marking the date
This isn't really an ANZAC Day post. What it is is an opportunity for me to embarrass
schiarire by talking about her in public. HURRAH. (Today is actually the five year anniversary-thing of Thom & Lucifer, who at least have a highly memorable (for Australians) date. And because our own anniversary of interaction is lost somewhere in the aether, it'll do.)
ONCE UPON A TIME, I was involved in a Discworld RPG, and somehow got to talking with the girl on the other side of the world whose Tomjon interacted with my Chidder sometimes. And then when Milliways started, we were both there too. And then we kept on talking about Shakespeare, and how high school sucked sometimes no matter the continent, and how her taste in music is -- was? okay, still is -- much cooler than mine, and then our characters became deeply involved in the Glorious Milliways Ethereal Clusterfuck and now my gmail account has 2163 threads with the label 'Friends: Ji' and I have absolutely no idea how I existed without her.
There are a very few people in my life who I've woven into the forseeable and unforseeable future years of said life; I've got my finger on their pulse and I'm not lifting it up, not for anything, not ever. Ji is one and she might even have been the first. We've only met in person twice -- both times were too brief, and both times involved a staggering amount of food -- and it'll probably be a ludicrous number of years before we manage it again, but in the meantime I am sending her equally ludicrous amounts of emails and waiting for both of us to escape from the savage claws of our crazy lives; there's time. Like I said, I'm not letting her slip away. (She knows too many of my secrets for that!)
If I were trying to sell her to you like a set of encyclopaedias, I would mention the fact that she's ridiculously clever and insightful and writes twice as well as I do, and has amazing art skills and a great webcomic, and is also funny and loyal and moral and strong and unselfish. She makes me want to be broader thinker and a better human being. She is also, incidentally, as interesting as a set of encyclopaedias.
Anyway. Here's to you, Cosmas :) I couldn't design a better best friend if I had a year to work, an unlimited budget, and a blueprint the size of a house. Actually, that is a lie, the first thing I would scribble at the top of the design sheet would be LOCATION: SAME BLOODY CONTINENT WOULD BE NICE.
I was going to have eyaific for you to mark the occasion but that obviously didn't work out as planned. You can take comfort in the fact that it is currently >5000 words long and still growing, so there'll be a lot of it when it appears.
Love always,
Damian
