academic irony

I find it amusing - and a little annoying - that of the eleven possible courses that fall under the ANU College of Science's new Neuroscience major, I have done - or am planning to do - every. single. one. (With the possible exception of PSYC3011; that may be replaced by an advanced studies course if I am uncertain about getting into medicine and think I may need to stay enrolled in the PhB(Hons) rather than dropping back to a plain old BSc and then gadding off to do my MBBS instead of an Honours year.)

And yet? I can't graduate with that major.

If all goes to plan, I will instead be graduating at the end of the year with a Bachelor of Science with majors in Cell & Molecular Biology, and Psychology.

Imagine a Venn diagram of...okay, uh, I still think in maths sometimes. Let me construct it for you:

That area in the middle, where molecular bio and psych intersect, is where I have been living my life. Academically speaking. And as luck would have it, I've done so many of the neuroscience courses that I've not got quite enough credit points left on either side of the intersection to make up either a bio major or a psych major, and the BSc requires two for graduation. So I have to split the neuroscience courses neatly by faculty and use them towards two majors with much less exciting names. Boo hiss. And the only reason I don't qualify for the Immunology & Microbiology major - also an exciting name! - is because I don't want to do Molecular Immunology because it looks shitboring.

(Man, if I was only planning to do one more third-year psych course next semester, I'd graduate with THREE MAJORS. How cool. But I have my heart set on taking the shiny new second-year human anatomy course instead.)

Though if anybody ever ASKS me what I majored in, I'm saying 'neuroscience'. Because dude. Every single course.

Hahaha, that was my academic situation in a nutshell except with different courses. I almost had a major in science comminication or medical science and I'd done many of the neuroscience ones until third year (as previously mentioned the electrophysiology stuff scared me off - nasty looky equations and stuff). I didn't get any majors sure, but I fucking KILL at trivial pusuit!

I wish we had normal majors.

Or could double major.

Or minor.
