music post!
As promised - some songs that I've been listening to over and over again recently, and that I want to share with you all in a burst of love and musicality. Yousendit links should last for a week from today.
I'd be interested to know what you think of them, myself having dubiously eclectic musical tastes by all accounts. So feel free to drop a comment with oooohpretty or WTFyoufreak. My smiley icon compels you.
Somewhat Off The Way – Dogs Die In Hot Cars
This has a simple but very pretty guitar theme – it’s a bit less eccentric and indie than their other songs, but I like it lots more.
Manic Star - Rhys Fulber
cyrulean put me onto this, I think. Vague and trippy techno-ish pop with a lovely melody and lyrics that make very little sense. Fun to write to.
Semi-Charmed Life - Third Eye Blind
This song can always, always put a smile on my face. It's poppy rock, cheerful as anything.
What Is This Feeling? - Wicked
Yes, it's time I inflicted my new favourite musical upon you all. This song is funny, intricate, slashy and with some catchy harmonies. You shall grow to love Wicked. That is an order.
What It Is - Mark Knopfler
I appear to the only person on the Internet under the age of forty to have an appreciation for Mark Knopfler. He writes amazing, amazing songs with the best guitar parts I've ever heard. Download. Educate yourself. I got more!
The Plagues - Prince of Egypt
copinggoggles posted this originally, and I leapt upon it like a mad frog. Prince of Egypt has songs written by the same man who wrote the songs in Wicked - Steven Schwartz - and this is one of the best.
Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Guns N Roses
Everybody and their dog likes to cover this song, but an immense loyalty to GNR makes this a standout version in my mind. It's a hard song to destroy (Avril Lavigne made a good shot at it, though) but this rendition brings out the best in it. It's the guitar again. Sense a pattern?
Paris 1919 - John Cale & Bryan Eno
This was buried in a music post of
dredpiratejenny's. I have no idea where she found it. I have no idea what it's actually about. But I can't stop listening to it.
Dies Irae - Libera
Wouldn't be a music post from me without a Libera song. This has a thrumming sort of beat behind it, drums and bells, and soaring choirboy voices. Yay choirboys <3
Vivo Per Lei (I Live For Her) - Andrea Bocelli & Giorgia
When my mother bought the album that this song is on she was faintly disturbed by how soon I could sing both parts of this, in word-perfect Italian. I could probably still do it, with a couple of trial runs. Not really classical, more a very ballady pop song about...music. Metamusic!
What A Good Boy - Barenaked Ladies
I am sick of having people say "Bare Naked WHAT?" when I rave about this band, so here. This is the live version of this song, and it's exponentially better than the recorded version in my opinion. Again, guitar.
Run To The Water - Live
I am very disappointed that it took me seventeen years to discover Live. They've been one of my favourite bands since I did, though; just the kind of intelligent rock that I love. This is a wonderful song, and its music video was the first Live vid I saw.
Comfort And Joy - Bat Boy
Er. Okay. So
schiarire inflicted this on me, blaming
vikytickytembo - it's from a random musical which I had never heard of, but the song is so catchy it's insane. There are cows. I'll shut up now. Download it.
Are You Out There - Dar Williams
This. This is The Song Wot Ate Fahye's Head. I can't really pinpoint what I love so much about it; the tune is repetitive, the lyrics are strange and elusive, her voice is good but not incredible. But it makes me so, so happy.
Somebody Told Me - The Killers
I have only just discovered The Killers, but they're a great band. This song went off in my head like a firework of cool the first time I heard it. Okay, bad metaphor. But it's great to headbang to, and yet not violent enough that you knock over your coffee.
Hate Every Beautiful Day - Sugarcult
My new angry!angst song. Again, not too heavy, and with enough of a wistful melody that I can listen to it even when I'm cheerful and enjoy it. Sugarcult's vocalist has a dead sexy voice.
