hope with a beat to it

Today:

- read Darkly Dreaming Dexter on bus to Sydney (verdict: meh)
- had interview at Women's College, then was told I had a place there if I get into medicine (\o/)
- met with [livejournal.com profile] the_grynne for delicious toasted sandwich things and kind loan of Pratchett
- met with [livejournal.com profile] _leareth for ramen and admiration of her shiny new Admission To Practice Law Or Something certificate
- read Making Money on bus back to Canberra (verdict: SO. GOOD. OH MAN. HOW I HAVE MISSED CRAZY ANKH-MORPORK SOCIOLOGY.)

And now, if you'll excuse me, I think I need to fall into bed.

You can borrow it once my family has read it?

Dexter functions far better as a show than a book. Which is surprisingly because it's usually the opposite.

Yes! I think I'd have enjoyed the novel better if I'd read it BEFORE the show, because my preconceived ideas about pacing really spoiled the second half of the book.

THE CHAIN OF GOLD-ISH!!!

Oh man.

(I also just remembered that I might have left some pencil markings in my copy. Oops.)

(You did. But I found them very amusing!)

I WAS SO HAPPY THAT WE GOT PONDER STIBBONS. And Sacharissa! And Angua & Carrot & Detritus & Vimes! And immense amounts of Vetinari! Pratchett giving screen time to all of his A-M characters makes me very, very pleased.

Actually, the best paragraph in the book was the one where Moist was musing about William de Worde's writing style.

There's been quite a lot of prediction post-MM that Moist is being groomed into becoming a possible successor to Vetinari, and watching his interactions with the Fourth Estate (de Worde and Sacharissa) and the Watch (Carrot) was very interesting.

Actually, the best paragraph in the book was the one where Moist was musing about William de Worde's writing style.

Where he considers how William writes his editorials like a pompous old man, when really he's actually no older than Moist is? LOVE.

That...would make me very happy, actually. I was just thinking yesterday about how sad I would be to see anything happen to Vetinari, but Moist would be IDEAL as the next Patrician: the impression the book gives is that Vetinari is just going to bounce him around the various civic posts until he gets a thorough overview of the running of the city itself.

What I'd like to see next in the social-studies-of-A-M collection would be something about the city's health system. Predictably :D

Moist is also catching onto Vetinari's idea of civic virtue: It's All About the City. He'd be a great character to take A-K through its next stage.

Maybe we'll see something of that as Vetinari gets started on his grand project of Public Works (I can't remember what he called it in the book). The geopolitical situation is now quite stable; the city's finances are being secured, thanks to Moist; there's basic law and order, thanks to Vimes; health, education, and other infrastructure should be next.

I'd hate to see something happen to Vetinari as well, but I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that his goal is ultimately to direct A-M toward a time when it will no longer need a dictator like him to hold the reins.

The Undertaking? Yes! I'm very excited to see how that will play out.

(Re: Moist on de Worde, I believe the words 'writes as though he has a bum stuffed full of tweed' were used.)
