MAC USERS: HELP

Elliot the iMac has arrived, and she is sitting in her box because I am too busy right now to set her up. HOWEVER. I need some advice on transferring all my shit from Fabian (IBM laptop) to Elliot. I think I'll probably just use an external hard drive for moving all of my files, and then re-download (*winces*) all the software I want.

I have two questions!

1) What is the best way to export/import an entire iTunes library database?

I'm thinking about consolidating my library into a single folder and then just using that, but I'm not sure if that saves the STRUCTURE of the library as well as the files (also: it would require a huge headachey reshuffling of everything because I don't HAVE the spare 30+ gigs needed to back up the library on either my hard drive or external drive). What I need is a way to save the playlists as a file such that I can import them all onto the Mac, preferably one that does not require me to save every single list individually, because I have over seventy playlists.

I have a feeling I am going to need to move all the music onto a different external drive, too, which will probably kill ALL HOPE of saving the library structure because the file pathnames will be all buggered up, but perhaps there is a way?? SOMEONE ON THE INTERNET WILL KNOW.

2) What free software is available for Macs that I need?

I'll need to grab VLC again, obviously, and then I'll need things to zip and unzip .rar files and things to edit music and anything else you have that you would like to pimp at me!

Perhaps you WERE NOT READY FOR IT PRIOR TO THIS DAY? (I...don't know? :D It's not like I'm hush-hush about it or anything.)

I think I had seen references but somehow I thought eyai was a reference to the Thom/Tom universe and I managed to not actually read any of the real eyai fics through... great trickery?

But ANYWAY, I have read everything fryadvocate linked to now and I AM MADLY IN LOVE WITH YOUR BRAINS. SO MUCH SO.

I am writing a new one! Well, I am writing it...sort of at the same time as I am writing a History Boys fic and a Merlin AU...and in the middle of crazy med school stress. BUT IT IS BEING WRITTEN. TECHNICALLY. And I have an idea for another tucked away.

Ji said I should write one because it would make her happy like a bird with a french fry, which is a really awesome argument but I am WILDLY INTIMIDATED by all the contributions so far. And I am ecstatic to hear there will be more!

this guide should be what you need: http://www.tunequest.org/migrating-your-itunes-library-from-windows-to-mac/20061105/ (http://www.tunequest.org/migrating-your-itunes-library-from-windows-to-mac/20061105/).

Yeah, that's the consolidation option, which I was hoping to avoid because I don't have the space easily available...but I think it's going to be the only way. Ah well. Some file-juggling will be required.

Ta :)

For rar files, I use UnRarX. Also, I love Adium and don't forget Parian if you want to play anything on your Quicktime player or edit any movie files.

Adium is quite awesome, yes. (Esp. if you use more than one IM; you can put in LJ, Gmail, Facebook, and a zillion other things.)
Oh and also if you're an LJ-client sort of person, Xjournal is awesome.

MIRO for videos. It's a media player AND a bittorrent manager AND will maintain a library of the video files on your HD, should you so desire.

Also: Adium. Journler, if you are interested in an LJ-editor-like text editing program (I use it for all my fic, and it lets you keep a running list of all the "entries" you have on the go and organize them into nested folders that can be programmed to sort entries by tag). Books is kind of a neat home-card-catalog program.

This is... unrelated, but I was looking for Leverage fic and I found this resource post (http://community.livejournal.com/geteven_getfic/83104.html) that might be relevant to your interests. The part of your interests that are about CON MEN, at least.
