Torchwood 2x01 - (see icon)

* Thank fuck for the newfound sense of self-awareness that the show has developed over the break. Keep talking about how you're 'pretty, stupid and resilient', keep up the asides about the silly amount of sex, keep up the genre jokes.

* I am also enormously pleased at how much they've become Team Torchwood in Jack's absence, the way they work together and don't fight so much and are immediately, carelessly loyal. And have grown some hints of actual efficiency, especially Ianto. Also, um, during the break I was starting to rethink my unhealthy attachment to Owen, but NO. NO. I STAND BY IT. With his total enjoyment of high-speed chases and his bitchface and his weird courage and improvisation and his tendency to mouth off even especially when it'll get him shot.

* Blah blah insert Captain John commentary here. I don't have anything to add to the general consensus: he's a hilarously bitchy version of Spike and I'm glad he'll be sticking around. And I am amused by the fact that the Time Agency Rules Of Engagement seem to consist of one tactic only, and that is making out with stuff. I started to make an official flow diagram of this (is it armed? if Y, disarm. if N, make out with. NB - disarming is not essential for outmaking to occur) and then I got bored.

* Requisite ship opinion section:
- Jack/Gwen = NO. JUST NO.
- Jack/Ianto = uhggghhggh all right, though only because they gave Ianto a personality.
- Owen/Tosh = my gut instinct is NO NO NO but I've decided that I'll be able to stomach it, if and only if they include relevant events during Jack's absence and take it really, really slowly and stop sledgehammering awkwardly at the audience.
- Jack/John = as everyone has said, Doctor/Master lite, and thus to be encouraged in all its psychopathic snarky glory.
(- Martha/Owen = er, only Aria and I will ever, ever ship this, and then only if it involves new!improved!Owen and Martha calling all the shots, but they could be totally awesome.)

* That was EXCITING, you know? It was fast and flashy and fun and funny. I do love this show sometimes.

Okay, just the IDEA of this makes me eternally grateful that I started watching Torchwood. Because, YES.

THEY COULD HAVE DOCTORLY INJOKES AND GET INTO SHOUTING MATCHES ABOUT ALIEN ANATOMY. And then Martha and Gwen could have coffee together and talk about Owen and he would HATE IT SO MUCH.

Oh, Fahye. You realize that if this doesn't happen on the show, I will most likely force you to write it.

Do not rethink your unhealthy attachment to Owen! Owen is the best part.

I am pleased that my resolution to Like Ianto Jones is being helped by the fact that he is mildly awesome now.

I would be okay with the Owen/Tosh if there was ... Martha inserted between them? I dunno. Anyway I figure I can ship Martha/Owen no matter what, because I love them both enough that if the show does it I can make it work in my head somehow, sort of like I made Ten and Martha's dynamic work just because I love them both even though it was actually rubbish. And if they don't have Owen/Martha in the show I can write it. So: win-win. :D

My objections to Jack/Ianto have no grounding in character -- I think Ianto's longstanding affection for Jack and his new determination to be seen as more than an office fling is portrayed quite well, and I certainly buy their dynamic, I just...UGH, FANDOM. WHY MUST YOU RUIN THINGS.

Just be all, hey Fahye, writing two doctors totally counts as medical revision, and I will be ALL OVER IT.

I ... confess seeing that fandom was all about the Jack/Ianto but never actually investigating. Dare I ask how fandom ruins things? (in this particular case, I mean. XD)

I was watching [livejournal.com profile] torch_wood from the very beginning, and people were writing Jack/Ianto fic BEFORE A SINGLE EPISODE HAD BEEN SHOWN, simply because it was Jack and That Cute Butler and omg, slash, yay! And it got so that people were apologising for writing other pairings, or just not bothering because everyone was All About Jack And Ianto, and most of the fic was terrible anyway. So by the time it actually happened in canon all I could think was how little I wanted all the crazy shippers to be given CANON EVIDENCE to weave into their horrible creations. (I mean, I am sure that there exists some excellent Jack/Ianto fic. Somewhere. Unfortunately I cannot be bothered to wade through the shit to find it.)

*cough* (http://del.icio.us/polarisnorth/jack/ianto)

I can tell you what I think the best ones are, too. ([livejournal.com profile] giddygeek is especially good.)

I've loved Jack/Ianto since I started watching, but I've never participated in the fandom outside of looking for fic. Who fen terrified me enough that I didn't dare go looking for Torchwood fen.

I read VERY little fanfic, but it's good to know where to look. Ta! Actually, my favourite fic in this fandom so far is this one:

Employee Benefits (http://mimarie.livejournal.com/9647.html) by [livejournal.com profile] mimarie. Jack/Owen. It's so good I managed to reconcile myself to the fact that I don't really ship Jack/Owen in any active sense at all.

*dead, dead, dead of laugh*

OMG SO GOOD.
