a public holiday
I wonder if this counts as defacing Anzac Day.
We needed a battlefield. That one was uppermost in my mind. What?
I hope not. I do think there is something adorably Australian about celebrating one of our armed forces' most depressing military events. I can't really pretend that the day has ever meant more to me than cookies, poppies, a day off school and the occasional cold morning spent singing and shivering at the Dawn Service, but it's embedded in my consciousness nonetheless.
And I've been able to say these words since I was six or so, and it wouldn't be today without them, so...
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them
And now I shall spend the last few hours of my break attempting to write an essay outline and study thermochemistry in the ad breaks of Desperate Housewives, which I did swear up and down I was never going to watch. But Phoebe kept turning it on, and then I got seduced by Gabrielle's hair and bloody Claire, who looks like Natalie Portman and Scarlet Johansson had a baby. Mmmm.

Anyway, better than Americans. "WHAT OH GOD WHAT IS VETERANS' DAY FOR. PLEASE SOMEONE KNOW. THE ELEVENTH HOUR OF THE ELEVENTH DAY OF THE ELEVENTH MONTH. WORK WITH ME?" But no one does. And I despair.
Coming up soon: International Socialist Day! And . . . V-E day! And . . . more, I'm sure.
Whoo?

Not a highly imaginative acronym. Yours is better.
