(AUGH. AUSTRALIA. PLEASE DON'T DROWN IN MY ABSENCE.)

I am seriously considering going to see the play of Birdsong -- featuring Ben Barnes! -- on a friend's recommendation, because I am halfway through the book and can definitely have finished reading it in time for the matinee on Saturday. It'd be a LOT cheaper than a musical. Although with fewer sparkling dance scenes and more heart-wrenching WWI imagery, one assumes.

SOMEONE IN LONDON has to go and see Catherine Tate and David Tennant play Beatrice and Benedict for the RSC's production of Much Ado this summer, though, and then TELL ME EVERYTHING *_* God, I wish it was on now. I would sell a kidney to see that show.

ETA: Ooh, I like this meme, it looks thinky.

Pick a character I write, and I will give you the top five ideas/concepts/other I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to depicting them accurately. This includes both original characters and characters about whom I write fanfic.

oooh!

Arthur Pendragon and/or Sakura

[identity profile] sour-idealist.livejournal.com 2011-01-11 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
For the meme: Would you be willing to do Arthur (the point man, not the prince) or Ariadne? (Fair warning: I'm asking partly because I need a way to really solidify my grasp of them; I'm having a little trouble. I swear not to flat-out copy you, though.)

I was going to say, EASY ONES, but coming up with five might turn out harder than I thought. Let's see. Sakura first.

1) The imprint of memory of the sheer hopeless inferiority she used to feell when compared to everyone else of her generation, but especially her team members.
2) A niggling survivor's guilt that her childhood was relatively unfuckedup and she has a functioning family unit. I MAINTAIN THIS TO BE TRUE. Even if we never see them.
3) A fuse that she can never lengthen as far as she'd like.
4) The ingrained instinct and ability to dogge; to evade.
5) Deep, deep reserves of strength and sheer bloodyminded willpower.

I absolutely can! I do warn you that they will be very much the Arthur and Ariadne that I discovered during the writing of Manor House, and so not everybody's idea of the characters, but I think there's a hell of a lot of variation in this fandom anyway.

Arthur Pendragon: (I think I've probably talked about some of these before)

1) An instinct to protect and defend that can be quite overpowering.
2) An honest appreciation for competence in other people.
3) A good head for practical planning and logistics.
4) An inability to deceive effectively that both stems from and feeds into a deep mistrust of secrets.
5) DADDY ISSUES. You know the ones.

UGH I hate not being able to edit comments. Please excuse the many typos. I hate this laptop keyboard. That was actually meant to be dodge.

Merlin and Draco.

And if you do see Birdsong, please tell us your thoughts on it?
I've never read the book.

Arthur:

1) A superb knowledge of his own skills and abilities; their extents, their limitations. He has very healthy and realistic self esteem. This is, however, closely linked to:
2) A silent but profound envy of people who have personal aptitudes that he himself lacks, especially when those aptitudes would be useful for Arthur's line of work, eg. Eames's much more extensive ability to read people and analyse human nature.
3) A belief in himself as being essentially isolatory and introverted that is belied by his habit of working, without exception, in team environments.
4) A long-held and highly adaptive ability to suppress his own emotional responses when he finds them inconvenient.
5) A robust sense of humour that's always been dry, but has -- somewhat to his surprise -- managed to avoid becoming dark, largely due to a streak of pure mischief that's been there since childhood.

I'm enjoying the book so far, it's very well written, although I have found it frustrating in that I am only just starting to feel like I am connected to/care about the characters. Which usually means the reader isn't shown much of their inner life, but that isn't the problem here... I haven't quite put my finger on it yet.

I'm seeing it in August! :)

Wow, that's fascinating; thank you. I'm especially interested in #3, really. I'm sorry I don't have more to say; most of these aren't things I've thought about, but they definitely make sense.

(Speaking of Manor House, I've been meaning to comment, but I feel like I have yet to really process and sort through all of the different layers of it, and therefore feel like I have nothing constructive to say. I am mightily impressed, though.)

I may be reaching slightly, but any chance of five things you like to keep in mind with either Yusuf or Lucy Saxon, then?

It has been a long time since I saw ANY Merlin and despite being in the process of writing an entire AU from his POV, I feel absurdly unable to dredge up anything for this meme. But I can do you my version of Draco:

1) A certain bully mentality (slash survival instinct!): confidence only when he feels supported. If a clearly stronger power is ranged against him, he has trouble doing anything but backing sullenly down.
2) At heart, he is not at all a violent person. Snappy, argumentative, vindictive, prejudiced -- yes. But he has no real sadism, no real enjoyment of inflicting pain and fear for their own sakes.
3) He adores his mother, and has confused but ultimately loyal feelings towards his father; he is honestly and fiercely proud of his family's heritage and achievements.
4) A deep resentment of any success or achievement or recognition that he views as undeserved.
5) A strong feeling of camaraderie with fellow Slytherins; he thinks they are on the whole interesting people, and enjoys the constant games and minor politics and insular socialisation that goes on while the rest of the school is looking disapproving or fearful.
5)
ext_21673: ([inc] so wild across the stone)

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2011-01-12 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
As if ANY OF THESE will be surprising to you! But trying to prioritise and pick the five MOST essential was an interesting exercise.

1) Control of self. Actions, body, powers, mind. He Fell to gain the closest thing to independence and free will that he possibly could, and the preservation of what was gained is his absolute priority.
2) Inescapably, the Moriel debacle informs his relationships with people: an automatic avoidance of anything that smells like emotional intimacy, the whole edge people thing, and - relatedly - something of an itchy trigger finger when it comes to people who are idealistic about love in general.
3) Ruthlessness & a great capacity for deliberate violence, and manipulation, and for taking people apart. (Psychologically speaking. Well. Physically too, I suppose, but where's the fun?) If it came down to a Y/N as to whether his personality is psychopathic, however, the answer would be N.
4) Aestheticism.
5) Curiosity. He's seen a lot but he can still find a lot of people very interesting, and he has never lost the capacity for asking questions that led him down the path to the Fall in the first place.

I suppose there could be a whoooole other section about his feelings re: the Murder Mysteries concept of his actions being necessary and preordained.

Slipping into Lucifer is like...old gloves. So easy despite all the time that's passed. I want to do this for other RP characters now! (and to see YOU do it)

Ariadne:

1) A strong need to prove herself, and a worry about her lack of life experience compared to the rest of the team.
2) That said: a knowledge of and confidence in her own skills that rivals Arthur's.
3) Little patience for bullshit or woolly thinking.
4) She has a civil but not intimate relationship with her parents. She is an only child.
5) A completely unmatched joy in creation and construction.

Basically I can talk FOREVER about any eyai characters of mine, so you get all three!

DOMINIC
1) As an eldest son and an extremely good-looking, intelligent person, Dom is used to getting the things that he wants. He can therefore act in ways that are unthinkingly selfish and entitled.
2) He loves his family. Especially now that he doesn't have to live with them.
3) He has no shame at all about his long-standing and epic love of fashion. He's not unaware of the commercial/social control aspect of the IDEA of fashion, but he still loves the occasional ridiculousness of it, and the beautiful things, and the knowledge that a tube boy can feel right at home in pipe society just by wearing the right things.
4) Originally he would have preferred to work in the fashion industry, bt went into engineering to keep his parents happy (and also, on one level, because he knew he would probably earn more). From network engineering and eyai systems work he developed a keen interest in psychophysics, and he does honestly love his current job.
5) He has no physical or verbal mannerisms that could be described as camp, but he is nevertheless as gay as many, many maypoles.

AGATHA
1) She's an idealist not by upbringing or education, but by nature. Although the idea of 'renouncing the Pipe' was in essence an excuse for the twins to leave their home, her belief in the idea was genuine to a certain degree.
2) Her way of coping with difficult situations is to shut down; become hard.
3) She very much enjoys the intellectual game of coding but isn't as single-minded in her love of it as Tee is. She would be well suited to a fair amount of other intellectual/creative jobs. Including, as it turns out, espionage :D
4) She carries herself like someone who could hold her own in a fight, but this is patently untrue. Outright hostility makes her anxious, and violence causes her to freeze up. There have been rare exceptions to this when she is protecting someone else.
5) She is not entirely asexual, but her interest in sex and romance is low. She loves her brother intensely but loves no other person.

JULIAN
1) He thinks his sister is basically the most awesome person in the world, and admires her, and thinks of her as being much stronger than he is. This is true, but not to the extent that he believes.
2) He is not a particularly pro-active person. He is reactive.
3) His response to hostility/conflict is pretty much the same as Aggie's; perhaps even more extreme. But where Aggie is purely avoidant, Julian uses humour and deference as defusing mechanisms.
4) However, he does have a sincere capacity for easy enjoyment and happiness.
5) He never feels entirely comfortable on his own, and tends to gravitate towards people who are protective and/or have an obviously strong personality.

(Worth noting as far as Julian is concerned is that the development of his relationship with Dom required him to overcome, to a certain amount, #2 and #5. Yay, personal growth!)

I MISS MY WHITE COLLAR ICONS. WITH THEIR R.E.M. KEYWORDS.

Peter Burke!

1) There's a funny layeredness to his self-image: he'd like to be a daring, amazing FBI agent, but thinks of himself as being pretty normal (but competent), but actually has the potential to go to extreme and badass lengths, if the motivation is right.
2) Part of him will always think Elizabeth settled for less by choosing him, but none of him doubts that she loves him.
3) He can't imagine a life that doesn't prominently feature Neal Caffrey. In one way or another.
4) He has a deep need to know that the things he cares about are, if not within his control, at least within his purview.
5) He has a quiet but profound confidence in himself as the person that he is.

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Lucy is maybe a bit obvious because I think I put almost everything about her into the fics. But let's see:

1) Her favourite thing is the thrill that runs under her skin when she feels excited. It has made many things more bearable, and many things completely wonderful.
2) It's not like she made the decision to stick with Harry once and then just never thought about it again. She thought about her decision a lot. She still thinks about it a lot. But it was still, she thinks, the right decision.
3) The rhythm thing, obviously.
4) Which is closely linked to a fascination that she has with language, and the way it feels, and the way people choose their words.
5) She wishes that she could have kept up with him. She wishes that she had two hearts and could rebuild her lives from their own ashes. But she knows that if she could, he wouldn't have married her.
ext_21673: (Default)

[identity profile] fahye.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
SOPHIE
1) She misses her sister every day.
2) Her morals are firm but only up to a certain point; when it comes to protecting the people she cares about, the rulebook is moot.
3) She wishes that she were less practical sometimes, but all the reproach and advice and rationality just comes pouring out of her mouth and is impossible to stop.
4) Gun to her head, she couldn't tell you if she wants to go back to Melbourne. Ever.
5) If she were ever to become a good cook, some part of her would be disappointed. The fact that people eat her terrible creations is an act of affection that surprises and pleases her every time.

TEE
1) Hilariously, the one thing I can NEVER get out of my head when writing Tee is the fact that he looks exactly like Richard Hammond. This is reinforced every time Hammond himself makes an unfortunate hairstyle choice.
2) For someone whose proudest achievement is earning enough money for vertical social mobility, he spends bugger all time up on the Pipe level. The important thing is that he could.
3) He talks a lot, but discloses his personal history - emotions - nightmares - to nobody.
4) He will always be an immature prodigy at heart.
5) He has an almost endless ability to think outside of boxes, even boxes that he's constructed himself.
