Supanova 2008 (full report)
Warning: lots of photos. LOTS.
ryokophoenix arrived on Thursday and we had a great time on Friday traipsing around the city with
queencattabby and buying last-minute stuff for our costumes, but the real story begins on
SATURDAY
Woke up at 6am. After two hours of frantic scrabbling and pinning and searching and tugging and tucking and adjusting, we managed to leave by 8am and enjoy the walk to Central and subsequent trains to Olympic Park -- dressed as Disney characters. We got stares. It was fab.
We arrived at 9:45 and the queue for prepaid was a bitch and the queue for at-the-door was EVEN BITCHIER. While I was acquiring a slight sunburn standing around in the queue I got my first photo:

MINI LINK & MARIO. They were adorable.
Once we were inside I quickly nabbed pictures of some Naruto cosplayers:

Kakashi & Hinata (we stood with the Hinata in the queue, she was very sweet)

Tsunade!
The thing about being a brightly-coloured, very recognisable group is that one does nothing for most of the day apart from pose for photos. So we did that for a while.

A LONG while.
I'll note right now that I didn't take many pictures at ALL because we had a group photographer, so I am relying on her for most of the awesome shots. I may do a second post in the future when I have those photos, but...enjoy the smaller & more eclectic collection from my camera & the few forum posts that have appeared.

I called this one 'kick your ass' because
_leareth and I look freakin' awesome and, indeed, like we could kick your ass on the slightest provocation. I think Esmeralda and Mulan could be excellent friends.

Yes, I only have one pose. Shhhh. It's an easy one. And it shows off the sdkjhfskfhsdcjdzfjd fucking shirt which finally, finally agreed to stay in the canonical gravity-defying position, after I had ironed the collar to within an inch of its life and safety-pinned it to the transparent straps. Goddamn Disney. NORMAL CLOTHING CAN'T DO THAT, YOU FREAKS.

Mulan & Rorschach = a fearsome combination?
Eventually we managed to collect our entire group and head outside for the main photoshoot. Those are the pictures I don't have yet, unfortunately, but I did get a couple of nice shots of [Bad username or site: ryokophoenix as Belle @ livejournal.com]...

...and a small Wonder Woman (with the sun in her eyes)...

...and the Akatsuki umbrella. I love those shots. Please admire her lovely curled Belle hair at the front; that took quite a bit of coaxing and curling and cursing from both of us. Actually, we were the most foul-mouthed Disney characters one could hope to encounter: 'SHIT, my BLOODY SHOE fell off and got lost under my petticoat AGAIN!' (Mel) & 'If I have to wear these FUCKING SHOES for ONE MORE MINUTE, I will MURDER SOMEONE' (me). Yes, most of the trauma was shoe-derived. Mine were flat hellish thongs that wreaked havoc on my feet, and Mel's kept slipping off.
Anyway, after prancing around outside for ages, eating chocolate biscuits and taking lots of impromptu shots with delighted small children, we headed inside for the cosplay parade/competition thing. It was quite casual on the Saturday, just walk-on-walk-off, and we just did a simple set of poses and twirls to a cut of 'Ever Ever After'.

queencattabby gets into the swing of things as Jasmine.

The final group pose! The Blue Fairy and the Ugly Stepsister got a bit cut off, unfortunately.

I love this shot, it turned out beautifully. And how good is our Fairy Godmother?
Unfortunately one member of our group (Cinderella) was emceeing the cosplay, and two others (Giselle and Ariel) were judges, so it's probably best that we didn't win anything. The groups that did were fantastic, too, so they definitely deserved it :)

The only other thing I photographed on Saturday was the setup for Cosplay Chess. That was it. I didn't see any booths or buy any merchandise or anything. I posed and I smiled. Fun, and bizarrely tiring! But we did get a lot more done on
SUNDAY
I was a very casual future!Sakura today, which basically meant a pink wig and a red scarf over a half-assed version of the ANBU uniform. I didn't pose; I took pictures of other people.

Okay, I posed once. TONY STARK, YOU GUYS.

Our Aladdin & Genie underwent a drastic change overnight, and did a great Shinji and Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Likewise for our Ariel and Cinderella, who became Tonks and Fleur. That's her REAL HAIR. It's amazing.
Mel's feet were hurting so we went and sat down very early to watch the Sunday cosplay, meaning we sat through Jared Padalecki's Q&A session! I'm actually really glad I caught that; he was really sweet and funny and relaxed, dealt well with awkward questions and told hilarious stories about Australian slang and Jensen's annoying habits and how it was to film particular episodes...he's HUGE, my god, but he seems like a genuinely lovely guy. (I also walked past Jewel Staite at one point, and Kandyse McClure at another, but didn't hear them speak at all.)

We spotted this Firefly group sitting in the stands while the Sunday cosplay was being set up; it started with the Jayne hat, and then we realised it was an actual JAYNE, sitting next to a SIMON, and omg! lots of them! Yes, there are two Mals -- one wasn't connected to the group, but posed anyway.

This guy was one of the volunteers running the cosplay, and he was a FANTASTIC L. Even though he was giving instructions and keeping the crowd entertained he never broke physical character. He stood with L's characteristic slouch (it must have HURT to maintain that all weekend) and he always held the microphone by two fingers, and walked like he was not quite sure where he was. It was amazing. This angle makes his eye makeup look slightly demonic; it was better in real life.
We didn't catch all of the cosplay because we had to leave early, but here's a few shots:

Bellatrix!

A Time Brigade -- their skit was actually really funny, full of jokes about how many people the Doctor has snogged since becoming Ten, and Jack hitting on Five, and Five telling the Master off for telling him 'spoilers' about his future life, and yeah, it was good fun :)

The Shinji and Asuka from above changed costumes for the competition (such dedication!) and wore these phenomenal Angel & Eva suits. Their skit was even funnier -- I really hope it won -- and featured a mimed courtship followed by battle to the death, complete with hilarious backing music and signs saying NOM NOM NOM and D: I loved it.

SUCH a good Joker.

This couple did Indiana Jones & the Cate Blanchett character, and announced their engagement. In character. HEE.

A small Naruto group.
I did manage to buy some things, too: a nice set of Ouran bookmarks, a gorgeous Sai pin, a set of Haruhi Suzumiya pins, a Kyouya badge and a Team 7 fanart badge that I LOVE ENORMOUSLY. My everyday shoulder bag is now nicely decorated (I tried to take a picture but the camera flash effectively wipes the shiny badges into nothingness, alas!).
The last photos I got were on the train back home, to commemorate Mel's very cool Misa costume (which was better than a lot of the other Misas, despite the fact that it was mostly thrown together on Friday).

Misa writing in her Death Note...

...with predictable results. (This is my favourite photo of the day <33333)

We decided that Misa and Sakura would be excellent friends unless they both fell in love with the same guy. In which case Sakura would be kind of doomed.
YAY CONS. Of course, we're already thinking about next year's Supanova -- I think we might try our hands at Azula & the Dangerous Ladies. Which means I have to somehow adjust a wig to make Mai's ridiculous hair, but at least I'll have the right skin tone this time :D

I also love the photos over on
Going to a con here in London in a couple of weeks time. This weekend is going to be full of cosplay madness as I struggle to get my cosplays organised! (Why, why am I not an organised cosplayer???)
PS. The Firefly cosplayers=so much WIN! I would have jumped that Mal, so pretty!

Some great pics! Supanova was SO much fun and I'm glad I got the chance to pop out and see you all for a little bit. :D
Oh, btw, the L? He's been dressed that way for the last 3-4 cons and has never broken character...and yes, his back ends up in major pain but he still does it. *lol* Ah the things we do for cosplay! Bad posture, gravity defying clothing and uncomfy shoes!
