I'm not dead! Just AWOL-ish. I've been camped out at [livejournal.com profile] ryokophoenix's house for the past few days with six other people and seven sewing machines and a metric ton of fabric, glue, ribbon, papier mache, soft drink, very loud pop music and DVDs of animated movies. Operation Disney Cosplay For Supanova 08 is GO. Photos of the completed bottom half of my costume may be forthcoming.

Meanwhile, I WANT TORCHWOOD, and I also want everyone's reactions to Torchwood, but that'll all have to wait until tonight. Or maybe a few weeks from now when I regain proper Internet speed. But anyway, if you've made a Torchwood 2x01 reaction post, please comment here with a link to it. There is no way I can track them all down on my own.

I don't know what it is about Captain Jack Harkness, but he just lends himself to hilarious fanvids.

Seized by a sudden and strange desire to see if the Torchwood fandom has produced any fic worth reading since I abandoned it many months ago (short answer: not really, no), I started wading my way manfully though the [livejournal.com profile] torch_wood fic tag. Both Ji & I find Jack/Ianto to be an intensely boring pairing, thus disqualifying 90% of the fic, but we discovered that you can make almost any Jack/Ianto fic ten times more interesting if you work on the assumption that Ianto is the Master in human form.

(*polite nod in the direction of [livejournal.com profile] ariastar and her comment about stopwatches that could hold the essense of a Time Lord*)

Though if anyone does know where one can find the Torchwood fic of decent quality (I don't suppose there's an elitist cabal hiding anywhere and churning out drabbles? no?) then please share that information. I miss my incompetent bisexual snarkers.

PSA: tomorrow I am off to the coast for a few days with my mother and sister. I will be taking S1 of both Life on Mars and Heroes, and am hoping to get a lot of writing done. To that end, I need fake-canon facts about one Lucy Saxon to use in my crazyepic backstory. Toss 'em at me!

Final Random Fact: one of the things I hate watching more than anything else is someone losing a large sum of money at a casino. I just...I can't stand it. It's worse than the most immature humiliation squick. I have such an awful gut-wrenching aversion to the idea of gambling with important sums of money.

Yeah, Empire Records, I'm looking at YOU. But I still love you. Lots.

Proving once again that she can't do something without raising the bar for all subsequent efforts, [livejournal.com profile] copinggoggles is having a SUPREMELY ORGANISED MULTIMEDIA LOVE MEME at her journal. When I have had my breakfast and cleaned the bathrooms I will return and spill love all over it, but you should all go and start filling it up in the meantime.

Last night I got [livejournal.com profile] unravels hooked on Slings & Arrows, an achievement which unfortunately backfired and resulted in me compulsively rewatching the entire first season. Oops. I LOVE YOU DARREN.

My moodtheme is making me nostalgic for Owen (and, I suppose, the rest of Torchwood), but I'll save that particular rewatching for after exams.
fahye: ([r+g] if that were north)
My friends list is a hilarious/awesome place sometimes. I should do this more often.

- [livejournal.com profile] mercuriazs has solved all of our fandom woes with the concept of wikicanon.

- [livejournal.com profile] stars_like_dust wrote a sequel to Stupid Thing Last Night in which she sort of remixes Benevolent Sibling and includes gratuitous Kat/Racetrack and it's hilarious and hot and full of pilots both old and new. YAY.

- [livejournal.com profile] marenfic wrote Kinesic, a deliciously bitter Dee-POV piece focusing on 'Unfinished Business'.

- [livejournal.com profile] blackboggart should be getting way more attention from HP fandom than she is, because I think her art is just gorgeous (she's on a Remus kick at the moment).

- [livejournal.com profile] emiloy did a Jack fanvid to Savin' Me, which, well, come on. It had to be done sooner or later, and although it could certainly have been done better, this chooses some interesting clips to include. (Okay, I especially like it because it uses 'Small Worlds' footage, and I loved that episode to tiny pieces.)

- I believe I first got this recipe from [livejournal.com profile] bantha_fodder, though I could be wrong...anyway, these are the best cookies in the world. (I use the word 'cookies' for soft, chewy things like the ones that Subway makes, and 'biscuits' for harder ones like gingernuts. That is just me. I embrace all Western food terms!) I am making a batch this afternoon )

Finally...thank you, everyone who commented on my last post, though I really was serious when I said I wanted to hear what you liked about you :) I won't be ungracious, however; I was in a low spot, and there's no remedy quite like feeling loved. Thanks.
fahye: ([tw] gwen - name of the game)
Watching 'Combat', and I am immensely distracted by how much Mark looks like Stuart Townsend, and thus like Lucifer. This is a fantastic episode, though.

fahye: ([ncis] variations on a theme)
Alarmingly, I seem to be spending my summer holidays either

a) at work
b) on the computer
c) watching television (sometimes on the exercise bike)

My third year of uni will start and I will discover that I have accidentally destroyed all of my brain cells.

My brother is addicted to NCIS and my mother is addicted to David Tennant. I love my family.

Currently I am staring obsessively at the download for the Torchwood season finale, because I can't watch the final three eps on this laptop which means I have to burn them to DVD and THEN watch them on the OTHER laptop and EVERYONE IS GOING NUTS OVER THE FINALE and I am stumbling through LJ with a hand over my eyes trying to avoid being spoilered more than I am already. ARGH.

I think I'll watch some more West Wing while I wait, because I am more in love with it than I would have thought possible for a show about American politics. I tried to pick a favourite character in an idle hypothetical moment the other day and was reduced to gleeful flailing about, uh, everyone. Gun to my head, I think it'd have to be a tie between CJ and Josh, because I just watched the episode where CJ has emergency dental surgery and Josh takes the press briefing and nskjahsbdss. SECRET PLAN TO FIGHT INFLATION. OH JOSH <3333

Oh also: in less than two weeks I get a visit from [livejournal.com profile] stars_like_dust! Fear us, internets.
fahye: ([tw] jack - and that'll just be tragic)
I needed to write this out for myself, so that I could make some of the concepts cohere, but if anyone wants a peek at how my brain works when I'm writing...this'll probably give you a fair picture :)

It isn’t, interestingly, really about the Doctor – inasmuch as anything connected to Jack Harkness can not be about the Doctor, which is not-really-at-all. )

Xmas &c.

I do not think that 'loot' or 'swag' or whatever is a very accurate term considering that all of my presents combined would fit into a small shoebox, but WHATEVER, I love them all, and that is what matters.

Net gain )

Oh, and today I am working 2:45-9:45 so I SLEPT IN (oh, love. love. joy. bliss. etc.) and then finally watched 'Out of Time'. I can't watch 'The Runaway Bride' or 'Combat' (OWEN EPISODE! EPISODE! ABOUT! OWEN! OMG!) for a week or so, but this episode was so fantastic that I think I'll just rewatch it for a while and be perfectly content.

Torchwood 1x10 - Out of Time )

Finally: I have a Yuletide rec list coming once I've read the few remaining fics I have bookmarked.
fahye: ([vm] susan the happy trotty elf)
For anyone who has ever wondered what it might be like to experience severe menstrual cramps, food poisoning and a nine-hour retail shift in the week before Christmas all at the same time...

This just in: it sucks!

I'm coming to the realisation that I like and dislike my job in the same way that I liked and disliked maths in Years 11&12. Sometimes it all feels perfect because I can do it very well, but beneath the satisfaction of being good at it there's a deep-seated hatred of what it is I'm actually doing.

Ugh. Enough of that. Let's have something more cheerful. Someone posted these magazine scans on [livejournal.com profile] torch_wood and I uploaded them myself because I think they are ADORABLE:

Eve Myles looks especially sweet )

Yuletiders? The site now has a bright yellow countdown timer on it, which is kind of terrifyingly pressuring. I am going to do my final edit now and then upload.
fahye: ([ad] sheep in a photo booth)
1. “No sex forever, Apollo,” she says without raising her eyes, and his hand wavers near his pile of coins, under the amused gazes of the entire table, before he sighs and folds on a hand of full colours.

Yuletide is drastically incomplete and yet all I want to do is write fifty-sentences fic of pilots in an established relationship because the fandom has a sad lack of that and CLAIRZA IS A HO (yeah, remember that one?) and she is encouraging me in an extremely unhelpful manner.

I watched all of Arrested Development S3 yesterday and today, which meant many gleeful hours sitting on the couch stuffing my hand into my mouth to keep from shrieking with laughter. WHAT. As I told Ji: S1 was funny and random, S2 was hilarious and batshit insane, but S3 was like what might result if Shati, Emmy and Sweeney took a lot of illegal drugs and then sat down and threw ideas around and only kept the MOST RIDICULOUS ONES.

I want to watch all of The Office S2 again. Randomly.

I am yet to watch the latest ep of Torchwood, even though it is sitting there on my hard drive. Mostly because everyone's reactions to it, even the purely non-spoilery stuff that I've been exposed to, have been less than enthusiastic.
fahye: ([tw] gwen - name of the game)
Notes as I go. )
fahye: ([tw] gwen - name of the game)
Oh my god.

That was fantastic (though not enough Owen and Tosh! boo hiss), but um. We're not...we're not in the nice shiny Whovian Kansas any more, are we?

*jittery as hell*

It DID have to be rose petals, didn't it?

What made that episode really, really creepy is the fact that Jasmine looks like my sister. Exactly like my sister. My sister has hair that length and that colour, she wears it in those two plaits. She's small for her age, and skinny. She has that mole on her cheek, in that exact spot. She looks like that.

Ooh. Also. Fanvid rec - vid by [livejournal.com profile] blue_crystal03 - a little heavy on the fades for my liking, but the choice of music & clips and the juxtaposition of footage from DW and TW is very well done. ENORMOUSLY SPOILERY for, um, anything involving Jack ever, but definitely worth watching.
fahye: ([dw] this could be a little more sonic)
I have done hardly any reading in the Doctor Who fandom but I HAVE been reading most of the Torchwood stuff, and I have put together a short rec list of those fics that I think are worthwhile.

Some Torchwood, some DW )

RP poll

LJ polls: the best friend of indecisive girls all over the world.

This summer I'm going to try and do a lot more RPing at a handful of games, and I'd kind of like a Milliways character who doesn't take quite as much brainspace as Lucifer, because I haven't fleshed out any headvoices for a while and I think I need to relearn how to put someone together. I'd also like someone with an active canon (for once!) and Torchwood is new enough that the characters are available, as well as having the element of the unreal that I need to get a hook in a character. But I am torn between two!

I realise there are maybe...three...of you who would cast a vote in this, normally, so the rest of you can have uberfast character outlines on which to base an objective opinion *coughs*. We don't know a whole lot about either of them yet - there have only been four episodes.

Toshiko Sato = computer genius, probably a lesbian (Ji seems to think this trumps all other considerations), a decent person, quick thinker, lacking in depth & backstory at the moment but I'm sure something cool will be provided by canon

Owen Harper = biologist/doctor, kind of an arse, defensive and self-centred, smart mouth, interestingly inconsistent behavioural code and moral judgement

[Poll #864362]
fahye: ([tw] O/G - I should not like this pairin)
holy. shit.
