewhat like the attitude one gets from Toph), but she's actually even more clever and dangerous I think because she's more than capable of appreciating how ridiculously efficient Mai and Ty Lee are regardless of their placement on the warrior totem pole so to speak. I think that her bending is just an extension of her self, something that she also needs to be in line with that same standard of perfection.
And though it is not about Azula exactly, I love what you said about Ty Lee's cheerful amorality because it is like ridiculously hard to get most people in this fandom to consider anything besides TY LEE IS GOOD AND OF THE LIGHT SINCE SHE IS CHEERFUL WHILST MAI IS CLEARLY EVIL AND IRREDEEMABLE BECAUSE SHE IS GOTH
AND A THREAT TO ZUKO/KATARA OMG.Back to Azula, I don't think she would wonder if she might not have to kill Mai one of these days as much as she would know that it would be prudent once something came along that Mai found more interesting or more in her best interest than doing what Azula says. And it wouldn't be something she'd look forward or dread, just something she'd accept as yet another necessity in the continuing pursuit of her goal, which is the triumph and glory of the Fire Nation.
And I cannot really talk about HER BROTHER or more until you have watched the finale!

Mai is in her own way just as self-serving as Azula is, whereas Ty Lee is more likely to go along with Azula so as not to cause a fuss. It's true that at the moment Mai is kicking ass for Team Azula because it's the least boring option available to her, but there's the possibility - as you say - of
surly princelingssomething else providing more potential for entertainment in the future. And Azula is both very smart and very much a compartmentaliser: as soon as Mai steps over the line from 'patriot' to 'traitor' - which she would, if she chose to align herself with said princeling in any way - the she'd be written off decisively. Azula wouldn't kill her BEFORE then, but I am pretty sure she's considered the possibility of it happening.no subject
