not really a quandary

After years of sadly abandoning Yuletide because of exams, I now find myself in the position of having only a single exam in November and most of December free, and I CANNOT THINK OF WHAT I WOULD OFFER TO WRITE. This is terrible.

Help me, flist. Yell out names of small fandoms that we have in common! Tell me what I want to write, or failing that, what YOU want me to write.

(I was even briefly considering NaNo, but instead I might aim for the goal of FINISHING SOME FANFICS. There are a lot of half-written stories lying around that just need some concentrated effort.)

I don't even know if we HAVE small fandoms in common anymore, but if you want to watch some truly awful made-in-Canada sci-fi, I think you might enjoy Warehouse 13.(You have to ignore the pilot though, it's awful.) Myka Bering is a total overachieving dork with an impressive collection of gay outfits! Her family owns a bookstore and she has daddy issues!

I have heard of it! But acquiring new TV is impossible because my internet is provided by the uni and it's monitored to make sure no large files are downloaded. And it tends to cut off at random, making streaming difficult.

I would run into SERIOUS canon-fact-checking problems, seriously, I would end up writing endless streams of dialogue to cover up how much I had forgotten about the plot.

[identity profile] sour-idealist.livejournal.com 2010-10-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yuletide? Is this a competition of some sort, or do you just write things for the holiday?
But, as I am always ready to jump at the possibility of good writers writing things, uhm... how small is small, I wonder? Is Bookverse!Narnaia a possibility? Or an Ouran/Avatar crossover of some kind, although I believe those qualify as large fandoms. Or, uhm, *flails* whatever you want to write, I guess? (Unless you know the Attolia books, by some chance).

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2010-10-17 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's a huge fic exchange festival run every year, and 'how small is small' is always something of a matter for debate. Narnia is always small enough to count, as far as I know!

I LOVE the Attolia books but it's been a while since I read them and I don't own them, so I think I've forgotten a bit too much of the plot.

Is Doctor Who a small fandom? In the US it is, but I don't know about elsewhere.

If so, an Eleven + Amy friendship fic would be lovely!

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2010-10-17 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I think Who is a bit big for Yuletide. And I haven't actually watched Eleven's season, so I wouldn't be much good anyway!

TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG. I don't count my year complete until I have wallowed in some ridiculous, charming Connie Willis Yuletide fic.

Also World War Z. Have you read WWZ? If not, WHY HAVEN'T YOU READ WWZ.

HMM. I could offer it (I would love writing it!) but I wouldn't be able to start writing until I got back to Canberra and frantically reread the book, which would be early-December. We'll see how I feel about that D:

Ummmm because nobody has ever told me to? I have just ordered Mira Grant's Feed from bookdepository, so that is my zombie quota filled for the forseeable future.

I can't think of any small fandoms we have lately... *tilts head*

But re: NaNo, you know you can do fanfiction, right? You can even do lots of smaller things that add up to 50K. Although I think there might be some restrictions on things that have already been substantially started, but even that I might just be thinking of Big Bangs.

As for Yuletide, why don't you try writing a list of everything you've read/watched/etc as far back as you've still got interest in it, and then go through process of elimination on what you think you could write + what's small enough as a fandom? (Or you could go down the yuletide fandoms like a checklist, once they've been decided.)

I finish my thesis on November 1 and my exams on November 8. I AM DETERMINED TO UPDATE BOYBAND!X BY CHRISTMAS. Every so often I get a review sadly asking if I've given up on it. orz

I thought about trying to do 50,000 words of fanfiction, but I DO have an exam in November and I'd rather not be giving myself extra deadlines, especially if I'm doing Yuletide.

I will probably go down the final list searching for inspiration, like I normally do! I will definitely offer the BBC Sherlock, I think, and Chess, if they keep that on the list.
