we have the technology

O HAI, I am upgrading my tech stuff, because even though Fabian is still doing a good job, his battery is deader than dead and he is juuuust starting to do old-computer things like suddenly go to unbanishable black screens or treat some DVDs weirdly. SO. The new package will be an iMac (VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARE, YOU SHALL BE MINE. oh man. I will never get any study done ever again.) for general home use and a 10" EeePC for lugging around everywhere in case of free wireless, and taking notes in class (this is how I will free up the time which I will be using to make fanvids, clearly). My father's also offloading his wallet-sized external hard drive onto me, to replace Louis, who is ancient and really quite ridiculously enormous for a 100GB drive.

I am excited! I will need brand new names for them all! I am also considering getting a PINK EeePC because clearly my brain is melting, but...I don't really want a white one, and the bright green is kind of fugly, and maybe I should own fewer sleek black things. Azula the iPod might get jealous and DESTROY IT WITH ELECTRICITY.

Oh I am such a liar. We all know I will probably end up getting the black one anyway. Although...the shade of pink they use is quite dark and nice and they call it 'Sakura', which is a perfect name for the laptop right there! And if I pick appropriate names for the iMac and the new external drive, I have the makings of a great Female Characters Who Could Probably Kill You themed set.

Hmm.

Anyway, current Mac owners: is there any particular software you recommend other than the iLife stuff and Office for Macs?

I'm using Acorn for photoediting (just shelled out the fifty bucks; keep telling myself it's cheaper than Photoshop), Adium for IM client (CANNOT BE BEATEN. AMAZING. Don't use iChat!), Evernote for note-taking, Camino for web browsing (like Firefox, but runs native; I have Firefox as well just for the add-ons) ... I find OpenOffice totally unworkable and NeoOffice fairly good, but if you're shelling out for the real deal, you're covered.

Um, I think that's all. I kind of accumulate stuff. I've heard good things about Quicksilver.

Currently I am agonising over whether or not I need a wireless keyboard.

I suspect not.

NO GAMES. GAMES ARE DEATH. I have always found arcade games like Tetris to be hugely boring anyway.

I kind of do. I WILL FIND SOME WAY TO BLAME CLAIRA FOR THIS.

They are the only games I like! Tetris, computer pinball (o sixth grade), solitaire, Katamari Damacy: I could happily live without any other computer or video game ever. And, in fact, I do.

Pink is the color of joy and awesomeness. Claira knows it and so do I. IT IS JUST A TRUTH FACT.

I don't really play any sorts of games...ever. It is the one area of geekdom in which I fail. I had a brief mad stint of playing Legend of Zelda games on my brother's Gameboy, many many years ago, but that's about it.

You Plastix and your pink! I feel as though I am finally succumbing to the EVIL PEER PRESSURE.

You could always get a white/black EeePC and then decorate it the way people decorate their Nintendo DS cases.

That first one BURNS MY EYES. I love the Obama one, though -- I guess I'd need some way to print onto stickers.

Did you ever contact your books with transparent contact paper (http://www.earthskids.com/contactpaper.aspx) in high school to make them last longer? Why don't you get some of that and use it to stick some pretty Japanese yuzen paper or something onto the EeePC?

It's PINK, dude. PINK.

My work here is DONE.

Adium for IM, Miro for pirating videos (it's a BT manager AND video player, which is deadly), Twitterriffic if you tweet, Journler for managing fic/LJ entries, NetNewsWire for RSS. Most of that is free, though.

Also, I am seriously considering getting an Eee for school myself, if I can find one in the 300-400 dollar range. I am absolutely atrocious at reading journals or doing research for class without constantly tabbing back to my gmail.

Quicksilver is supposed to be fly as fuck but I can't make heads or tails of it. It kind of takes all the Mac-is-for-computer-idiots wind out of my computer-idiot sails.

Here are things I have and like:

+ Adium
+ Photoshop
+ Camino
+ Opera (Web browser. It knows how to torrent! It's very slow but sometimes a lifesaver if like me you are much too stupid ever to figure out real torrenting)
+ Handbrake (turns from-DVD files into avi or iPod or a couple of other format files)
+ Mac the Ripper (rips DVDs)
+ Popcorn (burns DVDs)
+ Poladroid (makes photographs look like Polaroids! cool!)
+ Skype
+ MacHacha (joins files that have been split a la HJ Split)
+ UnRarX (for those pesky .rar archives)
+ XJournal (LJ client)
+ AppDelete (for more complete deleting of programs and associated files)
+ Office

I would also like to point out that the not-free software on this list can be obtained um, not not-free. Or I probably wouldn't have it.
