I am an officer of the law

Courtesy of it being my father's 50th birthday, I am sitting at my computer sipping a glass of 1991 Grange. You wish you were me.

Actually, this post is an effort to put off watching the next few episodes of SPN, which all have names like 'Skin' and 'Bugs'. Simple four-letter nouns should not be able to sound that creepy.

I am starting to see where fandom is coming from with this whole Wincest thing. Not that I'm planning on writing it any time soon, or chanting SNOG SNOG SNOG at the screen, but I know how fandom works.

Creators: WHAT. WHERE DID YOU GET THIS DISGUSTING IDEA, BELOVED TARGET AUDIENCE?
Fandom: Uh, you gave us a show where the only two characters who are around long enough to have decent personalities/interactions are two hot guys who like to touch each other a lot and save each other's lives. WHAT, EXACTLY, DID YOU THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN HERE?

ETA: ...yeah, I knew this was a bad idea. My reaction to bugs generally involves shrieking "KILL IT WITH YOUR SHOE!" and then becoming excessively violent. The only things preventing me from turning this episode off are the facts that there are blatant gay jokes happening and Dean just appeared with a towel on his head.

Please don't start chanting. Knowing somone else who watche SPN and doesn't ship them would be nice *sighs at it*

...*TACKLEGLOMPS* HELLO!

Come to the platonic side! We have cake, whereas the other only has lubricant.

[personal profile] ashen_key 2007-07-07 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think that sounds all fair and reasonable.

(also, you have no idea how much that made me giggle)

It was my dad's 52nd on Thursday! Also good wine and great food.

er.. Working on answers to your questions right now. I'm having to refrain from going on...and on... :)

Take as loooong as you need :)

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
You so know the creators did that on purpose. They are not in the least bit surprised. :D
ext_21673: ([vm] so fucking special)

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
If that is in fact that case, I SALUTE THEM. And wish them much happiness in their ivory tower with popcorn, from which they look down and mock the earnestness with which the fangirls 'ship.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
And aspire to be them, one day. I swear it's my life's ambition to write a TV series that causes incest shipping, I really do. :D

If I ever create ANYTHING that enters mainstream media, I will make sure it is fandom-friendly. There will be very blatant slashy subtext all over the place.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
Is your plan anything like mine?

1. Write hugely successful TV series/book series with slashy subtext.
2. Read the hundreds of fics. Giggle.
3. Write own fanfics under a sockpuppet account. Become BNF.
4. Start massive flamewars every second month.
5. Giggle at resulting fallout.
6. Write another hugely successful TV series/book series with EVEN SLASHIER subtext.
7. CONVENTIONS.
ashen_key: (legs and shoes and short short skirts)

[personal profile] ashen_key 2007-07-07 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
I always planned to just have the slash outfront, but I think your way sounds like more fun.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Plus this way all the anti-slashers will still watch it, and have huge fights with the slashers about how "she totally didn't mean for you to write them having sex, you disgusting deviants" and then I can randomly drop it into an interview or something that yes, yes I did.

... there is more to me that petty small-minded vengefulness, you know. It's "porn", mostly.

[identity profile] not-in-denial.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
You are entirely my new favourite person.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
Spite and porn are the only reasons for doing ANYTHING.
ext_21673: ([other] fahye - new crack bible)

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
That is a GREAT plan. Though I don't think I'd write my own fanfics - I'd get too tempted to then pilfer the material for the canon itself. Ability to get PAID for the writing would win out over the hilarity inherent in writing fanfic for my own work.

CONVENTIONS! Oh man. What I wouldn't give for the opportunity to be a feature of a convention. EVEN A MINOR FEATURE.

[identity profile] tammaiya.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
But think of the possibilities! You could do TOTALLY RIDICULOUS stuff in the fanfiction that you would never ACTUALLY do to canon.

Like, say, crossdressing hooker fic. Or boyband AUs. XD

HAHAH. She was referring to our shared anime fandom, for which I wrote the former and she is writing the latter. But I cannot wait to see what you do with those + Doctor Who. Which one spawned the bunny?

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
Crossdressing Hooker Fic

Because seriously, Jack has OBVIOUSLY done this at some point. Oh, he'll claim that it was some undercover thing for the Time Agency, that he had to do it in Lahore because he couldn't find any other way of making money without drawing the wrong kind of attention to himself, but we all know that he did it because he liked it.

[identity profile] apiphile.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
It'd be great, you'd never have to pay for your own drinks again.

[identity profile] jezrana.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
...Yeah. And when you add in the fact that the only one either of them can be honest about the lifestyle with is each other, how crazy protective/possessive Dean is of Sam, and the fact that at least Dean is perfectly willing to disregard all kinds of other social mores...Wincest is, while still not being to my tastes, one of the more plausible incest ships out there.

Which is one of the reasons I think a really good recurring female character on the show might be a good thing, to mix it up a little and have it not just be the boys, but would also probably feel kind of shoehorned in and obvious in that way. Sigh.
ashen_key: (Dean/Jo: Dean got Owned)

[personal profile] ashen_key 2007-07-07 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
but would also probably feel kind of shoehorned in and obvious in that way

Given how fandom reacted to Jo...it'd be hard. But with agreement with you in thinking that it'd be a good thing.

I think she would have had to have been there (and she would have had to have been a REALLY GOOD character indeed) from the start.

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
I must admit it's the crazypossessiveness that's selling it for me. They're so intense about each other.

I do really like the fact that the show gives us such a strong vibe between two guys rather than a male and female partners who - considering the type of work they do and the emotions it elicits - would be kind of DOOMED to a romantic relationship sooner or later. But...yeah. It's quite telling that you could substitute 'shagging' for 'brothers' anywhere in the equation and it would make just as much sense.

Oh fandom. You're so predictable sometimes.

I need more SPN icons stat.

[identity profile] minna.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
They tried that with Jo and Ellen, and we all know what happened there. ;_;

*giggles* I hate to do this to you, but my dad has TWO bottles of the 1986 Grange set aside. One we have to open on my birthday, and one I get to keep and either drink or sell.

(Man, are we the most pathetically upper-middle-class girls in the world or what?)

OH. Remind me when your 21st is? I'm starting to plan my own.

[identity profile] tammaiya.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
He has more than one bottle, actually, but I think we're drinking them all when I turn 21. XD

Ooh, more boyband!AU :D These writing nights of yours really seem to work. Invite me to the next one so I can bash away at my three or so current WIPs, none of which are cooperating.

[identity profile] tammaiya.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
They do! it defies logic because you'd think we'd just talk and maybe drink (okay, the latter we are doing), but I always get boyband!X done when I'm over.

Right now we are talking about having a writing day/night whatever while I'm in Japan. "QUICK! TO UENO PARK, I NEED TO CHECK GEOGRAPHY!"

[identity profile] dopplegl.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ass slapping! Also, Bugs features the shortest night in history, but we will ignore that because they gave us gay jokes.
ext_21673: ([sga] a total waste of makeup)

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHA I KNOW. And it could have so easily been avoided, too! They could have been holed up in the attic for hours and the developer guy could have used the time to bond with his son (thus neatly fixing the OTHER implausible aspect of the episode) and Sam and Dean could have had Awkward Moments and Not Talked About Their Dad. And then the termites, just before dawn. SO EASY. Instead of the shortest night in history which couldn't even be explained away by winter because it was JUST AFTER THE EQUINOX. *shakes head* Fooooools.

[identity profile] pathstotread.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Skin. Such a gross episode (SHEDDING SKIN EW EW EW), but also very awesome. And I didn't much care for Bugs, but it was set in Oklahoma, so.

I don't ship Wincest (mostly because I just don't enjoy incest at all, even when it's fictional), but I have to say I can kind of see where the fangirls are coming from. I'd like for there to be more female characters on the show, but as someone else mentioned above, Jo got such a shitty response from fandom that I wonder if it'll ever actually happen. (And this from a girl who actually really liked Jo.)

[identity profile] girl-wonder.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
HA! Yeah, that's essentially the only reason for wincest, really. Men, touching, fucked up childhood, only two consistent characters.

Bugs is an ep that I still go, "OMG. I can't believe I watched that."

Skin = le creepy.

Wait until Asylum.
ext_21673: ([larklight] omg kissing ew)

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2007-07-09 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
...DO NOT DO THAT. I am up to Asylum now. Now I am going to be even MORE jittery. (What did Fry mean? What? IS THIS THE SCARY BIT? DOES IT GET WORSE?)

[identity profile] girl-wonder.livejournal.com 2007-07-09 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
*evil laughter*

I am the EVIL SPOILER OVERLORD.

Back on 'Bugs', the only redeemable part was Dean and Sam pretending to be gay. The two minute night, the bug-spray flamethrower.

Not one of the eps that make me proud of my show.
