This took a seriously stupid amount of time, and I had to abandon the idea of providing illustrative pictures for every answer. Dear self, stop posting memes and then running away and returning to an intimidating list; learn to tackle the questions one at a time as they appear.
I may have cheated slightly to avoid overlap and thus allow me to gush about more awesome fictional people. Win-win, right?
TOP FIVE BOYFRIENDS for
sainfoin_fields
This is hilarious because most of the male characters I love best are TERRIBLE at being boyfriends. Or else they might make good boyfriends but have not yet been given the chance to prove it.
5) Ron Weasley (HP). Sure, he has some moments of adolescent FAIL, but who doesn't? I'm convinced he is going to be wonderful to Hermione; much, much more wonderful than Harry Potter, canonical romantic dimwit, will ever be to Ginny. SORRY, GINNY.
4) Will Turner (PotC). Talk about your lifelong unswerving devotion.
3) Jack Hodgins (Bones). He is everything a boyfriend should be and every time I expect him to pull something stupid and jealous like most fictional characters would, he turns around and is SENSIBLE about it. (Also, fluorescent shrimp.)
2) SOKKA (Avatar). He will be your boyfriend. He will be the WHOLE WORLD's boyfriend. Although of course in my heart of hearts I think he is destined to be Toph's boyfriend. (Srsly: for all his flailing and flirting, Sokka is honourable and awesome and respects the kickass ladiez.)
1) Marshall Erikson (How I Met Your Mother). I do not think boyfriends as good as him actually exist, or if they do, they all get snapped up before the age of 20, like Marshall was. But holy shit. He wins at boyfriending FOREVER.
TOP FIVE CHARACTERS TO WRITE ANGST ABOUT for
be_themoon
5) Jack Harkness (Torchwood). Admittedly I have only done it twice, but I enjoyed the hell out of the process both times. I think because Jack has such a resilient, determinedly amusing edge to him; or at least the Jack I like to write does. I haven't watched Torchwood since mid-S2 and from all accounts it went way too dark for my tastes in ridiculous escapism (I do not watch TV to be depressed), so probably the current-canonical brand of Jack angst is DEPTHS OF DESPAAAAAIR.
4) Agatha Verey (eyaiverse). This might not count at ALL because I haven't actually written her story yet, but it's in my head, and my god, it's going to be awesome.
3) Prince Caspian (Narnia). I loved writing his POV: he angsts so prettily! And about such interesting things!
2) Draco Malfoy (HP), hello. I feel like I've just started poking around in a gold mine that everyone else has known about for years. One of my current secret-ish WIPs is turning into a celebration of how much I enjoy playing with his character.
1) Uchiha Sasuke. The angst writes itself! All I have to do is pour it into whatever shape I desire. It took me a while to get a proper handle on him, but I think that's made me appreciate his character more.
My OTPs haven't really changed a whole lot since I did the seven OTPs meme a year ago, so instead I have decided to do…
TOP FIVE PAIRINGS I HAVEN'T REALLY TALKED ABOUT for
unravels
5) Shikamaru/Temari (Naruto). I have absolutely no idea why I like this pairing so much except that … I do. As soon as they started hanging out in canon I latched onto them, and started writing them into things, and now I have this whole elaborate future plan (alluded to in Anchored in Dust) in which they are the intelligence directors for their Villages and have a relationship consisting of secrets and cryptic messages and threats of violence and extremely hot sex. I guess I love them because they're a bit like a genderswitched version of Mai/Zuko: one monotonic and undemonstrative, and one abrasive, and somehow that works for them. Hilariously this is one of my few pairings for which I have an ACTIVE DISLIKE of the popular alternaship (die, Shikamaru/Ino, DIE IN A FIRE).
4) Lucifer/Mazikeen (Lucifer). I still (still) cannot talk about Mike Carey's Lucifer with any sort of coherence, it affected me that much, but luckily I can refer you to
the_grynne's excellent post on Mazikeen as the Asian heroic archetype and why this pairing is amazing. Mazikeen is probably one of my favourite female characters of all time; see below.
3) Mai Linh/Dieter (eyaiverse). If you don't know who they are then I am going to SHUN YOU while you go and read Risk. I love them. I love their crazy give-and-take and the way their relationship fits into the revolution. (I might have put Dominic/Julian here except for the fact that like Agatha's angst, their relationship mostly exists inside my head at the moment; it needs to be prodded into a ficlet.)
2) Sokka/Toph (Avatar). I thought at one time that this might become canon, or canon-hinted-at, and it was only when it became clear that Sokka/Suki was going to stick around as a pairing (which I don't have many objections to, really, because Suki is great) that I realised the depth of my commitment to, um, Sparkle Motion. I think part of it is that I really, really want Toph to be happy, and you can SEE her blossoming little crush on Sokka that she hides with her scowls and her stomping around and her general overwhelming awesomeness. And I think they'd be great for each other, once they've both grown up a bit.
1) John/Aeryn (Farscape). I haven't talked about Farscape much and I think it's an incredibly polarising show, but I have come down hard on the HOLY SHIT THIS IS AMAZING side of the line. And I honestly believe this is one of the most honestly-written, impeccably-portrayed, smoking hot pairings ever shown on television. They're just so satisfying to watch, because each of their character journeys are inextricably tied to the other's. He's exuberant and stubborn and BATSHIT INSANE and she's rigid and strong and desperate and somehow, slowly, they teach each other to survive.
TOP FIVE FEMALE CHARACTERS for
fireflower314
(Note: Sakura would have been on this list if it weren't for the anime heroines question.)
5) Mazikeen of the Lilim (Lucifer). I have a tendency to like characters who portray fierce loyalty without losing a sense of agency/strength of individuality. And Mazikeen is amazing, for all the reasons mentioned in that post I linked to above, and because she is so marvellously internally consistent: she has a personal code and she sticks to it. No matter the relentless symmetry of her new face, she wants the old one back, because she knows who she is and who she serves and she won't compromise on that. On anything. She's a warrior who loves her lord with her whole heart. She's incredible.
4) Cristina Yang (Grey's Anatomy). I haven't watched Grey's for a long time, but when I did: I loved Cristina instantly and never stopped. I like that she's ambitious and unemotional and self-assured without ever being masculinised; she likes putting on a hot dress and blowing someone's socks off, but she doesn't need to do that in order to have confidence in her worth as a person. I like her friendships and her sarcasm and her fearless approach to life.
3) Azula (Avatar). I adore her character. A lot of what I wanted to say about her came through in the firebrat mix and to cover a bruise, but it's very rare that such a fantastically, accurately sociopathic villain comes along, and it's even rarer that the villain is female. And I get her -- I understand why she does what she does, and how her mental world is organised, and I love that her relationships and insecurities and skills are described with almost as much depth as those of the 'good' characters. She's multidimensional and ambitious and complex and wonderful.
2) Temperance Brennan (Bones). Watching S1 of Bones was a lovely experience for me because it was the first time I felt like hyperrationality was being presented in a sympathetic way, and I wanted to hug it to my chest. Watching Brennan grow over the course of the show has been deeply satisfying. I still identify with her a lot, and I care about her as a character, and I want her to be happy.
1) CJ Cregg (The West Wing). Yes! Damn that poll that made me choose between Brennan and CJ, but it made me realise that Claudia Jean Cregg is probably my favourite fictional character from just about anything. She has the best character journey imaginable. I want to be her. I want her smarts, her compassion, her brilliant whiplash snark, her humour, her grace, and her ability to handle anything the world throws at her. And maybe her goldfish too.
TOP FIVE MOMENTS IN WHICH MY FANDOMS MADE ME GO ASGDAJIPEHGPIAH for

5) The explosion at Babylon in QaF 5x10. GAH. It was one of those amazing episodes that manage to pull together every emotional storyline and SHAKE THEM AROUND and leave you breathless. QaF was good at those.
4) Every time John and Aeryn made out ever? Um. Okay, we'll go with the end of 'Season of Death', because gnnnn with his ENORMOUS HANDS and his WONDER and Aeryn finally, finally dropping her barriers and letting him see how much she loves him. If only for a minute.
3) Ty Lee pwning Azula. It just -- BAM, out of nowhere.
2) REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME THAT LEE KISSED KARA?

YEAH. YEEEEAH.
1) I do not even care that I have not written more than half a drabble for The West Wing, because the ultimate and unbeaten asgdajipehgpiah moment (okay, 'moment') for me is the very end of Two Cathedrals. The music. The walking-in-halls. The cleaner picking up the President's cigarette butt. The moment when all the threads of narrative and history come together and you realise, with Leo, what is about to happen. Say what you will about Aaron Sorkin, but nothing I have seen on any size screen has ever been able to beat that.
TOP 5 CHARACTERS THAT I INTELLECTUALLY CAN'T STAND BUT EMOTIONALLY ADORE for
bookelfe
My answers to this are going to be weak because I cannot adore someone without intellectually liking them at least a LITTLE bit, but let's see:
5) Owen Harper (Torchwood). There are layers here! Intellectually I like smart-mouthed doctor characters, but Owen seems like such an infuriating person. But I like him. But he's a terrible git. But I like him!
4) Chiana (Farscape). Her brattiness and some of her mannerisms grate on me and I can't really put my finger on any reason why I should like her. Maybe it's just the magic of Farscape, but I adore her anyway.
3) Aang (Avatar). Of all the characters in Avatar, Aang never really grabbed my interest per se -- there were too many other awesome characters around to play with and admire and think about! But I think it is physically impossible to come out the other end of that series and not love Aang with your whole heart.
2) Allison Cameron (House). Weird. So much about what Cameron is holds no interest for me whatsoever, but -- I love her anyway.
1) Kara Thrace (BSG). I do not think we would be friends. At all. I find many aspects of her character to be infuriating. And yet … STARBUCK <3
TOP FIVE ANIME HEROINES for
schiarire
5) Anjou Utena. Granted, I've only seen the movie and read the first few volumes of the manga, but Utena's general attitude to life (being a protector) has stuck with me.
4) Suzumiya Haruhi. She's such an interesting main character, powerful and controlling on many different levels but only aware of some of them. I like that she only knows one way of relating to people but she wants to learn others; that she finds quiet enjoyment in things and in people even though she's usually so loud.
3) Fujioka Haruhi. Oh man! Smart, unflappable, caring, doesn't really give a shit about gender roles. She's the perfect foil for the larger-than-life characters of Ouran.
2) Kishuu Arashi. She was probably the first and most important piece in the pattern of my love for sarcastic, unemotional, black-haired characters. I love that her romance doesn't define her but it does change her, that she accepts her role in the fight and then doesn't flinch from it.
1) Haruno Sakura. My love for her is IMMENSE; you can tell by how often I write about her. For a character that began as the worst kind of whiny, passive, obsessed-with-her-crush female stereotype, she became a true heroine. She's strong, she doesn't take crap, and she can turn a mountain to rubble. She cares about her friends and her team and she's a healer. She's balanced.
TOP FIVE FIC CLICHES (with bonus recs!) for
anr
5) Someone almost dies! Someone else realises that omg, they LOVE THEM and they CANNOT LOSE THEM! Sometimes there is crying. Sometimes it's terribly, terribly written. Sadly, I usually read it anyway.
4) TIME TRAVEL. Off the top of my head I recommend Past Imperfect and Creevey At Large, both of which do brilliant and fun things with this trope. Plus the latter has the best fic-Ginny in the world and will make you ship Blaise Zabini/Dennis Creevey LIKE BURNING which is a very impressive feat in itself.
3) Okay, I REALLY LOVE 'pretending to be a couple for a very contrived reason' fics. Shut up. And read Despoiled.
2) Fighting-turning-into-sex. Um. The absolute best example of this I've read is Freedom Hangs Like Heaven, but Currency has a great scene in it as well.
1) GRATUITOUS POWER SHIFTS. I am a twisted little monkey. But fics where the status quo gets shaken up and the power dynamics between characters change and grate and create new, amazing things -- these make me go weak at the knees. I think the best examples I can think of here are Transcendental and Reign Within.
TOP FIVE FICTIONAL SCIENTISTS for
genarti
(I decided to take this literally and not include doctors, which made it a lot harder and a lot more fun)
5) Tony Stark (Iron Man). The things I love best about Tony is his absolute JOY in the creative and scientific process, and how absorbed he can become in it. And his audacity.
4) Spock (Star Trek). Srsly <3 SPOOOOOCCK.
3) Dexter Morgan (Dexter). One of the most interesting characters on television, impressive considering the garbage of a book he was taken from. I am not sure if 'blood spatter analyst' fits entirely under the 'scientist' purview but I think considering the way his minds works, it's a very good label for him anyhow.
2) Camille Saroyan (Bones). Being a pathologist, she actually fits into the 'scientist' box in my head instead of the 'doctor' one. I love Cam! She's probably the most socially apt of all the squints, but she's still got her personal frustrations and insecurities. Basically she's the kind of person I'd like to grow up to become: working in an interesting job, overseeing talented people, living life at my own speed and on my own terms.
1) Tony Hill (Wire in the Blood). Look at that, another Tony! This one seems, at first glance, as unlike the first as he could possibly be. But he's got a similar kind of workaholic self-absorption, a similar tendency to forget the world outside and focus on what his mind can achieve. I love that we get glimpses into who he is, the way his personality is hung like clothing on his abilities, his sharpness and compassion and blurred boundaries. Dammit, I need to write Tony/Carol fic.
I may have cheated slightly to avoid overlap and thus allow me to gush about more awesome fictional people. Win-win, right?
