I am going to regret this, but:

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Sell it to me, friends list. Be as profuse and/or long-winded as you wish, but be warned: this will require AU$70 or so worth of selling, according to Amazon, and I do not part with sums like that lightly.

*dubious*

$70 worth of joy? That is a lot of joy.

[identity profile] hobviously.livejournal.com 2006-11-02 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I've given it $180+ of joy.

So, yes.

P.S. I know a poodle or two who might be persuaded to do some burning of some things, if that were to be a thing.

Well, y'see. Season two is almost over but won't all be out on DVD for hella days. So even if you were to purchase season one on DVD, you'd still be 17 episodes behind without downloading.

Or...a thing.

note to self buy blank discs

HEE.

I do that so often when addressing Rawles that sometimes I just call her PEE EL DEE straightaway! As always, you are in the cool club with us. :>

Avatar is made 100% of joy and glee. It never sucks. Ever. Everything makes sense and is narratively coherent and well-characterized. The characters themselves are endearing without being ingratiatingly so, and they make mistakes and screw up and have flaws and their screw ups have consequences. It's omg epic! and moving at the same time. There is mythic destiny, and hilarious dialogue and it never takes anything too seriously. And there is a ten tonne flying bison. What's not to love?

I can come up with more reasons if you give me a minute

(I could probably also burn things to disc and send them to you, if you want)

[identity profile] agoodshinkickin.livejournal.com 2006-11-02 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
It had me at:

You want to go penguin sledding with me?

Avatar is both child-like and adult at the same time. It deals with drama and silliness in a way that I haven't seen in a lot of cartoon shows.

I think you can test drive some episodes on the official website if you're not sure, but I'm telling you that you won't regret picking it up.

[identity profile] liminalliz.livejournal.com 2006-11-02 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, we don't have to sell you on watching a cartoon - which is the major hurtle that non-cartoon-watchers have to pass before getting to the good stuff, so YAY. *shoves that argument to the side as it is NOT NEEDED*

SO. AVATAR.

IT HAS:
- a highly coherent and very complex plot of GREAT HEROICS that is just something that all of us genre-loving fools fall madly in love with and enjoy. YOU WILL NOT BE LET DOWN BY THE STORYTELLING. IT IS BRILLIZANT.

- the characters are extremely likeable and there are many of them and they are well fleshed out and interesting and you want to see more of them and always

- the main character, who is the future SAVIOR OF THE WORLD, doesn't have an issue with his Messiah-ness. He just wants to know if he gets the girl of his dreams. He's also 12 and adorable and you just want to follow him despite his youth.

- the style of fighting is ever-so-watchable and if you obsess over fighting styles - which I do not - this is a show to watch and be obsessive over

- the writing is genius

- the villains are worthy and enjoyable in their own ways

- the humor is PERFECT. my biggest issue with Japanimation is that the humor doesn't work for me; this show makes me laugh so very very hard

- this show has also made me cry. often. over dead babies and stuff that happens to MY BELOVED APPA (which is the lead character's familiar - a part manatee/part bison).

- Avatar is slowly claiming the hearts of all the px. As a Logan, you have to at least try it.

It's worth the cash. I promise you.

Pdls are too good.

If it's any measure of recompense, I expect I will be writing fic for it within minutes of viewing. I am easy like that.

That fandom hate meme still cracks me up. It was my sole moment of wank-object-ness and I am never letting go of it.

[identity profile] memlu.livejournal.com 2006-11-02 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
But then I realized how much money I've spent on this series and its merchandise, SO NE'ERMIND.

Um! It's held a place in my heart since it premiered waywayway back in February of 2005, which is a long time for me. It's sweet and funny and surprisingly tragic and the characters make me soso happy. The animation is lovely, in still moments and in the fight scenes (which are RIDICULOUSLY FABULOUS), and I wish they would release a soundtrack, I wish this more than anything.

Also, slowly but surely, everyone on my f-list is watching it! Even those who swore they never would.

IT IS INEVITABLE.

(But that's still a lot of money.)

MEM IS THE VOICE OF SANITY

*clings*

It's DVD set + conversion to Australian dollars + postage to Australia, which is of course as far away as possible from both the US and the UK.

However, I have friends who believe in the necessity of sometimes engaging in acts of piracy, so we may be avoiding that obstacle.

I love omg epic! animated stuff. X/1999 was - probably still is - my favourite anime for years because it's very epic. And awesome.

Buuuurning. IMRY IS ALSO TOO GOOD. Erm. Possible coordination with pdls is required.

Like - I love this series! It is probably my favorite cartoon ever! I want it to NEVER END EVER.

But that is still a lot of money.

So, yes. There are times when piracy is the lesser of two evils!

My piracy is not likely to stop me from eventually spending money on DVDs, is the thing. If I like it enough, I will buy it when I have the means! It's just...shelling out for something I haven't SEEN is not something I like to do.
