LUNCHBREAK. Time for long-winded meme.

I think it would be fun to talk about stories, but the usual memes are like, "What happens next?" "Tell me about Character A?" Which isn't so much talking about stories as it is writing more of a story. But you know how sometimes you read something and you're like, "I got ___ out of this story, I wonder if I have that right?" or "What on earth was ____ supposed to be?" and it's too awkward to ask the author? Now you could totally ask!

I've heard people say that writing is hard because you have to make decisions, but we never really talk about the decisions we make with stories or why we make them. We talk about plot bunnies, but not about how we actually turn them into a story.

And it seems like a lot more fun to do that than to do work.

So, if you want, ask me questions! (Or use this to ask your flist to ask you questions).

What were you trying to do [here]? Why did you decide to ____? This is what I thought about XYZ, is that what you were going for? What made you write ____? Why did you decide to do this? And so on.

Seriously, folks, nothing makes me happier than going on and on and on and on about my writing. HAVE AT.

(BTW, if your question is 'what the FUCK is going on with the Merlin heist AU??', the answer is 'I wrote some of Chapter 4 last night!')

- How is it you decide the general theme and tone and symbolism of a story? Is it just part of the genesis? How do you go about achieving that effect?

- Some of your stories are fairly typical narratives (Unlisted Side Effects of Metacetamin-Derived Opiates, most of Crying Call) while others feel more like a string of individual moments, very fragile and dreamlike (to cover a bruise, the Ouran fics, Healer, Tip of Your Tongue). Do you consciously choose which format a fic is going to take, and what do you think determines which you use? Has anything ever switched from dreamlike to standard or vice-versa while writing? How do you DO it, anyway?

- How do you choose the preview/summary quotes? Do you pick your favorites, or the ones that you think are most tantalizing, or the best examples of the tone of the fic, or the best examples of the theme of the fic, or something else altogether?

- Your use of language always, always kills me. How much of that is a deliberate process? Do you sit there and intentionally try to make it so poetic? Do you ever worry about the line between lyrical writing and purple prose? Would you say you'd ever crossed that line? (I wouldn't, just so it's clear this isn't a loaded question.)

- What is it that pings your interest and makes you decide that this is something you can write about? Is it whether you can relate to the characters, or do certain characteristics always catch your attention whatever the fandom, or is it the relationships between characters that catch your interest? (I'd assume it varies.)

...Sorry, this probably wasn't intended as an invitation for a freaking interview. I'm just so curious about how you do it all.

Those are awesome questions and they make take me a while. But! I'll get to them.
