meme: Best Of

The eternal question arises: to finish my Clinical Services assignment and study for my dermatology test, or to do another meme about my own writing?

Gee, difficult.

Post, in your journal, a rec list singling out the best of your own fics. Tell people why you are especially proud of those particular fics, and of course provide links to them. Yes, that's right, this step involves self-promotion. How else are people supposed to find your fics? List as many or as few as you feel appropriate to represent your body of writing.

Also include a paragraph about the types of fics you most enjoy reading or are most interested in reading in the immediate future -- favorite tropes, pairings, fandoms, whatever. If you're particularly lazy, link to that Dear Writer post you did for whatever holiday exchange comes to mind.

Reply to other rec posts (like for example the one you are reading now) by reccing a fic of your own that might fit the original poster's tastes, or that you'd just really like them to read, because maybe they don't know they'd like it.

(gacked from Aria)

I tried to stop at thirteen, but it grew. I also tried not to double up when it comes to fandoms, but I failed, because Doctor Who is evil like that.

Amateur -- BSG, Lee/Kara but Anders-centric. It is SO HARD for me to pick one BSG fic that I am particularly proud of (Benevolent Sibling! Eleusis! the cylon!pilots AU! aaauughghgh), because the time I spent in BSG fandom was the most prolific, and one of the most enjoyable, times in my fannish life. But I really think this one is something that I can look back on and say, here, this is how I learned to take time when telling a story, this is how much I love third-person perspectives on my pairings, and how much I love fleshing out under-developed characters. It's been utterly Jossed, obviously, but I am still very fond of it.

Crying Call -- Firefly/Good Omens/Sandman (and a sprinkling of other fandoms). The Milliways-inspired Big Damn Crossover! At the time of writing -- five years ago, Jesus H. Christ -- I was simply amazed that the plot came together in the end (I was, in essence, making it all up as I went along). It is pure HIJINKS from start to finish. It is the kind of story I love reading but seldom manage to write. And it's the only time I've managed to get [livejournal.com profile] samael_diablo into a fanfic that is fit for consumption by people unfamiliar with Milliways.

Twelve Pater Nosters -- Hard Core Logo, Bruce & Billy, gen. Writing this was a strange experience and I can still reread it and find phrases which are not very me but which work, somehow, in the context of the fic. It's about artistic integrity, and the storyteller instinct, and Billy Tallent, and fear. It's got a lot to do with fear.

Healer -- Harry Potter, Padma Patil. I am basically incapable of writing happy stories about the Potterverse. I think there's so much potential there for darkness and for exploration of that darkness, and somehow my brain seizes onto that instead of delightful things like Every Flavour Beans. Anyway, I wrote this as a pretense at studying for an anatomy course, and as part of my Muggle Studies worldbuilding challenge, and I think it came out very well. The line between magic and science is a difficult one.

Anchored in Dust -- Natuto, Naruto/Sasuke. Choosing a favourite Naruto fic comes down to a three-way war between this story, Triage, and Solfege, but I think in the end I'm proudest of this one, because parts of it were very difficult to write but it came out looking smooth. It's a story about stories, about owning your history, about narrative as self-discovery. And it's about deserts. And it's about Sasuke.

daddy's gonna buy you a looking glass -- Ouran High School Host Club, OT5. I wrote this sort of as a joke with myself about my love for multi-person relationships, and it surprised the hell out of me by becoming one of my favourite fics ever. I just love writing these characters, all of them, their quirks and their affection for one another and the way they defy any sort of mundane reality.

turn your sail (never say we die) -- Pirates of the Caribbean, Will/Elizabeth. SHAMELESS FIX-EVERYTHING FIC. I came out of the theatre with an idea in my head and somehow, somehow, I managed to write it without sacrificing one jot of that initial motivation and emotion. It's more blatantly a romance than a lot of my other stories, and I like that about it.

No More To Leave It -- SGA, Weir & Sheppard & Atlantis. It is ridiculous how proud I am of this story. It was doomed to never be popular (it's HET, and it's DEPRESSING) but I put a lot of effort into the writing of it and to me, it's wonderful. Nyah nyah nyah. Writing inanimate things as sentient beings is also a favourite of mine, and I loved doing it here.

Paramagnetic -- Torchwood, Jack & Suzie. This was the year Torchwood snuck into Yuletide because the fandom was still small enough (yeah, remember those days?) and it was my first ever Yuletide experience. Writing it was nerve-wracking for that reason, but also fun, because I made up my mind to merrily invent background for everyone and to flesh out Suzie, and after about four aborted beginnings (rare, for me) this finally took shape.

No Sleepers Must Sleep -- Doctor Who, Lucy Saxon. I LOVE the way this story came out. It said exactly what I wanted to say about Lucy and the Master, and it kept the rhythm and the creepiness of those episodes intact, and I still reread it and smile. It stands nicely on its own, but I'm still pleased I was poked into writing the sequel.

Uncertainty Principles -- Doctor Who, Doctor/Master. Of the three science-fics, the one about physics is hands-down my favourite, possibly because I went to town on the wordcount in a way I hadn't let myself do during the bio and chem ones. And writing it was joyful; I'm never happier than when I'm mixing science and strong words and a complex relationship together into something good. All of the subheadings relate directly to the scenes below them and I do not care how geeky this makes me.

when our falsehoods are divided -- The History Boys, Dakin/Irwin. This story! This story was a fucking MIRACLE, I kid you not, I am still not quite sure how I managed it. But it's that rare beast: a story I loved when I posted it, and have never stopped loving. It's about change and second chances, and things that should remain impermanent. And history, of course.

to cover a bruise (the rainy days remix) -- Avatar, Mai/lots of people. Remixing [livejournal.com profile] rawles's fic was such amazing fun, especially when I got to use Azula (<333333) as a POV character. I'm proud of the dialogue and the images in this one, and the way it provides a sociopathic mirror to the extremely subtle and reserved original.

Quickening Days -- Merlin, Merlin/Arthur. Another miracle story. I have never written anything else with a plot as coherent as this one. It's a lot less crafted than some of my other things, but it was actually something of a relief to discover that I could write a good old adventure story without laborious metaphors getting in the way. Plus, now I am the person who wrote the Groundhog Day story for Merlin fandom, and every fandom needs one, right?

Biconvex -- White Collar, gen. I had a bit of hair-pulling indecision as to whether I am prouder of this or of Boundary Conditions, but the AU/worldbuilding aspects of this one tipped the balance. A lot of commenters asked what it was a crossover with, which I took as an enormous indication of success :D And these characters! They are amazing! I could write them being fond and bantery forever.

Hmm, as for fics I would like to be recced...I don't have a lot of time for reading these days, but I do have a little, so sure! I like OT3s of all flavours, I like beautifully-executed AUs (my absolute favourite fic of all time is Corridors of Power, which is half-AU and half-worldbuilding and altogether genius). I like hilarity and hijinks (perfect example: There's No I in Team). I like difficult love stories. I like huge, wild, original ideas (perfect example: OK Computer). I am not craving one pairing in particular but I don't tend to read in fandoms I don't know, unless, FOR EXAMPLE, Astolat maybe writes Regency AU American Idol RPF and I maybe read it anyway and then end up helplessly rereading it a dozen times.

Twelve Pater Nosters, No Sleepers Must Sleep

Very glad to see you recognise how damn good these are as they're not just some of *your* best fics but some of the best fics I've read, full stop.

:))) Thank you.

I came very close to listing your Knight's Tale story as the perfect hijinks & hilarity example, no lie.

Bwahaa, it still amuses me no end that the on-site recs for that fic were like "THIS CONCEPT IS KIND OF OUT OF LEFT FIELD" and everyone else was all "NOT IF YOU KNOW THE AUTHOR". What I don't default to Guy-Ritchie-esque crime farce shut up. >.>

Haaa, it's true, if I had just stumbled upon it in the archive I would have been like WHAT THE HELL IS THIS CRAZY AWESOMENESS? But as it was, I was just like, oh look, Del is being Del and Paul Bettany is involved! Excellent!

So many I haven't read!! :O I can't wait to check out your HP fics, I can't believe I haven't until now.

I have to say that "Quickening Days" is the single most entertaining fanfic I have ever read, in any fandom. I must have re-read it at least four times. Plus, it was the first story of yours I ever found! ♥

Oh, this is like a little tour down memory lane! (I also have to sidenote that I find it hilarious that "No More to Leave It" was totally my gateway into SGA fandom. It's continued to color a lot of what I think and feel about it in my own personal canon, even though it is outside of the typical SGA story.)
