Yikes -- sorry, been a crazy weekend. But I've bookmarked the latest chapter of the Heist AU and am looking forward to reading it with a glass of wine tonight.
Let's see ...
I like Neko Case's new album, Middle Cyclone; the first single, "This Tornado Loves You," is awesome as is "People Gotta a Lotta Nerve." An earlier album, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood is also wonderful. She sings with the New Pornographers too.
Patty Griffin's 1,000 Kisses ("Rain" or "Stolen Car" are wonderful songs), and "Heavenly Day" from Children Running Through is also nice.
As far as Emmylou Harris goes, the title track (and anything else) from Wrecking Ball and "One Big Love" from Red Dirt Girl are good choices.
On that note, Gillian Welch's cover of Radiohead's "Black Star" is amazing.
I like "Last Light," "So Much Trouble," and "Basement Parties" by Matt Pond PA.
Try Tracy Chapman's Crossroads, a terrific album with a great title track.
Lucinda Williams is somewhere between folk and country; she's from Louisiana and the child of a poet. If you aren't fond of the more country sound, I'd try "Steal Your Love." If you don't mind it, try "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road."
If you like, I can upload any or all of them for you. Just let me know.
