Inception! I have seen it! And honestly I don't really care about ~theories~ and reconceptualisations and all that -- it made sense to me, I enjoyed the fact that every opened parenthesis was closed eventually, and I don't have the energy for further mental gymnastics right now. Mostly I want to think about HOW AWESOME THE ENTIRE CAST WAS.

One minor question for those who've seen it: does anyone recall being shown what Eames's totem was? They all seemed to revolve (heh) around weight -- one assumes that Arthur's loaded die lands on a number known only to him, Cobb's top only succumbs to real gravity, and we saw Ariadne learning the weight of her chess piece and how much force is needed to topple it over -- but I don't remember seeing anyone else's totems.

What do you mean I might be writing fic about Forgers.

Shut up.

([livejournal.com profile] dopplegl is right, there's an excellent White Collar crossover in there somewhere, but I don't think it's quite what I want to write.)

No, I don't think we saw Eames' totem. I remember thinking that it should be some kind of poker chip, though.

And yes. You OUGHT to be writing fic about Forgers.

Ooohh, a pen. I like that.

I feel like a lot of people have latched onto the idea of his totem being a poker chip though I still don't know if that's just fanon/speculation.

but yay for Forger fic :D

Yeah, some googling has led me to that conclusion... it seems like most people agree on poker chip, but as it was never actually named in the film, you could still make a case for anything else you wanted.

I've come up with a reason why I WANT it to be a poker chip, now, so if I write anything I'll use that.

I enjoyed that movie so much. I heard almost nothing about it beforehand, but the vague things I had picked up on had me worried that it was going to be one of those movies that just gets so confusing you have no idea what the f happened by the end of it - but much to my pleasant surprise it was very clear and easy (well, relatively) to follow! It was so exciting, I was pretty much gaping at the screen like "8D" the entire time.

...but I had not realized until just now that Inception needs to be crossed over with everything.

I read an excellent fic where Eames token was coloured squares representative of Eames' House, but I know a lot of fandom uses the poker chip given that he's playing with one when we first "meet" him, and Cobb glances at it and says "you still haven't learned how to spell". Some fics make it weighted, and he flips it, but I don't think the weight is the key to the totem, just one aspect that would be hard to replicate accurately in a dream.

I do think the flipping of a poker chip is the most likely. Have you read any good Eames-centric fic you'd recommend to me?

Eames mostly appears in Arthur/Eames fic, and that's not really my pairing or focus, but I'll try! So far my favourite fics with Eames have been: too much like the world we're stuck in (Arthur/Eames in limbo) and save lay my rifle down (Arthur/Eames with RL heists).

You Can't Hide The Sun With Two Fingers (Arthur/Eames, pre- and post- movie) and All The Faces You Wear (same) are pretty popular too.

This untitled kinkmeme piece is the one with the Eames House totem.

Oh and EVERYONE EVER should read the Eames/Arthur/Ariadne Victorian!AU, my slumbering heart.

Even though my love for the film was due in large part to the characters...I can't imagine writing AU for it when there is so much AWESOME MINDFUCK WORLDBUILDING to be done!

That was my thought exactly, and my issue with a lot of other fic being produced in this fandom! Possibly it's just that I have a giant girlboner for anything set in the 19th century, but they still use PASIV and enter dreams it's just, you know. Victorian era. ♥____♥

Eames totem was a poker chip.

When do we actually learn that? Is anything else said about it?

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2010-07-31 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
Supplementary material. It may have been on the comic on the website, I am not wholly sure as information is from ma seestah. There is - unrelatedly - a good theory if you google about how Cobb's actual totem is his wedding ring.

Yeah, I saw that theory, it's a good one!

Have you heard the music comparison as well?

[NB: I am probably going to start work on my Inception fan-track this week, because fic is beyond me but the STRUCTURE gives me a boner]

I haven't, no, was there something going on with a reality/non-reality difference?

This fic is kicking my ass. So far I have been forced to invent the field of psycho-oneirology from scratch and also define the technical rules governing forgery of individual identity.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2010-07-31 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
All the music - including the main theme - is drawn from "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien." All of it. I am very excited by this.

That's pretty much how I feel, too. I feel like if I go see it again or start reading theories I might get into it, but right now I'm just like LET'S TALK ABOUT HOW GREAT THE TEAM IS AND THE VARIOUS WAYS I SHIP THEM.

[identity profile] girl-wonder.livejournal.com 2010-07-31 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! I totally loved the movie as well. It had the aesthetic and ideas that made me literally clap my hands.

AND YES. Forgers are way way interesting - the idea of it, the idea of what you do outside (forge real things) can come inside with you but change into something deeper (forge yourself).
