Dear Inception fandom,

Here are some things that can be put into a human vein:

- cannulae

Trocar needles are used as insertion vehicles for cannulae, yes, and then they are immediately removed and put into a sharps bin or something.

Here are some thing that DO NOT REMAIN IN A VEIN:

- needles, Jesus Christ (do you want all your characters to wake up with massive haematomas?? NO YOU DON'T)
- SYRINGES

Repeat after me, fandom: you do not slide a syringe into your vein. Or anyone else's vein. The anatomical logistics of that are completely fucking baffling.

Okay then.

I'm glad we've sorted that out.

Dr. Fahye to the rescue! You're safe now, poor mistreated characters :(

God, do not get me started, I will end up writing the fic where Yusuf gives everyone an earnest tutorial on self-cannulation. Including washing your hands, and tourniquet use, and using sterile packs, and swabbing with alcohol, and flushing with saline first to make sure the infusion isn't tissuing.

IT IS A WONDER THEY ALL HAVEN'T DIED OF SEPSIS I TELL YOU.

OH GOD PLEASE DO.
That or a Public Service Announcement that basically consists of "Thes are the sorts of things you stick in your arms, these are the sorts of things you don't".
And if that has turned into some cracked-out Doctor Seuss "red fish, blue fish, THINGS THAT GO INTO VEINS, THINGS THAT DON'T", well, I don't think I can be blamed.

I would read this.
I mean, seriously. That sounds really interesting.

I mean, the official PASIV specs have no syringes at all, just direct infusion lines connected to 'IV cannulas with self-retracting needles' which sounds like complete bullshit, but I suppose I will give them the benefit of the doubt. Even so. One does not wake up and slide out a needle! Because the needle! was! not! in there!

Plus, the PASIV instructions are medically terrifying, for all that they deign to specify the importance of washing one's hands and swabbing with alcohol. 'Insert the injection needles into the wrist'.

The wrist?

THE -- WRIST??

If it's an *IV* line then it isn't a *subcutaneous* cannula (which is what the picture & instruction seem to be implying) and if it was, the wrist is the last fucking place you would be putting it.

shut up

these things are important

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT FACT TO KNOW. Not that I had anyone injecting anything in any of my fics. Bonus of my canons: they're either using conveniently handwavey hyposprays, or leeches and mysterious poultices.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
*does the happy dance of not having done this* I used the PASIV specs for reference so that any fuck-up is the part of the specs-maker and not meeee. :)

My fic just hit 9000 words and I had to revise my estimate for its completed length. 15,000? Maybe? FUCK YOU ARTHUR. I still have entire sections that are still just notes like 'new chairs!' or 'second layer of garden'.

Man this is going to be the fic that DEFINES THE FANDOM. <3
ext_21673: ([lots] this is a very important job)

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, no, this is going to be the fic that the fandom gets halfway through and is like WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON, WHERE IS THE PLOT, IT CANNOT BE 15,000 WORDS OF NO PLOT.

Except it can.

Muahahahaha.

(Best fic in the fandom so far? This one. (http://mirabellafic.dreamwidth.org/2387.html))

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Awk. I have tried to read that one but it bends the accepted rules of canon without explanation and I just end up with weird cognitive dissonance because the writing is incredible. :(

I suspect an insulin syringe could make it into a chunky femoral vein if passed down a vascath by a good strong arm...

*SHRIEKS* OUCH DEAR GOD

[identity profile] dr-biscuit.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I'm not *sure*
I have however seen the X-Rays of cases where guidewires have made their way into the right ventricle and pulmonary artery under the effects of negative intrathoracic pressure (eg shocked patient breathing in) and a careless operator inserting a jugular line). That's a difficult one to explain to the coroner :D

LOLOLOL.

I have the same feeling of ARGH with Holmes fic where Holmes injects cocaine or morphine into his vein WITH NO TOURNIQUET. OR HE JUST JABS IT ~SOMEWHERE~ INTO HIS UPPER ARM. *sob*

lol GUILTY. it's some thing that pokes and then you bleed! idk!

Though now that I've looked at the wiki page for IVs, I am retroactively fucking terrified. Jesus. Tiny shallow veins ftw.

Oh, now this is the kind of education that fandom needs. Please go forth and tell us more things about how hospital tropes are illogical, please?
