I know where my towel is

Me: *goes off into excited talk about next year*
Ji: You have too many contingency plans.
Me: I know.
Ji: Make a flowchart.

Legend

* Pink abbreviations are the degrees I will accumulate along the way. PhB will actually be PhB(Hons) - Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) in Science - it's an elitist undergraduate science program that the ANU runs. BSc is a plain old Bachelor of Science. MBBS is Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery, which is what Aussies do in place of an MD.

* Red arrows indicate my preferred course of action at this time!

* Notice how PhD is no longer even an option. I just. That much research? No. Not for me.

* Youth Allowance = the government paying me around $300/fortnight while I am studying full-time. To qualify I have to earn around $18,000 in the previous 18 months, and since the DHA graduate program salary is around $48,000...

* Plz note that the box on the far right hand side is the hazy ideal long-term goal.

Any questions? JI?

I got offered a placement at the Dept of Health and Aging in their year long graduate programe. Sometimes I wish I hadn't turned it down, but most of the time I'm glad I did.

So if you got the MIPH, you wouldn't get the MBBS?

I certainly have an advantage, being already located in Canberra. Packing up and moving across the entire continent is...a big decision.

Yeah. And at this stage the MIPH (as awesome as it sounds) is my last choice, because I really don't want to do Honours, and I'm also not sure of what my career options would be afterwards.

Though there IS always the option of getting the MIPH at some indeterminate time in the future, once I've qualified as a physician and made enough money to take a year off. Maybe there should be a dotted line from 'clinical practice' through the MIPH box.

But since I've been having OMG WHERE AM I GOING dilemmas, perhaps I should construct a flow chart? HMMM.

DO IT! It's fun! I got to play with coloured pens, something that I haven't been able to do for a very long time. And it lets you set out all the possible options and then work out which ones could follow which.

I was going to ask, WHERE DO I START? but then I figured it out.

You know I approve of any and all endeavors which make you more House-ian.

You scare me. A lot.

*awe*

[identity profile] dopplegl.livejournal.com 2007-04-16 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. My flow chart would be very small and very blank.

Add the dotted line! If it works like it does here in the States, there are a lot of M.D.'s who go on to get their MPH or MSPH (the latter being the research-focused degree).

Now I want to do a flowchart.

[identity profile] unravels.livejournal.com 2007-04-16 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that there is a "like House!" stuck in there. XD

[identity profile] tammaiya.livejournal.com 2007-04-17 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
*giggles* Like House! But I think that the flowchart was a good way of gaining perspective. I'd do something like that, only... uh, your problem seems to be you have too many options. Mine is more that once I finish uni, I have no idea what next. I don't even know what state or even country I intend to live in.

(Against Japan's favour, the chocolate there is apparently crap. Did you know Australia is the biggest chocolate consuming nation per capita in the world? That's what my mum said, too. She also said our tariffs mean it's one of the cheapest places to get Belgian chocolate outside of Belgium.

How did I make a discussion about the future turn into a discussion of chocolate? A very good question.)

Well, you know what you want to do! I have way too many enticing options.

A future without chocolate is a desolate one. Duh.

In Japan's favour, it's not like you'd be very far away from Australia :D We would be able to post you chocolate no trouble. Also, it would be GOOD FOR YOUR BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS, missy.

Of course, if at any stage I am approached by the government and asked if I want to go on a top-secret mission in space, I will scrap this plan in a HEARTBEAT.
