picspam: Joseph & the Technicolour Dreamcoat

I warned you! It's holidays, there will be picspams. This production of Joseph, like the JC Superstar I picspammed a while back, is a 'stage' version which was basically made to be filmed.

This musical, if you are unfamiliar with it, is crack. PURE CRACK. Andrew Lloyd Webber basically used it as an excuse to use a different style of music for each item, and it's extraordinarily cheesy and bright and fun and dizzying.

Also, homoerotic.

The conceit of the filmed version is that it's a concert being put on at a primary school. All the stars of the show appear briefly as teachers, and the audience sometimes becomes involved in the show. Joseph is one of the few musicals to require a large horde of adorable kiddies.

Photobucket

Donny Osmond, probably the most famous Joseph.

I love the part of the Narrator; if I could sing any part in any musical, this one would probably top my list. And Maria Friedman has such wonderful energy and expression and it just looks like the best fun in the world. Plus, her outfit is weirdly charming.

Did I mention...the colour? And the dancing? And -- okay, I was going to group these screencaps into categories like 'dance!' and 'gorgeous costumes!' and 'THE NARRATOR <333' and 'other characters molest Joseph' (an alarmingly large category) but I think I'll just throw images at you and you can enjoy the rainbow onslaught.

See, I wasn't kidding about the molestation.

And then there's the fact that Joseph spends most of the musical wearing, er, very little. VERY little. Sometimes he gets sparkly accessories, but mostly it's Loincloth Central.

Oh yeah, and then there's the whole bit with the Pharoah where Joseph is in a loincloth and CHAINS and they stare at each other's chests a whole lot.

And you thought I was kidding about the homoeroticism.

Most of the sparkly accessories just make him look, um. A bit. Gay.

At this stage you have to remind yourself that most of the other characters in this musical are in fact his brothers. Not that it seems to stop them.

So. Are your eyeballs still intact? Are you weeping rainbows? WASN'T THAT FUN?

Now imagine it with music.

OMGGGGGGGGGGGG I AM STOPPING MY ENTIRE EVENING AGENDA AND WATCHING THIS MOVIE AGAIN. I wake up to Joseph every morning, it's my alarm clock!

[identity profile] indy-go.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I own this DVD. And I was in it. And I know every single word. I, too, dream of playing the Narrator. IT WILLLLLL BE MIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE! In conclusion: yes! :D

I THINK THIS MAY BE THE SINGLE GAYEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN.

My eyes. I think I just spontaneously disco-balled.

*ENVY*

Well, let's be frank, the Narrator's part is within my range but it requires a lot more strength of voice than I will ever possess. Just like...most roles in musicals that I'd like to play.

Actually, I would be perfectly content to be a dancing chorus member in ANYTHING, but that would require substantial amounts of Free Time.

I LOVE THIS MUSICAL SO VERY VERY HARD.

I WOULD DIE TO PLAY THE NARRATOR. GAAAAAAAWD.

I saw a local production once where they sensibly divided the Narrator's part into three (because really, if you have >1 good female soloist, Joseph The Musical Of Hundreds Of Men is a bit of a waste) and they dressed up as angels.

*snorts*

I have seen/been in Joseph WAY TOO MANY TIMES. Also, I was a quarter narrator? I started the show off, anyway, and sang OBSCENELY high on the prisony bit. Veeeeery small production, obviously. XD

[identity profile] -leareth.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
There was an awesome local production of this back in Perth a few years ago by an extremely good youth theatre company. They did the Narrator as The Doctor, complete with scarf and TARDIS.

This is the part where I say: I got to play the Narrator!

... they stripped it of music and split the part between me and three other people who can't sing either. But still. The lines were pretty awesome, even without singing.

Whoa.. Joseph songs always end up as earworms because we learnt them at school and then my best friend at uni was a huge fan and played the music non-stop, and I just don't much like but after these photos? Phwoar. And Donny Osmond? Is seriously hot. I thought he was old and washed up or still a sad skinny teeny type *gets distracted by muscley loincloth pics* Oh my.

[identity profile] indy-go.livejournal.com 2009-12-14 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't really have that kind of Free Time anymore, either -- this is when I was in high school and performing in a university summer stock production. I will say that being a wife/Pharoh-ette was super, super fun. :D

I was going to be like "I love Joseph but I think I have never seen this film production -"

AND THEN I GOT TO THE BIT WITH THE POTIPHARS MOLESTING JOSEPH AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I REMEMBERED. OH MY CHILDHOOD!!!!

I think I blanked out all the loincloths

I LOVE THAT MOVIE SO GODDAMN MUCH. Everyone in it is clearly having so much fun!

Also, I am friending you, if that's okay! I keep stalking you via Aria, and I think it would be much more sensible for me to just friend you. :D

And sure, that's totally okay :)

Because I have never been able to find it anywhere! Ever! And I am too poor for ordering off Amazon or similar, where it might potentially exist.

;_; Tempting as that is, there's also the fact that despite many attempts at things that people have assured me will work, I cannot play foreign-coded DVDs on my computer, and I do not have access to a proper non-coded DVD player for ten months of the year.

This "Agony" icon has never been more appropriate. :(

(Many songs are up on youtube at least?)
