autumnal

Today is one of those days that is commonly called crisp - blue skies that are high, hard and flawless, overbright sun filtered through cold air and a colder wind. I don't know if I agree with the adjective. It tries to encompass many things. The edge of the wind is crisp, perhaps, pie-crust crisp, and then you step into the sun and everything softens out and is warmer for a moment. Golden like the middle of the pastry. Autumn leads inevitably to food metaphors, and those crowded photographs of seasonal produce. Fair enough. Walking along one of the back roads on campus every single tree has leaves in a jumbled spectrum from lime green to bright orange, hit by the sun, and the fallen ones filling the gutters keep to a monochrome of caramels and burnt butterscotch.

It's a very soup season. I'm feeling kindly disposed towards it today because I managed to wear clothing that exactly suits the exterior temperature, with no wistful longing for extra layers and no need to shed a coat and carry it around over one arm. Deep red jumper with oversized collar and cuffs in shades of maroon glitter and the exact grey that the nonexistent clouds could have been.

Despite the immediate longings for thick stews and coffee, I am sitting here virtuously nursing my water bottle, thanks to the seemingly inaugral lecture on the nutritional transition and the obesity epidemic. My tiny, alarmist, very French lecturer standing there with her damning graphs and her earnest appeals to never let our children drink soft drink, never to get them addicted to fats and salts. I am quite won over (again) and determined to shun all fast food (again) and deploring my sedentary lifestyle (again). I should really be given this exact lecture every month or so, just to keep me on track.
