res colleges & rape culture

This article & this related one were in today's Sydney Morning Herald.

I wish I could say I was surprised. It's not as open/institutionalised as the Greek culture in the States, I think, but it's almost worse for being such an unspoken phenomenon.

(Nothing's ever happened to me; postgrads don't go to O Week events, or to most of the intercol booze-ups. But my college is the 'sister' college to Paul's, and many of the undergrad events are combined with them. Ugh.)

My college was very similar. I think the worst of it was that I had a friend who was a victim and didn't stay silent and then was harassed until she left. Everyone took it out on her since she "Single-handedly ruined the football season," (so said a girl who was sitting in the lunchhall) since the guys who raped her were asked to leave the college for a whole semester, but were not expelled, nor did they receive any jail time.

It made me really hate the greek culture (since my campus was actually around 45% greek). And they wonder why colleges shouldn't be wet campuses/allow alcohol.

Well that is completely freaking horrifying. Jeez.
