Chancellor's Bookfair

YES. It is that time of year again, the time when the booklovers of Sydney gird their loins and grimly descend upon USyd's Great Hall clutching calico totes and green shopping bags.

I got in and out in an hour as soon as the fair opened, and I plan to return on Tuesday or Wednesday when they will be begging you to take home enormous boxes of books for $5 each.

THE HAUL

Michael Cunningham, The Hours
Mark Gatiss, The Vesuvius Club
William Gibson, Virtual Light
Ellen Kushner, The Privilege of the Sword
Robin McKinley, Beauty
Ben Okri, The Famished Road
Jonathan Safran Foer, Everything is Illuminated
Minette Walters, The Ice House

Total cost: $18! Which is especially impressive if you know how much a new paperback costs in Australia, ie. around $24.

Sadly the things I was looking for, namely any of the Lord Peter Wimsey books currently missing from my collection, were nowhere to be found :( The only Sayers I saw was a copy of Clouds of Witness, which I already own.

$*&^*IJ! I can't believe I'm missing the bookfair. I actually donated about 4 boxes of books this year.

The Ice House and The Scold's Bridle have some really amazing (flawed, complicated, courageous) characters.

I've never read any Walters before but [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales recommended The Ice House and hey, $2, why not?

I'll be going back in a few days, anything in particular you'd like me to keep an eye out for & nab for you?

I've been looking for a while now for an inexpensive copy of Godel, Escher, Bach. If you're browsing through the science section and happen to see it, that'd be fab!

Um, can I be nosy and ask which of the Lord Peter Wimsey books you're still looking for? They do pop up on BookMooch on occasion; condition of the books on there vary wildly, but ... would be happy to keep an eye out for you?
