It is absolutely sodding ridiculous how awesome this song is when one has consumed a gin and tonic and a few glasses of tequila and grenadine.

~

ETA: Oh, look, something of substance.

A music post! Brought to you by the summer holidays and my newest shiny fandom.

Technically this is a Battlestar Galactica fanmix, but it's also just a whole lot of songs which I really like. So. There's probably something in here for people just interested in finding new music :D

You all know how weak my graphics-fu is, so you'll just have to ignore the lack of swanky CD-cover graphics to accompany the fanmix.

I would absolutely make any of these into vids if I had the time, footage, and an editing program that didn't CRASH MY COMPUTER.

And yes, they're in alphabetical order by artist, but you can just deal with that.

1) Lovers in a dangerous time - Barenaked Ladies

The title pretty much says it all. A general show-specific song with (duh) massive Lee/Kara overtones.

Don't the hours grow shorter as the days go by?
We never get to stop and open our eyes
One minute you're waiting for the sky to fall
Next you're dazzled by the beauty of it all

Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
You gotta kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight

2) Everybody loves you now - Billy Joel

This is totally a Gaius song, with particular emphasis on the ends of both 'Six Degrees of Separation' and 'Colonial Day'.

You can walk away from your mistakes
You can turn your back on what you do
Just a little smile is all it takes
Yeah, you can have your cake and eat it too

3) Keep myself awake - Black Lab

A Roslin song, with just the right mixture of strength and surrealism.

But I'm sleeping, I'm so deep in
So much more real to me, closer than reality
It's always cold, always day, always here
Always say: I'm alright, I'll be okay

4) Life is short - Butterfly Boucher

This is a Kara song. Also my favoured argument for why pilotsex should be happening NOW and not when Ron Moore decides to get his act together.

Oh I am young but I have aged
Waited long to seize the day
All things said and plenty done
Oh I am young but I have a past
Travelled far to find the start
Yes I am scared and I've been burnt
But life is short

5) Distant sun - Crowded House

I don't know why this song keeps coming up as appropriate (it's my Bernard/Tonks song) but I adore it beyond measure and it's so pressing-each-other's-emotional-buttons Lee/Kara that it's ridiculous.

Tell me all the things you would change
I don't pretend to know what you want
When you come around and spin my top
Time and again, time and again

No fire where I lit my spark
I am not afraid of the dark
Where your words devour my heart
And put me to shame, put me to shame

6) Somewhat off the way - Dogs Die In Hot Cars

This is my Fantastic Four (Adama&Roslin&Lee&Kara) song; about being put into positions of responsibility and having to put aside your own fears and problems, and trying to hold onto identity in a crisis.

Were the teachers any good at it
Were they good at their jobs?
It must be hard, can they handle it
When we become what they said we'd not

When we look at the clock we know
How much longer we have
It's not the hours and the minutes that go
It's everything that we said

7) I guess that's why they call it the blues - Elton John

Ahaha. I've already inflicted this on plastichat. This my favourite Elton John song in the world. But more importantly: this is Lee all over, and his frustratingly adorkable love for Kara.

Don't wish it away
Don't look at it like it's forever
Between you and me I could honestly say
That things can only get better

And while I'm away
Dust out the demons inside
And it won't be long before you and me run
To the place in our hearts where we hide

And I guess that's why they call it the blues
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers

Just stare into space
Picture my face in your hands
Live for each second without hesitation
And never forget I'm your man

8) Modern crusaders - Enigma

General show song. Humans vs. Cylons. Alla way, yo.

Don't look back
The time has come
All the pain turns into love
We're not submissive, we're not aggressive
But they think we can't defend
Stand up, join us, modern crusaders alive

9) Times like these - Foo Fighters

Another general song, applicable to...uh...hell, all of them, at one stage or another.

I am a new day rising
I'm a brand new sky to hang the stars upon tonight
I am a little divided
Do I stay or run away
And leave it all behind?

It's times like these you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again

10)Crawling in the dark - Hoobastank

MOST ROSLINESQUE SONG. EVER.

And I wish I could know if the directions that I take
And all the choices that I make won't end up all for nothing
Show me what it's for
Make me understand it
I've been crawling in the dark looking for the answer

Assure me it's okay to use my heart and not my eyes
To navigate the darkness
Will the ending be ever coming suddenly?
Will I ever get to see the ending to my story?

11) You're the voice - John Farnham

Roslin and Adama song! Parental authority figures unite!

We're not gonna sit in silence
We're not gonna live with fear
This time, you know that we all can stand together
With the power to be powerful
Believing, we can make it better
We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son

12)They stood up for love - Live

Another song that I end up applying to everything ever because I love it so much. But. WE CAN'T MAKE IT HOME.

We spend all of our lives goin' out of our minds
Looking back to our birth, forward to our demise
Even scientists say, everything is just light
Not created, destroyed but eternally bright
Masters in everytime, lord in everyplace
Those who stood up for love
Down in spite of the hate

We made it to the moon
But we can't make it home
Waitin' on a rescue that never comes
Made it to the moon
But we can't make it home
Maybe home is where the heart is given up to the one

13) Riot on Broadway - The Living End

This is my CYLON ATTAAAAAACK themesong.

Pirate stations in the harbour
Sending a message to the wireless
A warning to all tonight
There'll be no remorse tonight
The flag is burning as we speak

So when the lights go out
You'll hear them scream and shout

14) Die another day - Madonna

All right, this is my optimistic THE PEOPLE I LOVE WILL NOT DIE song.

I think I'll find another way
There's so much more to know
I guess I'll die another day
It's not my time to go

For every sin, I'll have to pay
A time to work, a time to play
I think I'll find another way
It's not my time to go

15) It's the end of the world as we know it - REM

I should not have to explain why this is perfect. But if you read the lyrics they're uncannily appropriate. Every line can be stuck onto a particular character or situation.

Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it'll do.
Save yourself, serve yourself.
World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed, dummy with the rapture and the revered and the right, right.
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.

Locking in, uniforming, book burning, bloodletting.
Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.
Light a candle, light a votive. Step down, step down.
Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no fear cavalier.
Renegade steer clear. A tournament, tournament, a tournament of lies.
Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

16) To the moon and back - Savage Garden

ASH, DON'T YOU SAY A WORD. I thought this was a perfect pilotlove song even before Carrie made a Lee/Kara wallpaper to it. If someone could put up with the insane poppiness of the song for long enough to make a fanvid I would die happy. It wouldn't be hard. All the lyrics are appropriate to SOMETHING.

All her friends they've been tried for treason
And crimes that were never defined
She's saying, "Love is like a barren place,
And reaching out for human faith
Is like a journey I just don't have a map for."
So baby's gonna take a dive and
Push the shift to overdrive
Send a signal that she's hanging
All her hopes on the stars
What a pleasant dream
She's sayin:

I would fly to the moon and back if you'll be...
If you'll be my baby

17) Return to Oz - Scissor Sisters

This one reminds me hugely of Helo, wandering around the deserted streets of Caprica. It's kind of disturbing and golden-brown.

He said: Is this the return to Oz?
The grass is dead, the gold is brown
and the sky has claws.
There's a wind-up man walking round and round.
What once was emerald city is now a crystal town.

18) Space - Something Corporate

SoCo and utterly Lee/Kara AT THE SAME TIME. Of course this makes me happy.

In this place
The lonely escapade in outer space
There's no antidote for irony
You say that you have, when you know that you don't
And you say that you can, when you know that you won't

Hey, give me space so I can breathe
Give me space so I can sleep
Give me space so you can drown in this with me

19) Solitude standing - Suzanne Vega

Forget Anna Nalick and Mirah - this is MY artist whose songs all seem to shriek BSG at me. This is another slightly surreal, slightly ache-y Roslin song.

And she turns to me with her hand extended
Her palm is split with a flower with a flame

And she says "I've come to set a twisted thing straight"
And she says "I've come to lighten this dark heart"
And she takes my wrist, I feel her imprint of fear
And I say "I've never thought of finding you here"

I turn to the crowd as they're watching
They're sitting all together in the dark in the warm
I wanted to be in there among them
I see how their eyes are gathered into one

20) Pray - Tina Cousins

Depending on which eye you close and which way you tilt your head when you peer at it, it's either a song for humanity or a song for the Cylons.

Pray for good and pray for love
Pray for peace and pray it's enough
Pray for salvation, pray that we're right
Pray for one day we open our eyes
And pray for them and pray for us
Pray one day we can live as one
Pray for the children whose time is to come
And pray they forgive us for the stupid things we've done

21) Even better than the real thing - U2

Um. All right, this is just me being flippant. Totally Helo/Boomer and Gaius/Six. CYLONLOVE ALL THE WAY, BABY.

Give me one more chance
And you'll be satisfied
Give me two more chances
You won't be denied
Well, my heart is where it's always been
My head is somewhere in between
Give me one more chance
Let me be your lover tonight

You're the real thing
Even better than the real thing

There are two ways I can make any song sound good to me. The first is to drink alcohol, the second is to put myself into music geek mode, which means I can usually find something good about anything.

Everything sounds good drunk! It's great!

The songs here, however, were all picked when I was sober. So I can guarantee that they sound good AT ALL TIMES.

*pokes "You're the Voice"* I swear I used to have a different version of this song.

*waits for it to download, and listens, to see whether it's a yes or no*

PS: I was totally right.

I would like to see the vid even better than the real thing but can't seem to it get it to work. Please check to see if everything is alright. Thanks.
