dreamwidth

I have an invite! But I still have no idea what I want to DO with it. I guess for now it could be a reading list for those of you who are uprooting entirely/using DW for something different to your LJ, but...I could use my OpenID for that. I could crosspost, but I am yet unconvinced of the value of having two separate & identical blogs in existence.

I have some interest in using it as a more formal medical school blog, discussing issues related to medical education, but I'd then want a bit more separation from my 'fahye' identity, which is largely a fandom one. So I would be writing under my own name or an entirely new pseudonym. And confusing my flist. And seeing as DW is set up to be fandom-friendly, using it for a new RL blog seems silly...

AS YOU CAN SEE, I am rather at a loss.

Help me, flist! What do you think I should do? What are you doing re: Dreamwidth? Is it working for you?

~

ETA: Right, I've set up as fahye @ Dreamwidth so you can go ahead and add me. I'll be working out exactly what I want to do with the journal...soon.

I'm crossposting and it's working out nicely. I'm using semagic so I haven't tried the DW crossposter yet... The plan is: dw are working on a gadget which talks to your LJ and imports your entire flist, locked entires and all. So I'll keep this psuedonym logged in to dw, and the other logged into LJ, and will thereby reduce the weird ACKACKWHOAMITODAY effect. :D I may eventually take both LJs over there, depending on how ticked off I get with LJ.

It's just that nobody I know well has ENTIRELY uprooted, most people are crossposting, so setting up a DW journal with the same identity seems completely pointless. I can read everyone (and they can read me) from here. I do LIKE Dreamwidth a lot, and I like the idea of separating out access/subscription because I've been thinking of going friends-only, but that setup wouldn't extend to LJ so it would be futile.

Bah. I might create a 'fahye' account over there now just so I have it, and if I want a new blog later on then I'll create it after April 30.

Yes, most people are crossposting now - and most of us intend to keep crossposting. I think it's a matter of where we're going to actually operate the blogs from...

The point when DW becomes "necessary" as such will be a) when the critical mass of people using DW as their primary platform is such that noobs start creating dw accounts instead of LJ or b) when the critical mass of fans using DW as their primary platform is such that a few new fandoms set up largely on DW... or c) when LJ bans teh slashfics.

Well, while they're fandom friendly, they are not fandom specific. In the DW comm advertising community, I've seen several non-fandom communities, so I think you can do whatever you like over there! When I get an invite, I'll be changing my name, too. People will adjust if you choose to do that.

Oh, I don't want to change my fandom name. I would be trying to create a separate online identity more closely linked to my real life. But if I told trusted fandom-people where it was, then the onus would be on them to not refer to me as 'fahye' when interacting with me there, which seems a bit unfair.

I'll fiddle around over the next few days and see what works :)

Hm. I see what you mean. You're right, I can't think of any way around that.

That is sort of exactly what I want to do, either with a new LJ or a new Dreamwidth or blog of some kind, but I feel the same way about being like DO NOT CALL ME BY MY SLAVE FANDOM NAME!

ooh lucky!! I want an invite XD

Hmm you could always join for a normal 'you' account and then add a fandom one later if need be.

I have no idea what to do about Dreamwidth myself. I'm just going to keep waiting and see what happens for now.
