1. Because his father wanted him to.
2. Because his father wanted him to.
3. Because there had been a moment - just a brief one - when he was quite young and playing a Viper simulation arcade game, based on the first Cylon war, and the world outside of the screen and his hand where it was curled around the joystick just faded away, and everything seemed natural. He didn't get a high score, because Zak bounded cheerfully in front of him a moment later and ruined his concentration. But he still remembers how that moment felt.
4. Because he had a sneaking suspicion that the coolness points lost through being the quiet, responsible, bookish type can be somewhat made up for if one is also a Viper pilot.

1. Kara Thrace
I don't have to explain, do I? I'm going to anyway. She's Top Gun and she smokes cigars and pwns everyone at card games and she's all emotionally fucked up and in love with her captain/pseudobrother/best friend and yeah, Kara Thrace just personifies this particular archetype.
2. Integra Hellsing
She RUNS A VAMPIRE HUNTING INSTITUTION. And she's also kind of majorly fucked up, in her way, and has the whole asexual/married to the job/Virgin Queen thing going on except for the edgy weird vibe she has with the rogue vampire who is her family's semi-consensual agent and okay, maybe I've talked myself into rewatching select episodes of Hellsing.
3. Faith Lehane
Aside from being the hottest hot to ever hot, Faith is what every badass chick should be. She's strong and sarcastic and fierce and has just enough insecurityand hopeless lesbian crushes bubbling below the suface to be very human and very susceptible to The Dark Side. Plus she gets the ally-of-good -> evil -> redemption character arc, which I adore.

Um. She has a sword that grows out of her arm. She wins. (Also, she's cold and snarky and awesome and has a shrine-maiden-heart-of-stone exterior that gets slowly eroded by Sorata's hopelessly cheerful exuberance. Oh, Sorashi. I miss yoooou.) She's also the only person I've ever (properly) cosplayed, so you get a bonus picture:

She's a psychic, mentally damaged genius assassin, which is somewhat difficult to top. Oh yes - I love that she dances, and I love her sense of humour, especially when she's around Simon.

If I still have to babble about why PILOTS own my soul forever, you really haven't been paying attention for the past year or so. I will gladly elucidate in comments for any curious parties, however :D
2. Tony Hill/Carol Jordan
I'm going to go with my favourite justification for these two: he's a brilliant but socially inept forensic psychologist, and she's a workaholic detective. And together, THEY FIGHT CRIME! Because they do! Wire in the Blood would be a great show even without their dynamic; as it is, it's phenomenal. (I want to be half as cool as Carol when I grow up.)
3. Brian Kinney/Justin Taylor
I could go on and on and on about these two, but I will content myself with saying that they manage to hit most of my relationship-kinks perfectly, and their show is so well-written that I have no urge to fic for them whatsoever, despite their OTPitude.
4. Cristina Yang/Preston Burke
DYSFUNCTIONAL DOCTORS! He is: hot, a good cook, a brilliant surgeon, a musician, and a nice person. She is: hot and snarky. Although not a nice person. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.
