Me: OH GOD RESEARCH. ESSAYS. UNI. STRESS.
Me: I shall read something nice and soothing and undemanding in my breaks.
Me: Larklight! Yes! Completely safe! There is absolutely no risk that anything even more insidiously distracting could arise from this!

"Hallo, Mrs M.," he said cheerfully, giving one of his best bows. "I don't suppose Myrtle is about?"

"Hello, Jack." My mother smiled and swept forward into the space that, I noticed, Jack had carefully left between them, knowing my mother's tendency to hug orphans of any species on the slightest provocation. The fact that Jack is now taller than her didn't put her off in the slightest, but she was good enough to release him after only a few embarrassing seconds. "I believe you will find her in the conservatory, doing her very best to pretend that she hasn't changed dresses five times already this morning."

And indeed, at that very moment Myrtle's voice could be heard resuming its song, even more determinedly carefree than before; but, alas, no closer to reaching the vicinity of the tune.

"Amelia, m'dear, I don't suppose you've been at my desk again?" My father appeared in the door leading to his workshop, looking harrassed. "Only I seem to have mislaid some of my silver retractors."

"Hallo, Mr. Mumby, sir." Jack's back straightened up and his face adopted that rum mixture of nerves and respect that he's still not quite got the hang of, and makes him appear slightly aether-sick instead. I once tried to tease him by doing faces and showing him what he looks like as soon as my father walks into the room, but Jack just got sullen and muttered things about how you'll be in for it when you start courting, Arthur Mumby, just you wait.

"Oh, hello, Jack, lad." My father pushed his spectacles up his nose and eyed Jack through them as though he was an odd species of Aetheric Ichymorph that had somehow floated loose from its cage. "Didn't we just see you off last week?"

"Last month, sir." Jack rocked a little on his feet, another of his nervous habits. "Sir Burton sent the Sophronia to Io, and we have just returned."
