Merlin recs

Yes! It's time for Fahye to prod you all in the direction of a fandom for a show which she has never seen! (Note: I am planning to watch it. Imminently. Episodes are being sourced.)

First off, I offer you an excellent pimping post.

There is also this video by [livejournal.com profile] mamoru22, which I linked to yesterday. If it does not make you grin like an idiot, there is no hope for you.

Apparently everyone has chemistry with everyone else (hurrah!) but fandom being fandom, it has zeroed in on the DESTINED TO BE SOULMATES, NO REALLY, JUST ASK THE GIANT DRAGON pairing of Merlin/Arthur.

- And Still by [livejournal.com profile] foreverdirt is a plotty adventure story with MAGIC and QUESTS and other great things. The fact that I am even considering a new fandom in the midst of OH GOD EXAMS ARGH time is entirely her fault.

- Controllable Things by [livejournal.com profile] ariastar is about Arthur's fear and Control Issues (the type of issues closest to my heart!) and man, I am so glad I wheedled Aria into this fandom.

- the way the sunshine gleams by [livejournal.com profile] snakevsladder is a slightly darker take on their relationship and Merlin's opinions. Mmm.

- I have reread MERLIN by [livejournal.com profile] moonythestrals a couple of times now, and it keeps getting funnier. It is a FRAT BOY AU and it is stuffed full of meta and beer and scriptwriting and Arthur's BlackBerry.

I also feel duty-bound to mention that [livejournal.com profile] lassiterfics and [livejournal.com profile] bedlamsbard are cowriting some kind of epic Narnia/Merlin thing, and in the meantime there is Aslan talking to the Dragon which is hilariously similar to what happened when Lucifer met Galadan that one time.

The SMH tv guide said on Monday that Channel Ten's picking Merlin up - don't know when it'd be airing, probably sometime next year.

Channel Ten? Huh, that seems an odd choice for them, and you'd think the ABC would have taken it to replace Robin Hood.

Well, Ten did take Torchwood (and look how well that worked out) - maybe they're trying again to get someone, anyone, to watch them.

Is nobody elses brain hurting at the whole Arthur living with Uther, at Camelot, and Merlin being a young boy coming to the castle? Its very nicely done and fab special effects but I've spent way too many years reading Arthurian stuffs to get my head round the whole AU aspect..

It would take a LOT more than that to make my brain hurt :) In my opinion the Arthurian mythos is there to be played with and twisted in interesting ways.

Fair enough... I guess a dragon makes up for a lot :)

totally OT

Any Arthurian stuffs you'd recommend?

Well its more a matter of the general themes of the story (Merlin arranging for Uther to have Ygraine and the child Arther being born and then being raised by Sir Kay and the sword in the stone thing *after Uther is dead*) being ingrained in me over the years from various retellings. I still rate Mary Stewart's The Crystal Cave and sequels most highly, it adds plenty of extra stuff but doesn't muck about with the core. Dragons not as cool as the one in the tv series, mind you... :)

T H White's Sword in the Stone was a childhood fave, wasn't as keen on the whole Once and Future Thing expansion but perhaps it needs revisiting now I'm older. Of more recent things, I didn't at all get on with Douglas Clegg's Mordred, Bastard Son but its had some good reviews if you're looking for something different.

Sweet! Thank you!

firstly, I think you should know that I came upon this post because I was re-stalking all your lovely, lovely Naruto fic for a trip down memory lane, & then realized that you were in the Merlin fandom now & like, flailed. & then I was like, wait.

WAIT.

wtf she liked my story. um. FLAILFLAILFLAIL

thank you for the rec - & these are some of my absolutely favorite stories from this fandom, & I am so so flattered that mine is up there with them. not to mention the fact that your writing, is, um, gorgeous & amazing. UGH.

ps, have you read this (http://lo0o0ony-lauren.livejournal.com/88953.html?style=mine)? I can't stop flailing about it. I love it so much.

Man, I know, I seriously compartmentalise my fandoms, so I saw your name and I was like WAIT WHY IS SHE EVEN TALKING ABOUT NARUTO?? which is terribly hypocritical of me because I am the most multifandom person imaginable and possess no attention span.

AND YES I loved your story to tiny tiny pieces and it is tagged as pie.fic on my delicious (pie.fic being the fic equivalent of curling up with, well, pie). I love this fandom. Even though my sole role in it at the moment is as a consumer of other people's fic, which is pretty much the exact opposite to my role in Naruto fandom. BUT I MIGHT ALREADY BE WRITING WRITE SOMETHING IN THE FAR-OFF HYPOTHETICAL FUTURE.

Oooooh new fic! I will read it when I have studied some.

Mostly, I have memoried this post for later fic perusal (I, too, have yet to actually see any Merlin but am totally giggly about other people's fic and descriptions of it), but I feel I must inform you that I had to read the Aslan-Dragon one so that I could then go reread the Lucifer-Galadan thread. And then I reread the River-Lucifer in the same post.

And now I am overcome with fits of gleeful nostalgia, and a burning desire to thread River with all the Ethereals ever regardless of plot continuity or anyone's schedule including my own. Man that was fun.

Someday! Someday again oh yes.

We're all busy these days, really, though you are swamped rather more than most, o miss medical student. But someday! And it will STILL BE AWESOME.

Meanwhile, there's always rereading. >.>
