I can easily close my suitcase without any sitting-on-the-top-and-crossing-my-fingers, and I haven't expanded the expandable part. Which means that there should definitely be room for a) the crap I expect I will buy in America, and b) the inexplicable doubling in volume that the contents of all luggage undergoes when you try and repack it for the return journey.
