some cool things

1) [livejournal.com profile] elsewhere_kels has recorded Quickening Days as a podbook, complete with cover! I haven't listened to all of it yet, but it's exciting to hear my own story in this form, and she reads very well.

2) I don't know if 'cool' is quite the right word for it, but this is one of the best and clearest pieces of writing on rape that I've seen in a long time. (Linked by Tris on GR.)

3) I have ordered the Toronto Notes. STUDYING WILL OCCUR.

4) I am watching Band of Brothers for the first time ever. I keep having to turn the volume down so that my roommate is not startled by explosions.

I've read that article before - it's excellent. Depressingly honest and true, and excellent. I also needed to reread it (I don't have to be nice, I am allowed to have boundaries, I am), so thank you for linking!

I have ordered the Toronto Notes.

I HAVE THOSE. I sort of cannot believe I'm supposed to know that entire book in two and a bit years.

dsKDhjaskj don't even say it, I have been talked at ALL DAY about how much I have to know for my exams and how many billions of assignments there will be and basically, BASICALLY, I am doomed. The Notes will be the pillow to which I cling as I tumble into said doom.

[identity profile] pirateygoodness.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I am comforting myself by looking back. Like, I know how much I understood about the human body before I started, and it was not much, and now I cannot believe I didn't know that stuff. (However, I am also looking at the 8 weeks of internal we have to do next year and going THANKS BUT NO THANKS, TOO HARD. So.)

My 8 weeks of internal start NEXT WEEK. Four of neuro, four of resp.

[identity profile] pirateygoodness.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhh, see those are my strong points, so that sounds not so bad. And neuro will, at least, be lots of outpatient, right?

Personally, I live in eternal fear of being asked to have an in-depth understanding of cardiology.

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
They are my strong points also (well, neuro is) which is a relief. And actually I think neuro has a lot of inpatient at my hospital; it's a huge quaternary referral hospital so we get lots of tricky stuff.

ME TOO. I am doing cardio as my very last term ever, which is good in that I will go into internship knowing stuff, but bad in that I won't have the knowledge for my Long Case exam.

[identity profile] pirateygoodness.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohh, that's awesome, then! We get to start picking our rotations soon - it seems like such a big decision, but really it's just the illusion of control, since we have to do everything anyway.

IT IS SO HARD. EVERYTHING IS A CIRCLE. ECGs ARE MADE OF PHYSICS. It's just one of those things that I understand when I'm reading it, and then forget the second the book closes. I don't even know.

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, our rotations are just The Things We Will Know Better Than Everything Else, seeing as how we'll be examined on our self-taught ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING.

I don't think it's HARD, I just think it's BORING, so I also tend to forget it as soon as the book closes. Just can't summon the energy to care about it.

[identity profile] pirateygoodness.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
We have, like, a series of mandatory core ones, and then 12 weeks to fill with whatever our hearts desire (as long as it spans three different residency entry points).

That is actually my feeling on onc, but I feel bad even saying that because like, IT'S IMPORTANT, but all the cells and genes make me sleepy.

The only mandatory internal med block we have is Geriatrics. Blah.

I think we have exactly the same preferences when it comes to specialties! UGH. ONC.

[identity profile] pirateygoodness.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww. Yeah, we just have a big blocked labeled Internal, and whatever we get, we get.

Possibly! I don't really want to specialize, though, I'm a slacker primary care type at heart.

I love BoB so, so much. It's one of my favorite things ever. I'll be interested to hear your reactions to it. (Although I've found that it usually takes more than one rewatch to get everything in it, and to get all the characters straight.)

Yeah, I've unfortunately been doing some other things while watching, so occasionally I will tune back in and something important will have been said and I'll have MISSED IT. Also, I am suffering what my friend calls helmet-induced prosopagnosia, which is where a group of young white men put helmets on and suddenly you cannot! tell! them! apart!

The half-Cajun medic is my favourite though <3 EUGENE.

I too am watching Band of Brothers for the first time ever! I just finished the fourth episode and am starting to have a vague idea who some of the characters are! It's awesome!

I am amused at the sheer number of British actors I recognise. What with everyone speaking in American accents. Well, Jamie Bamber just showed up and at least I am USED to him having an American accent.

I was so confused when James McAvoy showed up. "That's not . . . really? No, Becca, you are probably just going crazy!" But I was not!

I know! And the credits told me that Dominic Cooper was in an early episode, but I have NO IDEA WHERE.

I am trying to get used to spotting individuals in a FIELD OF SOLDIERS because my friend's brother has a small role in The Pacific and when it comes out, I plan to be able to jab my finger instantly at the screen and scream THERE THERE THERE.

3) I thought for a second that this was a guide to the city of toronto, meaning that you were planning on visiting it. the reality was somewhat less exciting.
