Bones 3x09 - The Santa in the Slush
...well, all right, it starts OUT as calmly reasoned.
First off: Sweets is in the credits now! I was surprised by how happy this made me, but I am ever so pleased that we've progressed from 'I hate psychology' to actually having a psychological voice on the show; his long spiel about maintaining a fictional sense of hope through dishonesty was good enough, but Brennan's serious nodding was the best. And he's so CUTE, with his elf-hat and his ability to ignore all the jibes Booth makes about his age, and the fact that his immediate reaction was "You kissed? ...was there tongue?" -- not even in a clinical way, more of a hilariously curious way. He was also far less creepy this episode than the last. If he turns out to be Gormagon I will be very pleased with the show for making it someone we know rather than a random new character (Dexter S1 handled it brilliantly), but I'll just say that the show had better hold off on any plot developments like that until I finish my fics. Because Sweets is a fantastic wildcard: you can put him anywhere and get him to spout off observations about anything!
I think as a whole this episode wasn't as good as S1's Christmas episode: the emotion wasn't handled with the same subtlety, and we didn't get enough (in my opinion) of the minor characters. The plot was kind of silly, but it was very much on-purpose silly, deliberately more light-hearted in tone than the show's average episode (and why not?) and I don't think anyone was paying much attention to the plot anyway. Because this was blatantly an episode for Booth and Brennan and their families (I forgave the dearth of Cam & Angela & co. because there was lots of Russ).
OKAY. SO. KISSING.
I wasn't sure how they'd handle it -- mistletoe kissing is a very worn device -- but it was HILARIOUS. That long, business-like discussion between Brennan and Caroline, over multiple adjustments to a single cup of coffee. "I'M FEELING PUCKISH." I could not love Caroline more: entirely unapologetic about what she wants and why she wants it, even when the 'why' is quite seriously 'because I think it would be funny'. I loved her little speech about 'and you're all Doctor Brennan and Special Agent Seeeeeeeley Booth' and her stipulations about length.
And then. AND THEN. Carrying on a normal conversation about work while Brennan is setting up mistletoe over their heads. "I'm only telling you out of professional courtesy. Want some gum?"
David Boreanaz deserves some kind of tinsel-adorned Oscar for the things his face did during that conversation, especially right after she said "No, the lips." (Booth: o_O)
And Brennan's incredibly determined facial expression and the way her hands moved on his coat lapels and Caroline's face slowly changing mhdhkfhnclksdolkjlkfhsa that whole shot was SO GOOD.
"I'm sure she feels really foolish right now."
*AWKWARD SILENCE*
AND THEIR FACES. ALL DAZED AND EMBARRASSED AND WITH TINY SMILES.
(The full scene on YouTube, for your viewing pleasure.)
And then their little therapy session with Sweets <33 Which I really wish I could find on YouTube and force everyone to watch. Alas.

OMG I DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE. YAAAAAAAAAAAAYS.
...PUCKISH.

Omg, Rawles, I forgot to talk about the GUM and what a hilarious way that was to convey the fact that at some point, there was tongue on Brennan's behalf, and how befuddled Booth was when he was looking at it.

I like could not even process the gum. Like, I had the passing thought that they would do that when she was chewing gum, but then I didn't know if they would really go there BECAUSE THAT IS THE MOST CLASSIC "OMG THERE WAS TONGUE" GAG IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE AND OMG. <3333

Hah. I don't think I've ever seen it used before. *Brennanesque Pop Culture What? moment for the day*

Also I can't even convey how HEE I found this whole episode (versus the S1 Christmas ep, which was both HEE and made me mist up a little). I love that their idea of a Christmas ep is to ksjddfhlskjdfh kill Santa. I love Zach SO OBVIOUSLY having been devastated to find out that there was no Santa when he was a kid. I LOVE CAROLINE. Is it bad that I found her whole blackmail scene much better than the kiss itself? OH WELL.

I loved the blackmail scene. And I loved that Brennan got all of her WTF out the way during that scene, so that she was being very determinedly matter-of-fact to Booth about it. And Caroline was all NUDGE NUDGE, MISTLETOE and Booth was thinking I AM THE ONLY SANE PERSON IN THIS ROOM.

I am looking back to his giant family from S1 Christmas, and that time when he was quizzing Cam about the fact that her 'dead mother came to her' ("I think it would be wonderful if it were possible.") and OH ZACH, HONEY. <333333

I am currently juggling everyone's attitudes to the less-than-scientific in my SPN/Bones fic. DIFFICULT.

INORITE? At first I was all bitter, because I loved Goodman, but come on. "Santa is magic, okay?" ♥!

I fell completely for Cam when she dragged Booth to that dinner party. Because her family sounds SO INSANE and she's kind of insecure despite the fact that she's gorgeous and intelligent and I want to be her when I grow up.

THE BIT WHERE ALL THE SANTAS LAUGH JOLLILY IN UNISON? AND THE ARREST SCENE, WITH THE THREATENING SINGING SANTAS?
I HAVE NEVER LAUGHED SO HARD IN MY LIFE.
BOOTH'S FACE.

cousinsmarried.it was like kissing my brother um kjshfskfdasff

Seriously. Do you know what I want? I want the fic where Bones sits Booth down and tries to talk him into casual sex, because she enjoys it so, and it ends up being all emotional and weird
just like with her brother?.no subject
I have a small crush on Russ. WHICH IS WEIRD. He is not my type at ALL. And yet...!
I. want. that. fic. BUT I AM NOT WRITING IT. I AM WRITING MY CROSSOVER. AND MY YULETIDE. *firm*

DOOO IIIT. I would even help! You could write the sciencey UST you were BORN FOR, I could help with the porny bits and adding lots of silly neuroscience jokes, YOU WOULDN'T EVEN NOTICE IT WAS THERE.

I may or may not have already written 1000 solid words of making out against a wall.no subject
I may or may not want to see that, if you are in a sharing mood.no subject
Later she will brush her hair sideways and bare the nape of her neck, searching for pressure marks where the clasp of her necklace would have dug into the skin -- in her experience, everything leaves a mark -- but she will find nothing. Not a scratch, not the slightest indentation. She will conclude, trapped by her own insistence upon quantifiable proof, that she was not pulled with nearly enough force to explain the violence of the movement; that Booth's fingers only tangled themselves in the strings of the necklace after she was propelled forward; that, in fact, the initiator of the kiss was she herself.
(Basically 95% of those 1000 words are Brennan's inner monologue overanalysing everything to death, but at least there is kissing as well.)

Other fics first, then this one. Though my crossover is developing a mind of its own and sprouting all sorts of weird things, like involved conversations about genetics and Dean/Bela notquite!phonesex.
