thank goodness for electricity...
I'm alive, and my house is standing. Though if any embers get blown onto Red Hill our house is almost certainly doomed, so I'm praying that the situation doesn't escalate too far. My dad and I drove back from the coast last night after watching the news, to fireproof the house (we spent this morning clearing the roof gutters), but we had no power for most of today. It's only just come back on, I have no idea about the rest of Canberra.
I'm worried about Sam Siripol in Chapman, she'll probably have been evacuated. My relatives live on her street and they're okay but they said other houses in their street went down. Also Maddy evacuated after some of her backyard got burnt.
This IS depressing, but I can't bring myself to be funny and cheerful when so much is happening, I'll feel like a hypocrite.
I've been reading Left Behind, a novel about the apocalypse and the last days of the earth after the Rapture... freaky stuff, especially with the fires. Not that this is the end of the world, just noticing the way communities deal with crises and stuff like that.
Did you hear Qantas is providing free flights out of Canberra for people whose homes burnt down, reduced fares into Canberra for relatives and free blankets and food to the aid organisations? Good for them, I say.
I hope you're all okay, your houses are all standing, and that you're not being made to eat airline food :-)
Ah, I couldn't help it. We need some humour at the mo.
I have finally been able to recharge my phone, so call or SMS me at any time. I'm feeling rather alone.
