zuko & azula fanmix
I WAS BORED, OKAY.
Now with bonus chronological mini-fics for each track!

the gods that we blame - a royal firebrats fanmix (61.43 MB)
1) The Cranberries - Ode To My Family
Unhappiness was when I was young
And we didn't give a damn
Their first flames are barely enough to tickle, weak struggling things that only exist for a few seconds. They take turns shooting them at each other, giggling at their own efforts; and then one day there is a determined furrow creasing Azula's perfect brow, and her palm flicks out - "Ow!" Zuko yells, shocked - and her face lights up with the same fierce glow.
2) Liz Phair - Love/Hate Transmission
I was a mess in my open eyed youth
I grew up thinking
What's good for one, oppresses the other
It's my turn, my life, my way, mine, me
"This is Ty Lee," her mother says, her hands resting on the girl's shoulders. "Play nice, Azula." Azula eyes the huge grin on Ty Lee's face, searching for signs of falseness, and conjures a smile in return. "I always play nice," she says, and steps warningly on Mai's foot.
3) David Usher - Black Black Heart
All these blessings all these burns
I'm godless underneath your cover
The hollow wrenching feeling in his chest is so consuming that Zuko doesn't feel the pain in his face until Iroh's fingers probe the edges. "Be still, Prince Zuko," his uncle says, looking at him with eyes that are unfamiliar: hard, and frightened. "Let me draw out the heat." Zuko grits his teeth and, with the eye not swollen shut, watches a slim shadow draw away from a pillar and leave only the echo of laughter behind.
4) Tegan & Sara - Superstar
Dignified in what she does
When she sings the smile that she brings
To all of you unaware of what's to come
With her brother gone, Azula tells herself, she is free. She tells herself that she doesn't mind the way she is sometimes dwarfed by the silence of the palace, like a single candle in a vast cave. She tells herself that she would never miss a blood traitor. (Azula always lies.)
5) Andrew Bird - Fake Palindromes
she's got an old death kit
she's been meaning to use
blood in her eyes in her eyes for you
From the moment she was taught about its existence, Azula knew that she would one day master the bending of lightning - if there was one thing she was confident in her possession of, it was self-control. Tracking her brother across the world, she hones and refines her ability to tame the power, channel it around herself, and spin it into death.
6) Live - The Beauty Of Gray
This is not a black and white world
You can't afford to believe in your side
"Look into your heart," Iroh says, and, "it's time for you to choose good," and Zuko wants to yell at the old fool that it just isn't that simple - that Azula isn't offering him ideals and morality in the steam of a tea infusion. She isn't offering an absolute. She's offering him restoration.
7) The Butterfly Effect - Gone
I hope you're winning the war
To make everything like it was before
All that we were, we can still be again
"Isn't this wonderful." Azula has her head tipped back, her eyes closed, but she doesn't look relaxed; she never does. She looks like a snake. "Just like old times." Zuko nods and tries to picture old times without his mother and without Iroh. He doesn't like what that leaves.
8) Switchfoot - Dirty Second Hands
Are you really as tough as you think?
You blink and you're over the brink
"Well you look like shit," Azula tells him, and Zuko mutters something and slouches further down in his uncomfortable throne; doesn't tell her about three nights spent burning his own fingers with desperate sparks, afraid to fall asleep in case he wakes up with the Avatar's face.
9) Alanis Morissette - Princes Familiar
please be able to take the wheel from me
please be crazy and curious
papa love your princess so that she will find loving princes familiar
A congratulatory note from their father arrives, and Zuko reads and rereads those few terse lines addressed to him over and over again.
"It's pathetic," Azula says. "How hungry he is for validation."
"Please, Azula." Ty Lee tries an experimental flip from where she is sitting on the stone table. "You're just as bad, you know."
10) Three Days Grace - Just Like You
You thought you were standing beside me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be just like you
"Are you afraid of me, Zuko?" she asks, and Zuko spits "No," before he can stop and think about the most sensible answer. Azula laughs and calls him a liar, but she doesn't look displeased. Zuko exhales.
11) Destroyer - The Sublimation Hour
Don't spend your life conceiving
that the widows won't get sick of their grieving,
'til everyone walks out.
Hey, isn't that what rock 'n' roll is all about, Princess?
Azula finds something very telling in the way that Mai stares at the horizon and fiddles with her knife-hilt during Zuko's periodic fits of doubt. "I'll kill you if you betray me, you know," she says chattily, and reaches out to pat her best friend's hand. Mai's expression doesn't change. "I know," she says.
12) Chris Cornell - You Know My Name
If you take a life do you know what you'll give?
Odds are, you won't like what it is
When the storm arrives, would you be seen with me?
Azula is not laughing as the Avatar approaches, but there is a whip-tight smile on her face. It makes Zuko feel sick, but also reassured: focused so confidently and completely on her quarry, she is less likely to be watching her back. "Ready?" he murmurs, looking straight ahead, and feels Mai's hand slip into his for the briefest moment.
13) Dar Williams - The Blue Light Of The Flame
How did we lose this great right
Everything burns in our past
The balance we broke
Left us running through smoke
Zuko forces himself to look away from his sister's drowned body; instead he watches the tiny earthbender trying to bandage her own wounds by touch, watches Katara's guilt and exhaustion coming out in tears which the Avatar bends gently off her cheeks.

It's also relieved some of the pressure I was feeling to make my Zuko fanvid, which is going to be to Dirty Second Hands. The lyrics are SO SO PERFECT.
You might be right.
The fight might be right inside you.
The blind leading the light to you so not
leaving you blind you with dirty second hands.
Here's the face of everything that breaks you down
THE BLIND. LEADING THE LIGHT TO YOU. NASJHASANMSD. I ransacked this one for icon keywords, too.

Ji & I have decided that all fanmixes should have a fic woven through them. This would vastly improve the

It is the perfect soundtrack to the fic! If the fic was, you know, possessed of any length whatsoever.

I am so glad you enjoyed it! I have only a handful of Avatar fen on my flist, so I wasn't really expecting this to have much of an audience. I had huge amounts of fun with it, though.
