music spazzery #1 - switchfoot
I've been meaning for a while to do a series of posts in which I rave with a lot of enthusiasm and not a lot of serious analysis about my favourite musical artists. Each one will contain six songs by that artist and a small amount of commentary in which I shall attempt to leave the capslock off.
Grab the songs, have a listen, see what you think. These are all artists whom I like enough to buy their stuff, and would encourage you to do the same.
We're starting with Switchfoot, because I am waiting waiting waiting for these guys to get big enough that they'll consider coming to Australia. I own all of their albums, but I haven't listened to some of them enough to be able to pick out a particular song, so this list is skewed towards their more recent work.
Gone (The Beautiful Letdown) -- alternate MediaFire link
Where's your treasure, where's your hope
If you get the world and lose your soul
She pretends like, she pretends like she's immortal
I think this was the first song of theirs that I really fell for. And, um, I have this thing where my entire love for a song can be based around one tiny perfect moment in it that just works for me musically. In this song, it occurs at 1:48.
Golden (Nothing Is Sound) -- alternate MediaFire link
So this final verse is a contradiction
And the more we learn the less we know
I suppose that objectively, this one is nothing special, but it's lyrical male pop-rock and that is MY GENRE. I don't know. It's very easy to listen to, and it's about rising above your own situation/opinion of yourself, which is kind of the theme of Nothing Is Sound as an album.
Awakening (Oh! Gravity) -- alternate MediaFire link
These dreams started singing to me out of nowhere
And in all my life I don't know that I ever felt so alive
Oh! Gravity's theme is turning points which make you reassess your life, and about making the most of the time that is given to you (thank you, Gandalf). It took me a couple of listens to get into it, but now I am REALLY into it. Especially this song.
Dirty Second Hands (Oh! Gravity) -- alternate MediaFire link
Are you really as tough as you think
You blink and you're over the brink
This song is not the kind of thing that I would usually listen to at all, but it somehow got connected in my head with Zuko from Avatar and now I am very, very attached to it. I have a PERFECT fanvid all plotted out in my head, awaiting...software that works.
Faust, Midas, And Myself (Oh! Gravity) -- alternate MediaFire link
What direction?
Death or action!
Life begins at the intersection.
For the most part I don't care as much for Switchfoot's slower songs, so most of this one I am kind of 'meh' about, but: a) it completely embodies the 'turning point' theme, b) I think the title is awesome, and c) the contrast between the verses and the kick-in-the-head chorus (perfect moment = 3:04) is something I never get tired of.
Politicians (Nothing Is Sound) -- alternate MediaFire link
I pledge allegiance to a country without borders, without politicians
Watching for my sky to get torn apart
This is my favourite Switchfoot song. (The final song of the six will always be my favourite by that artist.) It kicks ass. It's fast and loud and very omgrebelliousyouth! in a melodic and not very threatening way. I love it.

... and then I realized you'd uploaded them to MegaUpload!
And this is a sad tragic state of affairs because my computer and wireless combine their powers to fight the great evil that is MegaUpload* and so I can't download any of these. :(
I don't suppose there's any chance of you re-uploading to a different server (like MediaFire.com)? :-/
* I am aware that this is in their biased view, and many people really like MegaUpload. I, however, also really hate the forty-five second wait, tons of advertising, and one-at-a-time limitation.

The rest of the time, for instance after not attempting to use the site for three months, it will inform me that I have exceeded my download limit, please come back tomorrow. (Actual example.)
I prefer using other servers because they have a tendency to actually work so that I can get the files uploaded. I prefer MediaFire over SendSpace, for instance, because MF is faster and allows multiple downloads; I don't complain when people use SS, though, because although it's slow at least I can know that I'll eventually have the file in question.
But with MegaUpload, three-quarters of the time I end up giving up after five minutes of wrestling with the site with nothing to show for it; I have no files and I've just wasted five minutes.

I'll edit the post with alternate links, though it'll take a little while. I'm trying to finish an assignment at the same time.

Good luck with your assignment, and thanks a lot for uploading these – I really did want to listen to them, after all. :)

Seeing as how I think I was expecting to check back tomorrow, or something. XD

(Also: It may be just me, but the 'Faust, Midas and Myself' link leads back to Dirty Second Hands? Double-dose of Zuko!)
