end of year meme
1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?
Lived in a rural town. Received financial support from the government. Aspirated ascitic fluid from someone's abdomen.
2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I make enough resolutions that I then proceed to break during the year itself, I see no point in making official ones. I am working on drinking less, though.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
I'm fairly sure some of my English cousins did (I have lost track of their babies, there are so many), and my friend L had an adorable baby boy whose photos I am STALKING VIA HER BLOG.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My grandfather, although that probably only counts as 'close' in the technical sense. We weren't close emotionally.
5. What countries did you visit?
Other than Australia: England and Belgium.
6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
A JOB AND STEADY INCOME, OH WAIT THAT'S DEFINITELY HAPPENING. WOOOOO. A girlfriend would also be nice.
7. What date from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
December 2nd was the day I left medical school behind forever in a glorious, glorious haze of cider and Pimms.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I passed every single one of my final exams with above-average marks and with a minimum of mental breakdowns, and also received my provisional registration as a medical professional therefore qualifying me to be addressed as Dr Fahye BSc MBBS. Oh yeeeeeah. Letters ALL AROUND MY NAME.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Yet another rendition of my patented 'three dates, lose interest, painful dumping' dating pattern.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Caught norovirus gastro from some patient in the rehab ward, bleugh. Also had an episode of food poisoning from my favourite Chinese restaurant :(
11. What was the best thing you bought?
I, uh. Good question. Two days ago I went on a work-clothes shopping spree (my parents gave me a Myer voucher for my birthday/Xmas present) so I'm still floating on the cloud of joy from those purchases. Shoes! Skirt! Dress! Shirt! I am going to be the Best Dressed Intern, guys. I expect to win a freaking prize.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My family.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The denizens of all those online comment sections I keep reading even though I know it's a really bad idea.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Food. And maybe nail polish, I don't know, I bought a LOT of that.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Mira Grant's Deadline, Patrick Rothfuss's The Wise Man's Fear and Sarah Rees Brennan's The Demon's Surrender. TRILOGIES <3
16. What song will always remind you of 2011?
Embarrassingly enough, Take That's 'Love Love'. I listened to it a lot walking around town and it always improved my mood. Plus, hey, GAY DISCO MUTANTS.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Probably slightly sadder.
ii. thinner or fatter? No clue.
iii. richer or poorer? SO much poorer.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing, writing, writing, writing and writing.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Aimless internet surfing.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Christmas at home with family, tick, done.
21. How will you be spending New Year's?
...at home with family? I intend to watch the Edinbugh Military Tattoo and then read Discworld books. I am super cool.
22. Did you fall in love in 2011?
No.
23. How many one-night stands?
None.
24. What was your favorite TV program(s)?
I refuse to choose between The Good Wife and Parks & Recreation.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No. I don't really hate anyone.
26. What was the best book you read?
I'm going to do a proper post with my 2011 book round up (including 5 favourite and 5 best) but if I have to pick one now-right-now... I read Jane Eyre for the first time and immediately started kicking myself for waiting so long.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Adele.
28. What did you want and get?
A degree.
29. What did you want and not get?
The ability to work seriously on original fiction.

I only saw it two days ago, but I fucking loved the Tintin movie.

I had breakfast with two of my best friends, and then...sat around the house. Probably worked on my Yuletide. Probably watched some TV. I don't know, it was a very uneventful day.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Not failing quite so hard at relationships.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
Time-pressed. I put more effort into cosmetics because I couldn't afford any more clothes and the ones I owned were slowly wearing out.
34. What kept you sane?
Reading books. Heather Dale's music. The existence of certain people, including but not limited to
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Dianna Agron WHAT OK SHUT UP she's so prettyyyy. Honorable mentions to Julianna Margulies and Tom Hiddleston. (ETA: And Zachary Levi! Whoa, my brief and intense love affair with Chuck seems so long ago now, I'd forgotten it was at the beginning of this year.)
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
I am going to copy Highly's answer word-for-word here: I don't think I felt particularly stirred at all. I'm interested/invested in the Australian marriage equality campaign, but it's hard to feel enthused by something which drags out for so long.
37. Who did you miss?
My Sydney-based friends :(
38. Who was the best new person you met?
I didn't exactly meet her, but I got to know one of the other med students in Orange really well via her driving me to and from hospital, and she was a pretty awesome person to share the everyday screaming stress of med school with.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011:
That is far too imposing a question for this time of night.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Please shed all preconceptions about how cool I may or may not be. OK.
It's not too late
Think of what could be if you rewrite the role you play
Take a step before you leap
Into the colours that you seek
ADAM LAMBERT, HE SPEAKS TO THE SPARKLY PARTS OF MY SOUL.

And SPEAK TO ME OF TINTIN, I saw it the other day and was ridiculously charmed, but then the holidays happened, so I haven't actually talked with anyone about it.
